I have the typical IG mech lists 4+squads of vets in chimeras, CCS with 4x melta guns, 2x LRBT w/HB sponsons and two griffons.

Now I want to add three five man units of rough riders to soften up units before they get blitzed back to the warp and add a decent distraction to my chimeras.

So is this a good idea or are there better tarpits that offer a decent combat ability on the charge or the equivalent to what I want.

Keeping in mind all of my elites and fast attack slots are free.

I haven't had enough experience using Rough Riders to recommend them but i'm a great pusher of Marbo for an elite slot and an Ogryn ten will soak up fire power, dish out fire power, give you massive CC clobbering time with Furious charge to boot!

Downsides for Ogs, I have to take a lord comm to keep them in the fight. Marbo is mainly a one shot deal. Throw his Demo charge, maybe launch and attack on an easy cc target and win but he'll get nailed not long after showing up, still, demo something and melta bombs for 65 points!

As for fast attack. A unit of armoured sentinels would'nt go amiss... the Vendettas! Thy're mint!

I had considered valkyries with MRP's and HB's as a way to threaten anything foolish enough to be outside of a transport. but one of those costs as much as three 5 man rough rider squads. The same goes for ogryns. but sentinels could do some thing for me as the are cheap and can out flank autocannons for a few points seems good.

Yes rough riders are good in a mech IG list, but it competes with Vendettas in force org. As long as that's not a deal killer for you go for it.
