After joining this thread (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/315563.page) I've been inspired to start putting together a Necromunda Gang.

When the game first came out I tried my hand at each of the gangs, other than Van Saar, and I think it's time to remedy this situation.

Seeing as there are only around a dozen models in each gang I want to make them look good. I never liked the original Van Saar models, so although I'm keen to make a gang that is obviously Van Saar, I want to stay away from those minis.

The answer?

Servitors! The only problem with this is to make a gang that looks less robot, and more "experimental".

I've stuck some pictures up. They aren't the best quality until I charge some batteries for the good camera, but they should give an idea of what I'm doing. What I'm looking for is ideas on how to make each of the 4 servitor models look individual. I've got another one that is very WIP who is running with a couple of pistols still to come.

What about putting more expressive heads on the minis?

Weren't the original Van Saar models all really skinny, with green jumpsuits and beards?

Good effort though.

Yes! More Necromunda hobbyists. They look good. As a fellow Necromunda player, I feel obliged to follow this thread.

Not "really skinny", skinnier than the new servitors though, but the beard part is right (I never liked those beards).

The only point I'd make here re: Servitors trying to represent Van Saars is that Van Saars are pretty posh. Best equipment, best jumpsuits, carefully trimmed buzzcut and beards... while the Servitors look like Pit Slaves with a touch of Nurgle. Not sure it'll fit the fluff so well.

The miniatures are awesome. I just don't think they will truly work "fluff wise" for your intended application unless you come up with a backstory that explains why they have crude mechanical implants and gained 150lbs of muscle.

From a purely personal perspective,I like Amsfeld's take on the Van Saar gang.
They look more suited to the struggle of the Underhive than the original models, who look more suited to the struggle of the shopping mall

I agree with Chibi Bodge-Battle. Plus, I don't know if you have to care that much about the fluff in Necromunda, there is enough space in the fluff to let this pass IMO.

And ok, every house has features that help define them and separate them from the other houses, backed up by fluff. For Van Saar it's being posh and their liking for technology. A typical Van Saar gang got a balance between these two but there are certainly those that favor either of these features more than the other and for this gang it's obviously the technology part. A Van Saar gang lost in their close to perverted lust for technology... Hehehe.

But it could also be a "count as" gang, no fluff needed really.

I like the idea of this.... How to make four models go a long way? Since you've mastered the arm swaps. How about some head swaps...tactical marine squad sergeant with half a bionic face? I imagine the scale of the servitors any space marine bare head would fit. Another idea is get some of the older servitor models eg:

here are some on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Warhammer-40k-Imperial-Guard-Servitors-/280599790573?pt=UK_Toys_Wargames_RL&hash=item41550d03ed for example.

Could you make use of the techpriest enginseer, gang leader maybe?

So maybe I didn't make four models go a long way but hey ho.

I am all for this type of thing, like Neil's Praxian perry miniatures army. Maybe these guys don't look like the classic take on van saars but the underhive is a very big place, maybe they have developed Alopecia hanging around with those dirty delaque's! * Maybe they are in fact renegade delaques working for the van saar house? Another way of looking at it is so what if they look like van saars or not... its a cool modelling project that adds variety to the underhive and the forum.

I'm looking forward to more of this

Peter

The fluff is what *makes* it Necromunda. Without fluff it's a bunch of numbers on a stat sheet. But whatever, the Underhive is a big place. I'm sure there are horribly mutated Van Saars somewhere on hive bottom.

I am assuming that what c0un7 meant was the official Saar fluff may be ignored to adapt to one's own tastes.
Nothing wrong with out of the box Saars of course, but these are characterful and it is always really good to see the creativity in coming up with personailsed gangs.

Hey guys. Thanks for all the comments. I probably wasn't very clear in my original post, I don't necessarily want them to be pure Van Saars, but I want it to be pretty obvious what they are at a glance, if that makes any sense...

I'm sure a lot of people have seen a game when some models are put down, and you have no idea what gang you're facing. My last one was some Cadian infantry, which were using the Ratskins rules. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to play a gang like this, but I love putting in loads of effort to get a good looking gang.

What I was saying was, the house-fluff ain't that important 'cause the fluff of Necromunda gives you enough of opportunity to basically do anything you want. And if you somehow would go over the top, you could always claim they are a "count as" gang (which as I understand they kind of are). Plus, the game is about having fun (kind of the number one rule in all GW games) and the modeling is a big part of it so why stop anyone from doing what ever they want do with their gang/army for a petty reason like fluff unless it's against the rules.

Amsfeld, your gang rocks and I like too see more of it!

Chibi Bodge-Battle, thanks for understanding, and I agree!

I really like your coversions! Is that a needle-rifle I spy? Cause that's a little worrying

I do agree that maybe some head swaps might be a little more expressive, but you've got other models to do that with, and these look pretty determined and tough as is. Do you have any particular fluff for your gang, out of interest?

Hey man. Sorry it's taken me so long to have a look at this. I really like the idea and your conversions are looking sweet (looking forward to going base-to-base with them). They remind me a lot of some of the original rulebook John Blanch artwork which was really OTT with implants and the like. Nice one.

P.S. Have sent you a PM

Those conversions are great. Very simple and effective. I like them a lot as the van saar for their suits. They would fit in with the GW van saar models better as the heavies, but I don't think that matters too much.

I gang of servitor bodied "van saar" would look spot on with the right color scheme and attention to detail (which the models already have). As far as having the gang make sense in the fluff, have you thought about an "Experimenter" model to lead these experimental gangers?

Some head swaps would definitely help easy the "burden" of repeating bodies.

I'm going to make a start on the bases today, and hopefully get on to the painting this afternoon.

At the moment I'm going to be using the astropath model below for my leader. I'll take away the staff, and stick something like a chainsword or an axe in there instead. The idea is that even though he looks small and weak, he already has the augmetics that he's trying to copy in the rest of the gang.

Will be nice to see some painting, looking forward to it!

I like your idea for the leader, but what about some cybertech-gadgets, a bionic eye, one or two mechanical arms à la techpriest and maybe some tools? Like he's always ready to do some "improvements" on his subjects ehrm... gang members.

Well, I've painted the first one, and I must admit, I'm really not sure.

The idea is to have a few different jump suit colours. The base is meant to look like some kind of toxic waste that the guy is moving through (the base does need some tidying up).

What do you guys think? I'm going to paint the other two, but I'm having ideas for a converted delaque gang, or going back to paint my redemptionists. The joys of being fickle....

I like it. Because the head is slightly out of focus I cannot really comment on the crimson bionics (but painted metal would work for me oh wait I did comment).

As for the painting on the rest of him. The skin tone looks good...as in he is alive and not a servitor. The blue suit is nicely painted and I rather like the colour of the leather boots.

The only thing I'm not a fan of from looking at the picture is the colour of the gun strap over his shoulder. But that comes down to personal taste.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of these guys

Thanks for sharing

Nice pinting! But with the blue jumpsuit it kind of looks as just another servitor. Also, I would rethink the crimson bionics. Otherwise a good job!

I've painted my second guy, and I think he looks much better - pictures tomorrow. I'm going to repaint the guy in the blue jump suit, I wasn't really happy with him anyway.

The gang's now going to have bright orange jump suits, sounds weird, actually looks good. It'll really help make the gang look consistant as well.

Orange jump suits sounds really good to me, looking forward to see the pics! As a matter of fact, was I about to suggest that orange jumpsuits could look great!

Very nicely done. I wouldn't say they were Van Saar as such as they look like their tech is archaic while Van Saar has mutts nuts tech.

But I do like what you've done here, glad to see another Necro gamer
