"Adeptus Astartes" roughly translates to "Adepts of the Stars" in Latin if I recall correctly.

Right, astartes could also just as easily come from the greek aster + tes, which means "he who is of the stars".

Or they're making a clever pun off of the starflower, but I'm guessing not.

Or "those who are adept at sex", which is creepy given how Space Marines reproduce.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

cutting gene encoded organs out of the dead chests of they're brethren and then planting them surgically in the chests of pre-pubescent teens seems like a rather round about way to go in terms of reproduction.

This is one of those things that always gave me a quick moment of humor whenever it crossed my mind. She's quite common in sections of the Old Testament, though the KJV identifies her as 'Astaroth' instead. She was typically worshipped along with the much better known Baal. The two were part of linked cults in the same religion, iirc. He got (animal) sacrifices on the mountaintops (there's a famous story involving Elijah and a contest of sorts regarding whose god would respond more quickly to a prayer and sacrifice). She got much more... uh... "stimulating"... "worship" in the groves.

So? I'm confused at to why this is important. GW steals mythology and old roman stuff all the time. Promethium=Prometheus. Just an example.

Except that the purview of the ancient goddess Astarte was sex and fertility. Those aren't ordinarily what come to mind when 40K fans think of "Adeptus Astartes".

oh. I think GW just had a laundry list of old roman gods and terms, and sorta picked one because it sounds good, and not necessarily because of its meaning.

We can't have our Manly Mariens being named for a girl.

That may have happened to Baal - at the hands of Tiamat. But I don't remember for certain.

Ares was the Greek god of war (though Athena was also at least somewhat militant).

Astarte was from some of the other cultures in the Mediterranean, and 'Astarte' is the Greek rendering of her name.

AFAIK, The Mesopotamian myths all have a version of the Son/Lover who dies and is reborn. The tropes carry through the Levant and into the Christianity.

Athena's military function was defensive. Hence the Aegis (shield)

I think Abaddon is an angel - sometimes goes by Appolyon.

That could also be true. One day I decided to read up on what'll happen during the end of the world (see: freaky sheeat), and under one of the annotations, it had the hebrew word for destruction, and that's what was there.
