Update 10/23!

So, I picked up the models for my Blood Angels commission. I was quite suprised to find that everything was partially painted in an Imperial Fists color scheme, with paint seemingly just thrown on there. Here are a couple of pics from the blog.

Cheers.

Stripping process is under way. From the looks of it, the Castrol degreaser is lifting the paint off of these minis with ease.

They're being painted to a standard just above "table top standard."

Looking promising but I have to ask...

Why are the termies being done Bone White? Is this to be some successor chapter?

some dis

After some discussion with my client, we were talking about Angels Encarmine, whos Sang Guard and Death Co. are white. The client and i thought, why not have other Elite choices be white or a similar color, since we both agree that white wasn't the best choice of color for BA (in our humble opinions)? So the Termies are influenced by the alternative colors of the Angels Encarmine.

It looks like the only Elites for the commission are the Vets and Termies. But the Vets are just going to be the standard BA red, just painted better than the table top standard. I would love to paint more stuff in bone. I think the red/bone combo looks great.

I painted up a BA tac squad for my commission this weekend. Spent two 3 hour days on these guys. I've yet to paint the eyes, but I was keeping the sessions short and sweet, just the way a "table top standard" mini should be. I'll paint the eyes today or tomorrow. Tell me what you think!

Looking good so far, but definitely need a touch more detail. Eyes you are already doing but how about the chest eagles and piping?

Also I gotta ask the obligatory red recipe question

wolfshadow- I'm not a stickler about the benjamins, but the client definately didn't want to spend any extra pennies on freehand work for the shoulder pads. I also wasn't supplied with any shoulder transfers! =X If I had the transfers, I'd definately apply them. I was considering doing basic scroll work on the shoulders just so they didn't look so plain, but I thought it might look tacky. What do you think?

Lennysmash- I agree. These minis could use some more tlc, but the client wants the tac squads to be painted very economically, if you know what I mean. I'm hoping they will change their mind after reviewing the pics. Also, what do you think about scroll work on the shoulders? Tacky?

and the red is simply Bloody Red (Vallejo), with a very light highlight of Blazing Orange and then brushed with Army Painter Quick Shade Strong Tone.

I prefer painting a BA w/ Red Gore or Gory Red for Vallejo, then a black wash, then Bloody Red, and a finishing highlight of Blazing Orange. It takes longer, and you end up with a great result. BUT When times an issue, Quick Shade is our friend.

I think a simple highlight of the rims of the pad would pop, Maybe a bone rim? To tie it in with the Termies? and the clinet can always put transfers on himself.

The work looks great. That really sucks that your commission work had to begin with stripping models...what a pain!

4250 points of Blood Angels goodness, sweet and silky W12-L6-D4
1000 points of Teil-Shan (my own scheme) Eldar Craftworld in progress

wolfshadow- I think I will try some extra highlights on some of the most extreme zeniths. Bone could be cool. I'll suggest that to the client

Element206- Thanks a lot! Stripping has really been a seperate project altogether. Such a serious pain. The plus to that is the 'Before and After' take on the whole thing. It's pretty cool to see what you've done to some models that were pretty much garbage at one point.

The scroll work is a little cartoon-esque imho however as you said yourself the client is not paying for anything more than table top so it looks fine.

Good choice of contrast for the bases as well btw, my personal favourite for red marines is an ash waste colour, but these come in a close second.

On the stripping front I agree, its amazing to see the difference in models after some tlc. I actually consider my self a restorer atm as to get some extra cash i buy the job lots from ebay, strip em and then re-sell them. its a small profit game but the real joy is giving some of these great kits a second chance, lol.

Lennysmash- I agree. I did a little bit of scroll work, just to take aways from how plain it looked. I think overdoing the scrolling on armour and can look like poopy. But I have seen some interesting models with tons of scroll. It's all situational. I'll probably add highlights to the models and perhaps color the lenses of the scopes, as well as paint the chest pieces just to add interest. I'm sure I can pursued the client.

On stripping- I fully agree that saving a kit from utter uselessness and turning it into a nice unit for the table is a great feeling.
