Hi,

Hotz mats http://www.hotzmats.com/felt_purchase_mat.html is a small part-time garage company making custom felt mats for tabletop games. They are an alternative to gameboards like the ones from Citadel or Ziterdes or other mats (e.g. Zuzzy). You can get them with or without a grid printed on them.

Old designs include monochrome blue (sea, air), green, white and sand mats, then sand with printed on pebbles, European field mosaic (the latter two my favorites used regularly in my games, sand for 40k and Fields for Fantasy) and a galaxy for e.g. BFG games.

Just released is a monochrome urban grey mat ( http://www.hotzmats.com/mat_1-urban-grey.html , about 25$), soon to be released grey with printed on pebbles and with or without moon craters ( http://www.hotzmats.com/mat_1-moonscape.html , no price yet).

Also quite new is their system of felt roads, 6" wide, two lanes ( http://www.hotzmats.com/mat_1-paved_highways.html ).

All products are quite durable, but intense use eventually leads to pilling (even with their anti-pilling treatment). Still my favorite gaming table cover.

Keep in mind that it is a small part-time business with all mats made by hand, so delivery may take a bit. On the positive side, you can also get custom designed mats.

Very nice indeed but I do caution that their wait times are less than phenomenal. I waited close to 5 weeks for a simple green matt with 4 inch squares on it. A friend ordered one of the space background mats for BFG and waited closer to 7 weeks. Well worth it just awful turn around time.

I will fear no evil. The shadow is mine... and I own the valley.

Very nice stuff, not sure why their full size matt is 3 inches short of four foot though.

Edit: answered on thier faq page,
6x4-ft Game Mats:

At present, we can make 6x4-ft (72 x 48 inch) game mats providing the game mats do not have hexes/squares. This is considered a custom game mat and may have an additional $5 fee. However, the Western Town game mat can be requested as a 6x4-ft (72 x 48 inch) game mat at no extra charge. Please ask us before purchasing if you are in doubt or are confused about purchasing 6x4-ft (72 x 48 inch) game mats.

Love mine, I have the 'European Fields' that looks great with Napoleonics or any of the WWI or WWII flying games. Ordered direct a few years ago, but don't remember it taking any rediculous amount of time to get delivered. Eric may be more busy now, but well worth the wait if you're getting something custom done. A++

From your experience why do you like it so much and why you find it superior to other mats?
I'm very tempted to get zuzzy's.

The Citadel board needs much work, has limited variability and I just can't justify paying that much.
I tried the Ziterdes board a while, but it has its limits as well, visible module edges, would need painting and flocking to look good. Starting at 125 Euro for a board.
Zuzzy are fine but also need much work. Main reason not to get it is the very expensive postage to Europe (37 $ for one mat, 58$ for 2), in addition to 53 $ per mat. If money and work are no issue, they are a nice alternative.
The felt mats lie flat, allow 100% variability of terrain, don't smell (of rubber like Zuzzy mats), are relatively cheap, look good straight out of the box (esp. European Fields for Fantasy), make gentle noise when moving units or rolling dice.

It's a personal choice.

Id prefer a mat over a board. I have a good amount of terrain, so I dont need it molded into my playing surface. All I need is something to cover the top of the table.

Yeah the zuzzy shipping is really a deal killer for me also, yet I'm damned temped by its textures, should look great with some washes. THe problem with other matts its really the flatness with zero texture.

While we're talking about mats, are there any companies that sell mats with stars and general deep space textures?

The Hotz Mats Moonscape mat looks textured, even when you are playing on it. Quite stunning, actually. You will be able to fold it up, and iron out creases/wrinkles quite easily, like all our Hotz Mats game mats (Deep Space, Wild West Town, Mars Red, etc. game mats).

Our Deep Space (Star) Mats: http://www.hotzmats.com/mat_1-deep_space.html

Our mats are generally 72 x 45 inches wide, but that refers mainly to our mats with hex/square grids. Our Moonscape game mat, any game mat we make without hexes/squares can be up to 72x48 inches (we will be making these double sized too: 72 x 90 inches, without hexes/squares).

Why are our mats 72x45 inches? (a much asked question). I started making game mats when I went to a friend's silkscreen shop, back in 2005. My friend was the floor manager for one of the largest silkscreen (T-Shirt/Sweat Shirt) shops in Vancouver, Canada. His shop was just switching over to a new system and were about to throw away all their old equipment. Unfortunately, the largest print size they had was 72x45. I could have spent thousands of dollars buying new equipment, or I could just use their FREE 72x45 inch equipment. FREE vs thousands of dollars. Hmmm... it didn't take long to figure out the correct path.

E.H.

As Mr. Hotz said Welcome BTW!
The Sabol mats are currently OOP, but I agree that the sand mat is also fine (you just have to tolerate the big advertising text on one small side).

I uploaded a three more photos showing the (Hotz Mats) Moonscape game mat with 3 inch hexes. I accidently used the wrong ink on the hex print, which resulted in a strong/bright hex print -- the production game mats, with hexes/squares, will have a much subtler hex grid printed onto the game mat.

Hex/square printed grids are optional. With or without craters is an option as well.

Buying Moonscape Game Mats: I have the purchase page up and running for "Out of North America" customers. The HTML coding took quite a while to put together. I will have Canada and USA purchase pages up and running within the next few days.

The Moonscape mats are ready to produce/order. You can always just send in an email and get a quote/invoice.

Has just been released. Seems to be the most expensive mat Hotz has made so far:
72x45" without crater (no hexes) 35.99$ plus shipping,
72x45" with craters (no hexes) 49.99$ plus shipping

That's actually a pretty good reason.

Now we have to question why the original machines were made a few inches short of 4 feet. Who's responsible for that?

Without craters and hexes: these game mats are $35.99 USD, which is slightly cheaper than say a Western Town game mat without hexes, which retails for $39.99 USD. The reason: The paints used for the Moonscape base mat are slightly cheaper than the paints we use on other mats. No idea why, but our supplier charges us less, so we can pass on this savings to our customers.

Game mats with craters: The craters artwork is airbrushed. I pay my airbrush artist by the hour so this cost has to be added to the cost of the game mat. This mat is airbrushed twice (basic base colours and then airbrushed artwork, the craters are added) and then silkscreened with the "Rock Scatter Pattern". All these steps/processes take time. I wish I could charge less, but I cannot.

Those mats look great. They do good work.

However, that website drives me crazy. Everytime I click on a link, it opens a new browser window. Is it the way my internet settings are set up? I don't seem to have that problem on other sites.
