Like The Valkyrie being made to look like an eagle or the Religious looking paintings on the sides of those Space marine tanks or leman Russ's.
The stuff on the Eldar and Especially the Tau front pages of the Gallary.

How do they do it? I could never possbily phathom the idea of just plain and simple freehand with walmart bought brushes....even the expensive ones from craft stores and I am pretty sure they are using a lot more than GW paints.

So anyone know how they do that crazy stuff? Cuz I wanna be that good one day but I am no real artist so freehand is OOTQ (out of the question) for me. Especially since my handwritting is equal to that of a third grade child.

I only use GW paints.

That thread is gold, not as a handbook of traditional flat panel painting, but as proof that model painters can do really cool stuff when they bother to learn the fundamentals thereof. Everyone does it the same way - learn to paint on a flat surface, then find a flat surface and paint it. The exaggerated play of light we employ on scale figures should actually help in freehand execution.

The really good stuff is freehand. There are a few guides on here I'd recommend, do a search for power weapons lightning style or some such. Nice easy to follow how to on power weapons.

As for the really intricate stuff.....years and years of practice is the only way. FYI all the 'Eavy Metal team stuff is done 100% with Citadel products I believe.

Planning and practice, they're the only things that will get you good. Plan out and practice designs on paper first then practice painting the design on paper, then when you've done that do it again and when you are completely happy go for it on the model.

"Poonbeast" just takes me to a happy place. Never mind the well done freehand pin-ups, the name alone is just hilarious.

well usually you would start with a template of what you want. Draw it on trace paper, then copy it in pencil onto the model and begin painting it. It is something that take alot of practice to make it look good, but it is a great reward and a unique way to personalize your army!

hmm..looks simple but the only thing is that I am uncapable of even stick figures....*Sigh*

I guess fancy artwork like that is just outa my reach then.

Scale something down to 28mm and print it on to transfer paper.
