Good afternoon,
I recently made a "help a n00b" thread for my CSM army and got tons of help here and the people are great. So, to help out my fiance, I wanted to make a blood angels help thread as well. She's trying to figure out what build she should use. She really like the sanguinary guard and she has been converting all the SM out of the Assault on Black Reach box. She was originally going to give all of her guard a banner and the masks, but I told her that that would be quite expensive point wise.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to build off of what she has? It would probably in a 1000-1500 bracket. Thanks for any help!

It would help if we knew what she wanted to play her blood angels like. Give us things like what units she likes, infantry or mech heavy, ect ect.

She favors infantry and she likes being able to shoot decently (she likes the shooting phase a lot :p ). I'm sure she would use tanks and what not if needed by most builds though. She likes the flavor of the blood angels (and she of course likes the sanguinary guard because of their angelic looking models haha).

She should bring in some Sanguinary Priests too: adding feel no pain to the Sanguine Guard will be fun and sick. And if she wants to go heavy on the Sanguine Guard, she is going to want to think about buying Dante as well to make them a troops choice.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Are those both HQs? Also, should she just throw in marines, terms?

She likes all the pretty angels but she also doesn't want to get steamrolled :p

The Sanguinary Guards are Elites IIRC, while Dante is a HQ.

If she wants shooty (and thus take tanks) predator+baal predator would be the choise, also predators (the normal ones without the lascannons, which
almost tripples the cost) however money-wise its a bit costy

Gah, what I MEANT to say was that Sanguinary PRIESTS are elites, even though Guards are too

Yeah she likes shooty but I think she'd rather end up being cc if she can avoid the mech stuff. It's pretty expensive and less fun for her to paint.

Dante looks like a great idea. I think she was also looking at the sanguinary priest.

Right now she would have (if she added dante)

HQ:
Dante 225

Elite:
Terminatorsx5 (one unit) 200pts

Troops:
Sanguinary Guard w/Banner 230pts

Tactical squad (4 marines, 1 sergeant) 90pts 1 has a flamer

5x space marines 80

So far she is at 825pts

She also has a Dreadnought which could bring her up to 930 if it's any good to use.

We're just trying to figure out what she should use and what she should add. She likes the dante unit a lot, and it's relatively inexpensive cost wise compared to many of the other HQs I've seen in my CSM codex.

Hello, this is Zion's fiance (the girl he started this thread for). Thanks for the info so far! One quick thing in addition to what Zion said-- Deathmasks on Sanguinary guards: yay or nay? I'm thinking nay, but would still like opinions.

Never buy a squad of only 5 Tact Marines. Those ones pay extra points and dont get any free stuff. Drop them and use the points somewhere else.

If you like assaulting, consider Assault Marines with a transport in lieu of Tact Marines. a min-size assault squad gets a massive discount on transports (their base-cost drop to almost as low as SoBs). A Bare squad can do Razorspam pretty good.

If you're running Dante and only one SG squad, then dont bother with the Death Mask. A single one (that of Dante's) will be enough to activate the effects, and you're prettymuch forced to take it anyways due to it being part of Dante's Wargear. Consider a Librarian Dreadnought, as it's THE most durable Psyker ever, and plently powerful in close combat.

Well my list is

Blood Angels 1500:

Dante (Squad 3)

Sanguinary Priest x 2 (Squad 1 and 2)
Jump Packs
Sanguinary Guard x 2 (Squad 1 and 2)
Death Masks
2 Infernus Pistols
2 PF
Chapter Banners

Sanguinary Guard (Squad 3)
Death Masks
Chapter Banner
2 Plasma Pistols
Joined by Dante

Vanguard Veterans
Have jet packs
Sgt has PF and Infernus Pistol
Rest have power swords and bolt pistols

I have a nack to run all death masks and banners as my Vanguards fail their ld checks lots and the death masks are quite effective in CC because if they do fail then they have WS 1.

I went the other direction:

Astorath the Grim

Death Company(12 D-Company) - Power Weapons(5)

Death Company(10 D-Company) - Power Weapons(4), Thunder Hammer, Power Fist

Death Company Dreadnought - Blood Fists

Death Company Dreadnought - Blood Talons

Storm Raven - Multi-Melta

Storm Raven - Lascannon

This list, however, was built with the restriction that everyone had to have some sort of Power Weapon (it represented my Chapter's 2nd company, which was made up entirely of Chaplains) and using only D-Company and Dreadnoughts. The DC-Dreads can be switched out for Furiosos with the same loadout if I face MCs.

Unfortunately she doesn't have any of those so she'd pretty much have to buy it all and she wanted to try and use as much of what she has as possible. Does look nice tho.

Best thing to do for the death masks is use them in a couple of games to get a feel for them. Then decide if you like them.

(I usually do not field sang guard so I can not say if the masks are worth their points.)

Same with Dante use him and see if he works for you.

(He is too many points for me to use him, I use a librarian as my HQ choice.)

Terminators are not bad.

As for troop choices tactical squads are kind of a waste, use assault squads instead.

As for shooting for a Blood Angels list, it can be done, but you will want to get a couple of Baal predators. and/or maybe a few landspeeders or bike squad with a multi-melta attack bike.

Was this not in list form? Honestly I think she's fine with any play style as long as she can include most of what she has now. So I'm sure she'd be fine with assault.

also we're probably going for 1k to 1500 (preferably 1000 right now so we'll have to buy less right away :p ).

I'm assuming you're going to try and use everything in the AoBR set first then add on to that?

Hey if you're using dante with the sanguinary guard.. don't bother giving the SG any death masks since dante has one and they don't stack.

Well we don't need to use the HQ and she said she doesn't have to use the dreadnought either.

The san guard are a costly elite choice. I think if she is keeping it around 1500 maybe she could just use them as assault troops instead, that way she still gets her shooting in, but can incorporate them as normal troop choices and leave room for other things. If its the visual aesthetics of the unit shes into, I dont see a problem doing that.

Also she could think about adding Dante to her army which gives her access to more san guard...I think she should compose a army list and post it so I can see what she is working with and what her points totals are so far.

what do you mean using them as assault troops? Just acting like they have the stats of a marine? Not quite sure I understand.

I think he means count them as Assault Marines and use their stats in lieu of using the San Guard Stats.

Lemme just point out again that if you take Dante, San Guard becomes troop choices.

Back on topic, For Blood Angels the AoBR probably isnt the best of places to start. BAs take advantage of jump packs due to their Descent of Angels rule and are excelent in close combat, which you dont get with the Tact Squads or normal Terminator Squads (Tact Squads are still more competent in combat than any other "balanced" troops, but when you have access to Sang Guard and Assault Marines as a Troop Choice, Tact squads starts to feel really lacking). See if she can convert the Dread into a Librarian Dreadnought. The Tact Squad, if you really want them, can be good for setting up a cheap missile launcher squad in the corner using the Combat Squad Rule and having the other half follow the army to lay down a torrent of bolter fire and flamer templates.

Well, if she likes them specifically for their look (Single thrust jumppack, wings, ornate details) she can substitute them for her assault squads. Sort of a 'counts as' situation. She could paint them red, like a typical marine, but they would have the wings on their back. Of course she could still take a squad of san guard and paint them gold, but this way she can include more of the marines with the look she likes. Nothing changes except the look of the assault marines, stats remain the same.

also, like everyone else has mentioned already, she could inculde dante and have the ability to field more san guard. Though, at 1500, it will run you short of much need troops on the table.
