Armour
1) Prime them white
2) Paint boltgun metal
3) Highlight chainmail
4) Wash with badab black
5) re-touch highlights with chainmail
6) do extreme highlights with mitheral silver
Gold
1) Paint calathan brown
2) Paint burnished gold
3) Highlight chainmail
4) Give a very heavy wash of gyraphoon speia
5) Drybrush shining gold
Parchment
1) Base astronomicon grey
2) Layer bleached bone
3) wash with sepia
Purity Seals
1) Base black
2) Layer red gore
3) Highlight with blood red
4) Extreme highlight with blazing orange
5) Add a dot of white where the light reflects the most
NFW
1) Handle black and gold
2) Blade a a mix of black and leviathan purple
3) Add lightning with Ultramarines blue/ice blue mix
4) Build up lines with ice blue
Eyes
1) Ultramarines blue/ice blue mix
2)Build up with with ice blue
3) Add a dot of white.
This is how I plan to re-paint mine when I finally get round to it (darn, I'm such a slow painter). Everything but the armour is tried and tested methods, the armour is a prototype I've used on a piece of primed sprue.

Rather than start a thread on the EXACT. SAME. TOPIC. I'd figure I'd just resurrect this one. As there is more than one way to skin a cat, surely there is more than one way to paint Grey Knights. I like wizard's directions, but what do you other folks do?

I recently decided that I could re-paint my grey knights better than I had in the past. I stripped them and started going over them again. I also primed in white this time and used the Vallejo boltgun color. One thing I wanted to try was dry brushing their armor, all of it. I do several thin dry brush layers until the white is gone. It does make for a quite a shiny appearance, which is what I was looking for. I used a heavy thinned blue ink to do some of the shading (before i did any high lights or bits like purity shields or weapons) and it had a very nice effect. I then washed it with some heavily thinned chaos black. Blade is Magic Blue from Vallejo (I'm going to attempt lightning on the next few models).
They came out better than my first attempt, but I'm still not that great, heh... I'm looking for the "slightly above table quality" with these.
Edit: I'd love some tips from more experienced people.

A nice crisp paint job, I would go for a counter point on the Weapon (and drill out the barrel and muzzles).
One thing to consider is the use of a fine liner (0.5mm Black Gundam Fineliner to help the joints and armour plates and stick out and give some shadow.
Your painting is good and clean. You are 90% the devil is in the detail, with a little extra effort you will have a mini that is way better than table top quality.

I'm not really sure, but the base size is the same and its a "comparable" size. I figured somewhere between 6 and 9 inches based on the relative height of the terminator in its kangaroo pouch.
I just really really like Doms... I have a couple of Zakus as well...

It is GW Adeptus Battlegrey. I like it for the Grey Knight as it has a slight Bluish tint to it (which you can't really tell from this pic).

Oy. Spray paint. Yes, I need to try that.
I'm not knowledgeable about painting really, but I thought using enamels and acrylics together was bad for some reason?
Either way, who else uses spray paint for the basecoat, and what do you use? The more options here the better!

I pulled my calipers out, going off the pic on GWs site, its 3x the height of the pilot. With terminator being 1 3/8" tall (1.375") that makes the DK 4 1/8" (4.125) tall.
I also saw in one of the other GK threads that someone said it was 4 1/2" tall...which falls in line with my measurements of the pic.
Over 6 would be a bit out Id say, as its been determined that a Knight "titan" would be 6 inches tall in 40k scale.

Yeah it's a little taller than an actual model, there was an assembled Dreadknight at my FLGS. It was just for testing one of my lists, I'd rather put something silly on the base in a friendly game than just use an empty base.
I guess I never saw a problem with that, and most of the people had a good laugh at it (which was the point).

Huh?!? Where did you get one of the new GKT before release jgemrich? Anyway, i like that very much. And airmang, yours is very nicely painted indeed - I'm personally not keen on making them look THAT battered but, then again, maybe if I could I would.
I'd really like to paint my GK a more dull grey but sadly, I already have some squads of PAGK and TAGK that are painted in the traditional way so I guess I'll just stick to that.
The way I paint them now is by undercoating black and then, using a drybrush, overbrush them Boltgun Metal, then drybrush them Mythril Silver. I do all the details after that - the gold bits I have been doing tin bitz then drybrushing over with shining gold and washing with gryphone sepia. The parchments are based Kommando Kakhi and then highlighted with bleached bone. I always like to add a dark wash to them once they are done to avoid them looking too clean. The overbrushing/drybrushing means I can get them painted very quickly and because I have undercoated them black, I don't need to worry too much about creating shadows either.

It all depends on style and taste.
you can boltgun the minis or mix in blue ink into it etc.
I prefer my GKs to actually be "grey".
That means...
Armour:
Prime black
apply dark grey (mix of black and white, nothing else)
highlite by adding white (its that simple, no need for fancy colours)
Gold:
Base with scorched brown
Hilite with golden yellow and white
Gold2: (yes I use three different golds for the sake of variation)
base with scorched brown
highlite with beubonic brown and white
Gold3: (my favorite)
base with sneakebite leather with a small amount of black mixed to it
highlite with golden yellow and white (mostly white)
Red:
Base with mixture of gore red and DA green
Highlite with blood red and orange and white
Those are the main colurs.
Some examples of what these colours will look like:
I´ll make a tutorial when I get my hands on the new minis.

@airmang: What do I think? Its Beautiful man.
@Pyriel: You're going to make a tutorial! Awesome.
As far as how did I paint them in the past?
Note this was before GW washes
1) The armour and sword blade was done using a drybrush technique and started with a base coat of cold grey followed by a very light wash with black (3 parts water: 1 part ink) though now you could use Babad Black Wash. I then built the base up with progressively with wolf grey followed by ghost grey which where dry brushed on with a very small brush. I then painted a light blue ink glaze over the armour before lining the most extreme edges in white.
2) The gold gilding was done by first painting a base coat of Brassy Brass followed by glorious gold. I then washed the area with a 1:1 ratio of brown ink and water (Devlan Mud). I then drybrushed glorious gold followed by a Chestnut glaze (Gryphan Sepia ). If, I did this over, I would change it up and instead go with a base coat of 1:1 of Glorious Gold and Charred Brown. Then build it up with Glorious Gold followed by a wash of devlan mud. Then Polished Gold followed up with a light highlight of a 1:1 mix of polished gold and silver. Lastly the combo will be washed with gryphonne sepia.
3) The Red Heraldry and seals were based coated in Gory red and the edges lined with bloody red which was then finished of with a red ink glaze.
4) The parchment was done with a base of beasty brown that was built up with progressively lighter highlights mixing beasty brown and bleached bone, with a final highlight being bleached bone. Writing was painted on using black but in going forward, I would probably use charred brown.
5) The gun casing was based black and then highlighted with sombre grey. The most prominent edges were then lined with wolf grey.
Also, if I had to do this over again, I would skip the drybrushing and instead just use a thin layered technique (my painting skills have gotten better over the years )
