Nice work so far, do you always do the fine details before the main painting? is there a benefit as I've been doing it the opposite way.

I’m sloppy?

I start with a sloppy basecoat of the main color. Hard to tell on these guys, as it’s Grey Seer over white primer. More obvious on my Ultra.

Then I do the details. As I use a lot of washes and drybrushing, sometimes (ok, most of the time) this slops over onto the main parts. So if I had painted them to a finished level, I’d just have to re-do them.

The (mostly) last step step is to go back carefully with the base color and tidy that up with a second coat, and then wash as needed.

Sometimes I’ll accidentally hit a detail bit, so need another tidy pass, but not often.

It works for me, but that may just be one of my quirks. I don’t claim to be a great painter, just steadily cranking out solid table top work. Would I improve if I switched up how I did things? Maybe.

Apothecary White down. Next up is clean up, a few more detail passes (gloss paints on the parts that need it) and the camo stripes. Oh, the nulan for the joins, finish the shoulders, bases and decals. So you know, almost done. /eyeroll.

It felt odd not to have anything in progress on the build side of the desk, so I moved up some chainrasps. Clipped two and left them there. Now it doesn’t look empty. I should actually look at their rules. I think they can take a musician, but you don’t get one in the AoS box. If that’s the case I have spare bits that can serve.

Not that I’m planning on priming anytime soon. Still need to deal with The Swarm. But cutting back the pile of shame is always a good thing. While the Nighthaunt don’t paint quite as quick as the ‘Nids, they do go pretty swiftly. So getting some of them done would help with my goals.

Cool, thanks for that. While mostly a paining project, I’d like for them to be fieldable.
youwashock wrote:Gettin' there on the Marines. And it's only the 10th! Nice job.

Just put the second layer of camo down, just the mid range grey to to go. And all the other stuff. Well, most of it, I did the clean up pass on the brown already.

Few things I missed that I need to go back for, and a final touch up pass. Blue ink for the shoulder, decals, and bases.

Just about there.

Did a little work last night, more this morning. Off the handles and baseing in progress

Moved some stuff down to the WIP section and gave them their first coat of Grey Seer.

Two sisters, as I need to get cracking on them. Two gaunts, as they should go quick. One spore mine as I want to see how it looks with my scheme. Thinking red top, as that’s the color I use for dangerous ‘nid bits, with fleshy tendrils. Hopefully won’t look too obscene. Not that purple would be much better.

Also, Woot! Vacation. Off all next week, will have The Boy for part of it. Just a staycation, all going places plans have been scrubbed. Should be good for painting. We’ll see how much I can get done.

Allowing myself a juvenile chuckle at the spore mine possibilities. Squad looks good. Camo is working. Enjoy the vacation!

Will you quit poking the spore mine! You are going to get us both killed!

Simple, should work. The base is going to be more steps then the paintjob. Moved 3 more mines down. Glued rocks and tufts on the marines in the background, flock paste is next. One sister got her blacks, need to do the other. Not a huge amount of progress, but steady.

Edit:
3 more spore mines drifted over to be ready to base. 3 more came down the the primed pile and got their first base coat. And I watched the original Total Recall. Classic 80s. Not a bad evening.

Your camo scheme for the Vanguard marines looks really great and it's nice to see you found a simple but interesting scheme for the Nids. They look great and your spore mine scene made me chuckle

The Nid scheme is stupid quick to do. Loving the contrast paints.

Some Sunday morning progress:

Decals on. Black rimmed a few stealers that I had previously flocked with extra paste on previous occasions. Move the rest of them down to get done with the rest of the gang. Finished more mines. Nids need to be black rimmed and tufted/rocked.

As my loyalty to humanity was in question, a chaplain arrives to show the true path. Both sisters have their first blacks, and the last pair of mines just want to snuggle.

Easy mistake. I prime white, and you expect to see blue Ultras. And the arctic camo is a reasonably new thing for me to put on marines.

I’ll break out the lightbox tomorrow, but finished basing the infiltrators and spore mines. The flock paste was getting dry and running low, so I stopped before getting to the gaunts and stealers. But they are all rocked and tufted for next time I base stuff. Got the browns done on the WIP stuff and moved two more gaunts down to join them. Plugging away. With the spore mines done, time to pick up another box of nids. Thinking the start collecting. Less options of how to build those guys.

One last bit of fun with the spore mines:

Had the light box out, got their glamor shots. And a fun little action shot. That’s a wrap for the biovore/spore mines. 3 pieces of living artillery, and enough ammo to rain down on the table. First units of the swarm fully painted and based in the new scheme.

But they are not alone on the frozen wastes:

Pretty happy with the way these guys turned out. Two more left in their squad, I should get them done sooner, rather than later. But a lot of other projects in the works. Also two more sisters from the basic squad after the ones on the banch, which is another squad I’d like to polish off. And more nids. And a backlog of HQs.

No progress picture, but put the golds down on the chaplain/sisters. And the grey seer down on the gaunts. Plugging away.

Thanks.

For me, they felt like they were a long way off until just before I finished them. I blame that on priming white. Whenever I see a predominantly white model, I think “what paint is going to go in all that space”. My mind equates white with unfinished. It’s how I filter my works in progress. White stuff needs a coat of something.

So these guys went from “lot of work still needed” to “final pics” with just a few flicks of grey camo.

Glad you like them.

Nids are a lockdown project. While I did paint up Tippy and a pair of Zoats for fun before, this is the start of the army. They have always been a “one of these days” concept. But why not? Contrast paints make hordes a lot easier to do, I’ve got the money. Once you have the core requirements for life down, money should try to keep you happy. I’ve got a roof over my head, and food in my belly. So why not start a fun project I’ve always dreamed about?

Ultramarines in camo just seams strange, but since Marneus is back, anything is possible.

The spore mines remind me of a silly game i played against an opponent long ago. He wanted to field some silly army so asked if he could field extra (whatever) to satisfy fluff. I said okay as long as I could field extra of category as well. He also wanted to proxy the unit, "okay if my options are the same"

I forget what he fielded, but I broke open 4 rolls of pennies (200) and placed them all face up. He asked what they were, I said spore mines . At my first movement phase I moved the first penny and did the random roll, stopping him to see if he conceeded yet between each model I moved. 20 minutes later we were setting up real armies . Win THeo .

The swarm is going to be of a fearsome size soon at this rate. The Marines look really good. They did come together sort of like an old Citadel painting guide.

1. Prime
2. Base coat
3. Everything else
4. Done! Ta-da!

There is historic precedent for Codex adherent camouflage. RT compendium, page 79 shows a Ultramarine painted in Sub-Tropical: Forested camo for the assault on Ikkyo: Last Tyranic War. Just because we are proud of our colors does not mean we will use stealth and camouflage (in Codex approved fashions) when required.

Good lesson on how to always be careful how far you ask to bend the rules. Turn about is fair play.

Loved/hated those old guides. So unhelpfull, but did kinda point you in the right direction. And good for a laugh. At least here I have the excuse that sometimes a lot of work gets done between pictures, and I don’t intend for them to be tutorials.

So on the topic of progress:

I think I’m just about ready to start putting down washes. At least the brown. I would have done it earlier, but noticed I had missed a little gold. Then a lot of cleanup.

I think 2 gaunts got painted between the last pic and this one. <looks up> Yup, last WIP was the spore mines. Grey Seer done on these, contrasts to follow.

Order placed for a SC: Tyranid box. Which reports tell me is mostly hot garbage in 9th. Don’t really care. Might try to magnetize the big bug, or just build him how I think he looks the coolest. Who can tell the difference between a Mawloc, Trygon, and Trygon prime anyway? Not sure how WYSWYG I’m going to care with the bugs. Might go digging into the box to grab 2 more genestealers to bump the squad up to 10. Not sure how worthwhile it’s going to be with the new blast rules to go over that point. Or I might just wait to see if I pick up some sort of bundle for them in the next year or so. It seems like a couple spures of stealers is manditory for any nid box.

The only way I’m not going to pick up that primaris techmarine is if they come out with one on a bike before I get around to buying him. And even then, I still might. Although I have no interest in filling out the Primaris character matrix like I did for the classic marines. He says as he puts more paint down on the Phobos chaplain...

Did some broad brush clean up on the chaplain’s whites. Realized I missed some gold buttons, sow went back and hit them with a wash. Need to do some tighter clean up with a smaller brush, and a second layer on some of the darker bits.

Nids need their faces and clean up pass, but are almost done. Sisters are plugging along.

In other news, the rival swam encroaching on my territory has been dealt with via an application of bottled toxecrine essence. Not my preferred method, but I wasn’t going to fix bayonets and charge. Deck is now clear to resume hobby duties. And maybe morning coffee/evening tipples. Weather permitting.

Might be getting my terminology wrong, I do try to keep up with the British folk here by adjusting my vocabulary and adding unneeded “u”s and such in the odd word. (I have problems going back the the American spelling of Honour Guard) But a quiet (alcholoic) drink in the evening.

Ready to base. Pretty happy with the way he turned out. Not often I do kitbashing at this level, and I always worry that even if I can get the build right, I’ll end up flubbing the paint. Looking at him, I did just do a black shoulderpad, I should have done one in blue. Oh well.

Getting a good sized pile of stuff that needs to be based. I should probably do that soon.
