Just saw this in the "Have you got?" section. It looks like an overpriced carpet square to me. Has anyone used/seen this?

I use it at my FLGS. It's actually very nice. The flocking is solid, and generally keeps figures from sliding around. The backing on it is also really sturdy and keeps the mat in place. It also looks really good on the table. I won't say it's incredible, but it's a nice mat to play on.

So it is actually flocked? Like the stuff on bases? Or is it just a piece of carpet?

Yes, it's flocked. I've actually heard very good things about Citadel's mat. The backing is a synthetic fabric, from what I gather, instead of thick paper like many others. This means that creases can be flattened without too much trouble and it won't hold a strong curl if rolled up for storage. The guys on Beasts of War permanently mounted one to a gaming table they built and the backing made things significantly easier. I would have bought one if I hadn't already gotten a Woodland Scenics mat.

Cool. I think I might look into this.

The OLD mat was simple static grass on a paper sheet (like several model railway scenery manufacturers make) that is intended to be PERMANENTLY glued to a surface. If it was constantly rolled and unrolled, it fell apart.

The new (current) one is fabric and is actually a good playing surface.

Just for the record: There are also grass mats for model railroads. They are cheaper, basically flocked paper and NOT suitable for tabletop games as they lose their flock too fast when regiments are moved over it. This one is more sturdy and doesn't lose the flock (at least for quite a while).

BTW a similar solution that I use are felt mats by Hotzmats: http://www.hotzmats.com/felt_purchase_mat.html
I use European Fields without grid http://www.hotzmats.com/mat_1-euro_field.html for Fantasy Games and
Western Town without grid and streets http://www.hotzmats.com/mat_1-wild_west.html for 40k games . There are also cheaper one-colour mats. They are sturdy but after heavy use tend to flock slightly. I can still recommend them.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

I have one of these mats, and it is a great product. It’s a simple way of getting a grass green table that is completely flat, is cheap, and can be used in any number of ways.

The alternative is to shell out your first born child for the Realm of Battle Board, which will achieve the same result, but require you to paint it and flock it yourself, and leave you with no money to actually spend on terrain (and hills that cannot be moved).

So get the ‘Battle Mat’. It’s a wonderfully flexible addition to any terrain collection.

I'm also a fan of the mat. After buying lots of terrain, my table still "didn't look right".

It sure did after I whacked a mat onto the table!

I have one of the really nice ones they came out with first before the static-grass mat debacle. Its felt, then has some kind of green-rubbery spray on one side that has yet to shed in 10 years of use and abuse.

We use Geo-Hex mats. They are cloth, flocked on one side. They are great to play on, but do not spill beer on them.

Since we're on the gaming mat subject, maybe one of you could help a brother out! I used to play at an FLGS in Charlotte, that had a table that had a ruined city mat on it. It was slightly textured with craters & streets, as I recall, a dark gray in color and had a rubbery quality to it (which I always thought would be great for late night gaming sessions at the house, since the dice made almost NO sound on it!). Anyone ever scene anything of this sort before? If you could point me in the right direction on this, I'd be MOST thankful!

I have one of the GW mats, and can certainly recommend it. Had mine for a while now, and no issues with it at all.

Cheap, never get damaged (I drove my car other mine with no ill effects) and look really nice. Worth emailing them as they do any size you want and they have a snow mat and a grey one.

I got one of these in a super-cheap craigslist trade and love it. From the pics on GW it looks like a regular plastic mat with flock on it. It's actually closer to being cloth with a texture feel. It doesn't crease and is more akin to a very thin blanket or throw. Great for people who don't have a gaming table (I don't). You can put it out over your kitchen table and viola! Immediate gaming space that looks good. Put some terrain on top and you're ready to rock.
