Me and a friend are looking into starting fantasy. Going to got with the island of blood setup first. I am going to use the skaven he the highelves. How difficult will it be to learn the game with these sides.

Working on Imperial guard Kill Team. And a Nightlords 40k army.

Skaven is pretty easy. Dirt cheap troops, powerful hammer units. HE are a little harder. Great Magic and excellent elite units but lacking in numbers and the ability to stay in combat too long

Yeah, it's great, but I'm waiting to see what the much cheaper GW plastic that's most likely coming in January looks like.

Skaven are acctually quite a hard army to learn with due to the phenomenal number of special rules for so many of their units.

@Milotic - please stop posting that picture, we get that you like it, but your post addresses nothing in the OPs question, all you've done is create a picture wall to scroll past to get to anything useful.

To the OP - the island of blood is a great starter for skaven, as any skaven army should/will be based around canrats and slaves. The Island of blood rats can be used as both. Rat ogres are another common hammer unit, and come in there as well.

Skaven do have some special rules which "break" how normal rules work; however, this shouldn't deter you both from being able to learn the game. If you both bought an island of blood and swapped sets, this would set you both up with dice, rulebooks, and enough models to field a pretty decent force. I'd get the real army books also, so you can customize the characters better (though keeping them basic at first is a better way to go) and go from there.
