I searched on black library, in the search function here and I tried my google-fu, and nothing. How come there's no books from an ork perspective? I love all the fluff they have written in the codex, fantasy book, and even the last couple of editions. I'm not to hot on reading about the imperium outside of maybe space wolves, so why no ork love?

Or are there books and I am just not finding them?

From the ork perspective? Who wants to read 200+ pages of "WAAAAGH! DAKKADAKKADAKKA!"?

Would be better than a book from the tyranids perspective. OM NOM NOM NOM...

I suspect it's a matter of no one wanting to write a novel's worth of dialogue in that accent. I know I'd go insane if I tried.

Plus, orks are fairly one-dimensional characters.

Never said it had to be a Pulitzer Prize winner, it could even be short, just something to a different flavor than SPEHZ MAHREENZ

Oh well, what are some of the better black library books in general? Even a book about space marines should be decent.

I'm trying to imagine a first-person story told only with accent, and then my brain restarts and I try again.

Dan Abnett's stuff, as a rule, is generally pretty decent, though I've heard mixed reviews of Titanicus. Graham McNeill doesn't seem to be all that bad either.

I've just gotten around to starting to thumb through the Horus Heresy novels, and while I'm only two books in - the first two are, conveniently, written by Abnett and McNeill respectively - I'm enjoying them. The Eisenhorn Omnibus is still my pick if someone were to ask me to choose one and only one Black Library book to ever read, though.

While MOST Orks are one-dimensional, that doesn't mean the protagonists of the story have to be.

You know its kind of funny. If you were to look at any of the races in 40k, you could easily say they are 1 dimensoniial. In fact for the purposes of the game, they dont need to be anything more than 1 dimensioal! Its only through the books that you more facets of characters and races. So saying that Orks dont deserve a book because they are one-sided doesnt make any sense. Its exactly a book that would let you see how multidimensional they really are.

You dont think Orks have hopes? desires? What do you know about the Ork mind? About the Ork way of life!

No, you're right, orks are complex individuals with a plethora of motivations and philosophies.

I don't know what I was thinking.

Black library recently released a book called "Fear the Alien". One of the stories is from the perspective of the orks, it was much more interesting than I thought it would be.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

I don't doubt that you can write an interesting ork book, my point was more that, as characters, they're unlikely to ever surprise you, because there's really nowhere for them to go in terms of development.

I would love to read about an Ork Warboss, or Mek Boy or something like that. Or an Ork embarking on a pilgramage to find Gork and Mork. Its so easy to write Orks off as something that would never surprize you, but honestly on paper Space Marines come across as far more bland. Its a shame people are so willing to write Orks off, or type cast them. But since they are a sentient species, they will have compelling aspects of life

The thought that Orks will never surprise you means that you are underestimating Orks.

Do not mistake the simply nature of the greenskins for stupidity, for they are more cunning than they look.

Yet they are the only race to know how to make a sort of force field (KFF) that can cover their ENTIRE army?

I think there's a lot more to the simple ork than just smash n grab...

yeah but it still sucks compared to most armies. Like the necrons WHO CAN DISABLE WARP TRAVEL!

Wait what? IIRC, according to BFG fluff, Orks have the strongest force fields in 40k.

Even compared to Necrons.

I think the Ork Codex has the most interesting, amusing and surprising writing out of them all.

I'd love more Ork-based stories. Something following a Mek from inspiration to riding at the forefront of a Waaaaaaagh! on a mega gargant....

Some of the short stories in the 2nd edition codex Orks were amazing. Told from the point of view of Gretchen helping an eccentric painboy perform brain surgery "hand me da skrewdriver". Orks 'kulture' is charming and funny and imaginative. Who doesn't love hearing about their crazy contraptions, or wonder what shenanigans they get up to in their little villages, when they are not at war.

I think an Ork book would be fantastic. Couldn't possibly be any worse than those silly Ragnar books "Ragner could smell the enemie's heart beating" Man those things were silly.

The old 1st/ 2nd edition books (Ere We Go, Freebooter, etc.) had alot of stories from the Ork perspective. I'm pretty sure one of those books was entirely fluff with out rules. Very slap stick "dumb ork" stuff, but was definitely interesting to read and really fleshed out the greenskins to be more than Waaagh... not much more mind you.
