Hi there ladies and gents, I'm looking at making some terrain in the form of buildings and structures soonish, and I'm wondering what everyone recommends for the base? Cardboard will warp and be damaged easily, but we don't want to break the bank getting the most solid materials for it...what's everyone recommendations/preferred product?

Don't let PETA find out. I use the same flock that we flocked our table with. What type of surface do you normally play on? I'd match it to that.

well some of my mates have the modular table, some have mats from GW, some have mats they stole from the local pitch and putt when they were a teenager because it would make a great table...

I know someone who use's Balsa wood (afaik) for their bases but I'm worried it might be a bit too fragile...

*edit* what I'm looking for I guess is what kind of base would you put a bastion on? (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440312a&prodId=prod20008a for reference)

I suggest MDF. It's relatively inexpensive and very durable.

Hmmm I have another person telling my Plywood is fine... I think it's gonna come down to the cost. If they are pretty much the same cost (within ~$5 either way) then I'll grab the MDF I think.

I'd go with hard board, it's durable and generally thinner than you're going to find MDF.

Illustration board will not warp if you primed it heavily. I think.

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.

I like thin plasti-card. If your making hills or craters, there is nothing wrong with a piece of styrofoam. Personally, I would avoid using paper products like cardoboard or cutting a small box to pieces, just tends to curve when you work with it.

Plasticard works great, but can get a little expensive. One cheap alternative I have used i the past are plastic cutting boards or place mats. They are not quite as strong, but you can find them at .99 cent stores.
