Voted for Drachenfels - I guess this and Beasts in Velvet are my favorite WHF novels. I read Zavant too, but wasn't that impressed.

And Space Marine. It was a pretty weird read but the ending was kind of touching. Also the three Kaisergrenadiere were from Necromunda - a convenient time to bring it back.

Voted for Defenders of Ulthuan and Brotherhood of the Snake.

The black rage is within us all. Lies offer no shield against it. You speak of donning the black of duty for the red of brotherhood; but it is the black of rage you shall wear when the end comes.

... I actually own all of those anyway, alas...

In my local GW store managed to pick up the old/legacy format edition of "path of heaven" by Mr. Wraight.

which is nice.

Some of the pages are, not misprinted as such, but seem to be a little off centre and a few pages a bit ragged so might be worth checking out a copy if you pick one up.

In early 2018, we’ll be celebrating all things Black Library in a variety of exciting ways – and we want your help.

As part of the celebrations, we’re going to reprint two classic Black Library novels – one from the 41st Millennium and one from the World That Was – to give a new generation of readers the chance to hold must-read titles in their hands. And you are going to choose which two! Our editors have narrowed the field down to six choices for each category – and you can vote now for your favourites.

Do you want to travel Kislev with the ‘Riders of the Dead’, or return to the castle of the Great Enchanter in ‘Drachenfels’? Perhaps you’d like to see the ‘Lord of the Night’ fight again, or return to the days of a wilder Warhammer 40,000 with ‘Space Marine’. Well, the choice is in your hands – and here are the options.

I chose Space Marine and Drachenfels.

Space Marine and Drachenfels, funny story. I umm asked my wifey politely, begged, well made her a deal, if she would read ONE space marine book I would read on of her umm novels ( diana gabaldon). Well I chose Space Marine... she did make it through the book and now at the oddest times she will look at me and go " but Biff had a thunk" and " he used his Fist, his Imperial Fist, because Fists are thinkers" while holding up her clinched Fist at me.... she also read Drachenfels...then read the whole Genieve Omnibus and rather enjoyed it. And no I didn't read about Jamie and the Fairy Hole....

The Hardest Word

Summer of Reading: Day Two

When Hamicar Bear-Eater, self-styled greatest of all Sigmar's heroes, must defend the critical Seven Words, he does so in typically bombastic style.

READ IT BECAUSE
It's a preview of a new novel you can expect from David Guymer next year, starring a character David describes as "the Age of Sigmar equivalent of Ciaphas Cain"…
THE STORY
Hamilcar Bear-Eater, greatest hero (in his own words) of Sigmar’s armies, is the latest in a long line of castellans to hold the critical yet precarious stronghold of the Seven Words. With skaven threatening, Hamilcar can conceive only one sure way to hold the Seven Words – to challenge the entire horde to single combat.

Written by David Guymer

Shadows of Heaven

Summer of Reading: Day Three

Aradryan, son of Craftworld Alaitoc, fights alongside the Guardians of his world, and attempts to atone for his past actions…

READ IT BECAUSE
It's a return to the Outcast hero from Gav's Eldar Path series, and promises to shed new light on Aradyran and what he did after helping save Alaitoc.

THE STORY
Fighting alongside the Guardians of Craftworld Alaitoc, Aradryan hopes that he can atone for past misdeeds and forge a new path with his people. In doing so he must confront not only Chaos renegades of the Black Legion, but his own conflicted attitudes to life and death.

Death Warrant

Summer of Reading: Day Four

When a Rogue Trader encounters an ancient horror, it seems like Space Marines may be her salvation… but the Carcharodons may be more dangerous than the enemy.

READ IT BECAUSE
It's another tale of the sinister Carcharodons from the author of 'Red Tithe', and it brings the grey-armoured killers up against an interesting foe.

THE STORY
On a deserted jungle moon, Rogue Trader Anjelika Trayn and her expedition unearth a legion of deathless horrors. The arrival of a squad of Space Marines seems like salvation, but the strange grey-clad killers may yet prove more deadly for Trayn than the ancient civilisation she has awoken.

Written by Robbie MacNiven

.. hmm ..

Mr Niven's previous Carcharodons novel was very good -- recently in pprbck too IIRC -- so might grab this one next week when I finally get paid again.

Auction of Blood

Summer of Reading: Day Five

Sent to an illicit auction in a city of Order, a servant of the Soulblight Queen Neferata finds his simple mission may be more complicated – and deadly – than he imagined.

READ IT BECAUSE
It ties into the novel 'Eight Lamentations: Spear of Shadows', and features hints about everyone's favourite queen of the dead, Neferata.

THE STORY
Palem Bok is a humble collector of the arcane, a trader of sorts but a resourceful one. He has to be, for Bok is also a spy for the Queen of Mysteries, Neferata herself! Sent to an illicit auction in Greywater Fastness, his mission is the retrieval of an esoteric item for his vampiric mistress. But Bok soon finds that this seemingly simple task is far more dangerous than he bargained for.

Written by Josh Reynolds

Pride and Fall

Summer of Reading: Day Six

Of all the many souls trapped within Lucius the Eternal's armour, one stands apart – but what is his story? Now is the time to find out…

READ IT BECAUSE
It's another tale of Lucius the Eternal by Ian St Martin, author of the recent novel 'The Eternal Blade' – what other reason do you need?
THE STORY
The armour of Lucius the Eternal is a mosaic of howling caged souls – warrior-kings, champions of the Legions and master assassins, whose triumphs over Lucius were rendered into their doom by the will of Slaanesh. Of all the faces screaming from within the ensorcelled plate, one stands apart. He commanded no army, and was master of neither bolter nor blade. Who was he, and what twist of fate led him to be bound within the endless prison of the Eternal?

Written by Ian St Martin

The Lucius novel is out today IIRC

acts as something of an intro to some of the characters in the book.

Restorer

Summer of Reading: Day Seven

Back on Terra, Shiban Khan of the White Scars is reborn, his body remade, but will his mental wounds damn him before the final battle begins?

READ IT BECAUSE
It's another chapter in Chris Wraight's masterful tale of the White Scars as the climax of the Horus Heresy approaches
THE STORY
Shiban Khan has returned to Terra. As the Warmaster draws ever closer, his body is remade and his mechanical shackles cast aside, but there are other, deeper wounds that must still be confronted before he can face battle again.

I was still on the fence about the bundle, but I was quietly hoping that the White Scars story would indeed tie into the excellent Horus Heresy arc. Lo and behold, they made me cave and get the Summer of Reading bundle!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Read "Restorer" on the train on my way back home. Damn good, excellent closer to the White Scars arc and dare I say..

Spoiler:
One of the first stories to show off actual combat on Terra itself with the final paragraphs?
