I vote the Reiver helm. Not seeing his face gives him a bit more of an executioner vibe like "It doesn't matter who I am, what I've done or even if I'm human. I am here to end you" It's the impersonal "business" of killing that strikes me with a model like this.

I think the bald clean head fits best, because it gives him the nimbus of "no one ever drew my blood". And I have already stolen your idea and gave my guy a spare Custodes head
Funnily enough I also had taken out the fourth head out of my bits box, but it will get on one of the assault marines to have a second sgt. for 5-man squads.

Cleaned up the full reiver helm to paint along with the heads.

In news that I’m sure will shock absolutely nobody out there, I’ve been building a lot this week. I might have put a color on the librarian? Not a lot of paint went down. But build progress:

Build the whole of the big sprue. The bladeguard are mostly just stock. I did cut the iron halos off. If they get them in the new codex, I’ll be a little torqued, but live with it. These are brother-veterans, not officers. For the exterminators I just did a head swap on the sage with a spare sarge head from the aggressor kit. Their guns are just pushed on for now, will take them off to prime/paint. The two basic guys in that squad are the only non-modded ones.

If you're still polling I'd vote for the reiver helm. Also I like what you did with the ancient and replacing the skeletal hand. I came to the same conclusion.

Nice to see you getting stuck in with the Indomitus guys. Honestly I like all four of your ideas for the Judiciar's head, so I'm afraid I can't help you pick one! I went with the stock head on mine if only for the reason of it'll probably be unique because nobody is using it! The head crest on the Captain is a great touch, too.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

I would go with 3 or 4.

Completely impractical...but thus very much in line with 40K.

Reasonably nice day yesterday, primed the lot of those guys. Rattlecan is feeling a bit light, might need to grab a new one before the next batch.

All need to take a back seat for a bit. I want to clear the WIPS, which have been loitering around for far too long. And the entry for Masterminds, will be these guys entering in with their synchronized smiting.

Already have the red down on the seer.

And as tempting as the new guys are, I still have a lot of backlog to work on. I keep on nagging The Boy to finish up squads so he can get them to the table, I should set a good example. A pair more each for infiltrators and the SoBs will cap those squads at 10 models. At least once I finish the sisters on the bench. I would also like to get more Eldar done; year has been light for them. And I think the ruggedness of the wraithblades is going to be required in 9th, so they might get bumped up the queue.

If I end up with a spare handle, the Judicar is probably first in line. I might do up the heads first, as part of my paint spare bits goal, see how those turn out.

Excited to see these guys get paint. Rather than sycronized smiting, I think you should set them up opposite each other so it looks like they're wistfully reaching towards each other through the maelstrom of war. A romeo and julet thing going on...
Two psykers, one doomed love.... On second thought, this is entering the realm of bad fan-fiction quickly. I like your syncronized smiting idea better

I envision them joining forces to fend off the tyranids that are infesting the workspace.

Edit:

Funny, they seem to be doing a good job! The SC: Tyranid box I ordered is a week overdue from the last date of the arrival estimate, so I’ve started the process of getting in touch with the seller and seeing if they can track it/send a new one. So be careful out there in the warp, there are some tyranids lurking in the dark...

If they wanted pets, they could just adopt a tyranid. They make great pets. They are affectionate, and relly just want hugs and snugs. And biomass, but what growing pup/kitty doesn’t want some treats?

Started blocking in colors. I think the walking tent is going to get the inside of his robe based (done) and his legs worked on before I glue him to his base. I knew if was going to be a nightmare getting a brush in there after Idid, so left him loose. But I don’t want to paint the whole thing holding him by random parts. That just leads to paint rubbing off.

Some more clean up passes on the back bench stuff. Need to buckle down.

And clean more mold lines.

Librarian basically done. Just need a doublecheck sweep and to be based. Cut a sliver of a “U” to put on his shoulder. Sister needs her white edges and a touchup pass. Almost there.

Also in the news, a new-to-me camera arrived in the mail this week, this is the first pic with it. I had been using a Canon PowerShot S95, this is the upgraded S110 model. Some nice new features I need to look into using. The big one is a touchscreen viewer where you can just poke the part that should be in focus. Very nice.

So what does an edition look like? 8th ran from mid 2017 to mid 2020. 3 years.

The 2017 YTD pic is the full year. These are the things done under 8th:
Manfred
5 hex wraiths
Crashed lander
5 destroyers
LRR
5 intercessors
5 hellblasters
5 warp spiders

I debated getting everything off the shelf and on the table for a pic, but looking at it, it would be a stupid amount of work, so I’m not going to do it.

So what did 8th bring? Primaris, obviously. But interestingly, a lot of old stuff from the deep back of the bench, and some other random things. Slow but steady additions to the Eldar, Deathwatch fleshed out into a viable ally force. Technically Tyranids, but they are a 9th edition army. The return of me painting SoB.

So what should we be looking forward to in 9th?
With every edition change there is always a swap for equipment. With GW’s No Model, No Rules policy, and the shift of some things to legends, I might re evaluate some things and modify others. There are still a few things I never updated for 8th, like the Chapter Ancient’s wargear, or the fact that Company Veterans need a sarge. I might go back and update those things, we’ll see what the 9th ed SM codex has to say. The 9th ed points seem bizarre, so swapping stuff out to the better options is not something I’m going to rush to do. Not that I’m going to take a knife to anyone, but I could build new models of put together some magnetized arms.
Is 9th going to alter the painting queue? Not really. Sometimes with edition shifts I fast track things that are hot and new. Sometimes they shift things to the back. I should get some paint of those grav Cents I picked up as the hotness in 7th, nerfed in 8th. But no rush. There are going to be a lot of new models added. I’ve started on the Indominus box, and there is a lot of stuff on the horizon. My decision to build a second battle company out of primaris is going to generate a lot of work. Mostly backfill of old models. But there is always new stuff coming down the pipe.
Deathwatch and Eldar should not see a whole lot new in 9th. DW was mostly a painting project, and is approaching a good stopping point, once I finish what I have planned. Which admittedly, might take a few years. Eldar are a more active play army, and will be maintained if there are new releases I covet. Like any aspect warriors. They also have enough backstock to last an edition at the rate I work.
Nids are my major 9th project. I want to get them up and running at a viable level. Once I finish my commitment to paint SoB, expect them to see a lot of time on the bench.

With all the new stuff incoming, I do also want to make a push to clear a lot of my backlog. I’ve got stuff that’s been lurking in the pile of shame for longer then it deserves. The push earlier this year to get some of the RT era stuff done was a major win for that. But there is more, and some of it is newer stuff that just got sidelined. While I’ve been OK about the paint more then I buy thing to keep the pile in check, I need to make sure things are not forgotten.

OK, that’s enough musings over my morning coffee. Hope everyone enjoys their Sunday.

Edit:
Took a drive down to the local GW, grabbed a SC:Tyranid box.

So I’ve embarked on a crusade. Half the force hit the table to preemptively cut the head off the opposing force.

JP CM, champion of humaity, Captain Hellios leading the task force.
Assisted by Lt. Tyvus, who takes care of all the details as an adept of the Codex with the Vox Espiritum.
Kill Team Solari is playing the role of veteran intercessors, they’ve got Ultramarine Brother Apollon on coms, to help seamlessly integrate them into the force.
Squad Akillan is equiped with camo cloaks and long range firepower to hold objectives.
And a yet unnamed land speeder rounds out the force.

The other half of the force, a 10 man tac squad in a rhino, auto/las pred, and a pair of Victrix HQ were elsewhere for this “battle”

Or target for the day:

His captain has the +2T WL trait and the burning blade. Not a pushover. Dread w/MM, outriders, and an intercessor squad.

His captain is behind the dread. My scouts/LT/LS were originally on the other side of the table, UM trickery to redeploy.

I go first.
I agressively push forward. Captain jumps as far as he can go, I plink a wound off the dread, and one off his captain. He deployed his captain too far forward, and I punish him for it, making my charge roll and then liberally applying my thunder hammer to his head. He posthumously swings back, but I make 5/6 saves on my SS. Little lucky there. He tries to rise from the ashes, but fails the 4+ check.

Missions accomplished.

Game ends at the end of the battle round, so he gets his turn. He forgoes vengeance on my captain to rack up kills on softer targets. Firepower from the bikes drop 2 members of my kill team, while the LT takes a few wounds from the intercessors. His dread finished off the Lt. with the MM, and then crumples the speeder like a tin can in CC. The bikes fail their charge roll, so my KT will not have to endure their zillion attacks.

Victory Ultramarines.

Everyone makes their post-combat checks, so not battle scars. Winning the missions lets me award one honour to a squad, so I make the KT battle hardened, which will let them take actions and still shoot. My captain fulfilled his survivor agenda, and was marked for greatness, so levels up. I give him the Swift and Agile honor, for +1 to charge/advance rolls.

I can’t say this was a great into to 9th. We did get to go through a few of the new things and try to sort out what changed from 8th. Look out Sir! being a big one for this game. It’s a game, I’ll take it. Even if it was functionally over at the top of 1.

Quick easy and fun game. I feel for the guys deployment mistake. I've done that before. It's quite depressing watching one of your best characters on the table take a beating in the first phase before you do anything with it.

It’s not the first game I’ve seen lost during deployment. Sucks when it happens though. I think everyone prefers a closer game, that’s up in the air until the last die is rolled.

Little paint progress. We are in the downslope of the month, and I want these guys done by the end of it.

Finished building the assault intercessors. Arms and packs just push-fit on for now. Want to build the second 5 when I can get some normal intercessors to swap bodies with. Going to start work on the SC nids box as my best build project. Want to get that built and primed before fall. Need to go out for another rattle can.

Nice progress, that Eldar (Eldari?) is shaping up really well.
Mixing normal and running Intercessor bodies sounds like a good idea, that's what I've been thinking of doing as well. Just have to get my made-to-order Indomitus box. And a set of regular Intercessors

One minor thing I noticed is that the assault intercessors all have empty holsters. Not sure if I’m going to let that stop me, if I’ll cut pistol buts off something, or just let it slide. I’ll punt that decision for later. Not going to happen any time soon, and it looks like normal intercessors are sold out everywhere. Not like I don’t have enough on my plate as it is.

Some progress:

Eldar is getting there, more layers down on everyone else as well. Sister got her white contrast, just needs edges, touch ups, and a few final detail passes. Librarian needs more browns, to add depth and distinguish layers of fabric. I’ll get to him. Started on the drybrushing and washes on the phobos. Hopefully get more done on them this weekend.

Finished building the Broodlord. He’s a tall drink of water. Didn’t realize how big he was. Ready to prime.

Motivation is pretty low. Should have been down in Kentucky this week spending time with family. Had to scrub those plans. Work has been rough and peopleing has been hard. Isolation is getting to me. Oh well. Is what it is. One foot in front of the other, one day at a time.

Stay safe out there.

Reasonably productive weekend. Farseer is done. Good progress on the Lib. Sister done with paint. Infiltrators ready for the contrast white. Plugging along. Should be able to clear the bench by the end of the month.

Infiltrators got their camo and arms glued on. Need to gloss the lenses, and a touch up or two. Then just decals/bases.

Lib got his blue wash. Edges and detail pass for him next. Almost there.

Glued rocks to the sister’s base. Should be ready for the seal coat to make sure they stay.

Debating what to move down to fill the paint station once I finish off these guys. Still some time left in the month.

Also noticed that there are 2 rippers on the genestealer sprues. This puts me at 9 total. Clipped them all and dug out some extra 40mm bases. 3 per seems about right. We’ll see if they need some base filler to take up space.
