What do people think of the new Skaven? I should point out I don't play WHFB, I'm just interested in what people think, as Skaven are my favourite WHFB army.

I dont own them but have played against them a lot. They are able to field some of the largest numbers in any army and the more of them on the table the harder they are to beat. Also their warp based technology can be very effective on the battlefield. If unpredictable at times. If you like hordes of clanrats, monsters like rat ogres and hellpit abominations, crazy artillery and technology and all sorts of fun themed units definitely try them. One of the stronger fantasy armies out there. Though you will be painting alot of clanrats if you do.

There are several completely broken builds in the army list, and you would have to really, really restrain yourself to not build anything less than a competative 'all comers' list.

Hmm. Sounds a bit like people's opinions on Tyranids. Personally, I think that you shouldn't make a list because it's "competitive" or because the general internet consnensus is that it's good, but because it works for you and you know how to play with it.

What exactly is the "Basic" Skaven army frame?

Skaven imo, are currently the strongest army in 8th edition WHFB.

They can do everything well, some things extremely well.

Slaves at 2 points a pop are just broken in units 5x10.

I remember when they sucked.

Now they are the best and everyone plays them.

Yes, IMHO they should FAQ slaves to not benefiting from steadfast or not benefiting from the general's leadership (maybe both).

If all was right with the world, Slaves would be used either as screening troops or to keep enemy elites busy for a turn or two. Now everyone uses them as anvils whilst something nasty lines itself up for a flank charge.

Without steadfast or the general's leadership, a unit of slaves wouldn't be able to "to keep enemy elites busy for a turn or two". If anything, they'll end up being a liability as speed bumps that get enemy chargers closer to you when they overrun.

Just beware, if you choose this army you are going to be painting a LOT of ratmen. Easily over 200 just in core stuff. if you bore easily while painting, this could be an issue.

I've been playing skaven since 6th and love them. Keep in mind I don't play tournaments, entirely friendly games. I love my skaven though. When my rolls go right, I absolutely destroy. When things go wrong with them though, it's devastating. You've gotta know how to laugh and roll with it though. I like to put myself in a skaven mindframe, thinking I just got backstabbed by a fellow warlord or seer. Makes the game easier and more fun to play.

ogryn flesh: like beer goggles for miniatures.

That's what I've heard... But have you ever seen ogres hit slaves?
It's not uncommon to kill 20 a round. I don't know what you'd want to throw into a flank when your giving up so much combat res to the front.

Keep in mind that slaves are only really good when the general is alive; and skaven might be the worst army at keeping heroes safe. Kill the general, and those 100 point units of slaves become stubborn 5 (at best).

I say go for diversity, and use unit's you like. In the end you, and your opponent, will find the game more enjoyable.

Yes I have, and actually played an ogre player running a gutstar unit.

Slaves held for 3 rounds of combat (two of my shooting phases). During that time 2 warpfire throwers and a warp lightning cannon killed about 500 points in ogres. The slaves finally broke, and there was another unit of 50 slaves ready to hold up the unit again.

also a plague furnace/HPA to the flank works fine.

I'm surprised. My 8 man ogre blocks love to see slaves.
Warp Fire throwers are extremely unreliable, and it's not easy to get a good hit.
So far, the only way I've killed HPA's is when they have come into the flank while I'm fighting something else to the front.

why is that a surprise.

If the skaven player is smart he will have the bsb and general close by, so your looking at a steadfast re-rollable 10 for a few rounds of combat.

And warpfire throwers are just as unreliable as any other war machine 1/6 to misfire. But at str5 and D3 wounds they chew ogres up pretty good, especially when you have two of them lighting up your flanks.
