The GW FAQ states, "Q. If a Tyranid unit takes a Mycetic Spore, can it choose to deploy normally whilst the empty Mycetic Spore deep strikes on its own?" A. No
However, can a player state that the Tyranid unit he/she is holding the unit in reserve and the empty Mycetic Spore is going to be deployed seperate. As I am reading the FAQ, since the unit is not being deployed normally on the board on the first turn then the Spore should be able to deep strike on its own.
What do you think?

I think you got it right the first time--no--even if GW didn't.

In short, No.
The Spod is not a Transport vehicle, so you can't have them separate in Reserves. If you buy a Spod, you use it. Period.

So, what you are saying is that since a spore is not a vehicle even though it is its own unit they have to deploy together.
The Pod is it's own unit so it should be able to be deployed on it's own as long as both units are kept in reserve because reserve is classifed in the RAW as a special deployment. The FAQ states that the unit can not be deployed on the board at the start of the game without the pod but if you seperate them like an SM squad from their Drop Pod should be able to deploy seperatly.
Adepticon FAQ:
Q: Can a Space Marines Drop Pod arrive on its own while the unit that purchased it is deployed or arrives from reserves normally?
A: Yes, as long as the player declares as much during deployment [RAW].

How about "because of the Spods special rules", you know, those things that like to modify the basic rules? Specifically the Transport Spore rule, which says the unit MUST deploy within 2" of the Spod when it arrives.

Except the Transport Vehicle rules allow the Drop Pod to stay in reserves and the unit to deploy.
The Spod is not a Transport Vehicle, so it cannot do this.

As a transport you have rules, that let you deploy normally. A Spore is not a transport, all it has is a rule that you can must deploy the unit within 2" when it DS.

Gwar! this is your quote from 03/07/2010 to Oshova
regarding Spores as transports.
Gwar! wrote:For Transport VEHICLES, it is clear, he can choose to leave the Pod Empty just Fine.
For the Spods, it's is unclear though, but most people play it the same way as Drop Pods.
In the Nid Dex it states "Transport Spore: A Mycetic spore always enters play using the Deep Strike rules, even in missions that do not use these rules" and "A Mycetic Spore can carry a single unit of up to 20 infantry models or a single monstrous creature within its armoured shell. Once the Myctic Spore has landed, all creature within must immediately deploy."
So this is a "transport" and according to the reserve rules that the Spore as "a dedicated transport can only be deployed, and consequently can only be kept in reserve, either empty or transporting the unit it was selected with..."
Since the Spore is a transport and even by your own words that it is used by most people as a Drop Pod then it should follow the same rules as other transports.
Yes, it is a nasty little grey area and all depends on which side of the the assault you are on.

Sorry, but it is not a Transport VEHICLE (which is the key word), so it cannot follow the Transport VEHICLE rules any more than a Dreadnought can follow the MC rules. It is not a Grey area. "Grey Area" is not the same as "I don't like it."

I agree with the crazy smoking shark.
It's not a transport "vehicle", normal conditions don't apply.
It's a special case. On a side note, the clear intention of the game designer (through the FAQ) is that if a unit buys a spore its riding in the spore. You can always find a way of lawyering you way around a rule, but in this case the spirit of the unit is clear.

Spores go with their own specific rules. If you choose a Spore for a unit, it must enter play via the spore.
While I would greatly enjoy dropping a fence of big bad MC cover in the middle of the board while I walk on from the edge, it does not work that way.

When you disembark from a spore, just part of the base of the model has to be with in 2in of the spore right? Not the whole base and not 1/2 of it?

Each model in the unit has to be within 2".
If any part of the model's base is 2" or less, the model is within 2".

Page 3 iirc.
There is also an example of disembarking from a Transport vehicle that shows a SPESS MAHRINE with literally 0.01% of it's base within 2" of the transport vehicle.
