I keep reading about how it's unfair to take 2 steamtanks thats just too brutal ect.. but it doesn't seem like it's THAT great. What am I missing? I seems like it can wound itself very easily generating Steam Points, and once you lose them you start losing them faster. Is the cannon THAT good? Is grind THAT good? It seems like you only get 2-3 turns at best before it starts destroying itself. Can someone enlighten me please? I am relatively new to WFB and am obviously missing something.

It was harder to kill in 7th, so it became a combination of points denial unit and a decent killy one. Now... less so.

Its only something like 1 in 6 to hurt itself the first time (don't quote me here its been 3 months sense I've played against one).

Its also T10 so outside of Magic there are few easy ways to kill one.

Yeah, T10 is a royal pain to deal with reliably since it also has a 1+ armor save last I recall.

I have the Empire Army Book in front of me and it says it's T6/S6/W10. Were do you get T10 from?

GW FAQd it for 8th to be T10

Steam tanks don't like Brass Orbs! Skaven players, on the other hand, rather enjoy seeing Steam tanks!!

Steam tanks also hate poison, well one out of six times anyway

And if you're playing ANY army in 8th ed its worth getting the FAQs from the website - there are *extensive* changes in there for pretty much every army.

T10 means "wounding on 6s" for most things. Which is fine for me, as it isnt immune to poison so my skinks just love it.....

They also took away it's immunity to most magic, so now even the basic LoMetal spell will cripple it in one turn.

It's the combination of a stupid amount of S6 hits coming from a T10 W10 1+ save model, in an army with dirt cheap infantry.

Oh, no viable charge either; you pre-measure, you know exactly how much steam you'll need, and roll on in.

4D3 to 6D3 S6 auto hits is pretty brutal. You'll only need them once to rack up enough to brutalize your opponent.

While they are easier to magic to death now, other methods don't work nearly as well (cannons only wound on 4's, bolts only on 6's!)

However it is now far easier to target the stank than before, as if you can see it you can shoot it - and its a big model. So it cant hug woods for cover from cannon, etc. And you only need one cannon to hit to seriously dent its effectiveness.

Think of it this way, S1 can hurt T10, i would (never faced one) just ram some cannon balls up its steam pipes

Rare is the problem that can't be solved by throwing enough skaven slaves at it...

And then shooting it a lot.

Not true. Being a large target in 7th, you couldn't screen it in an empire army. You used to get a +1 to hit it, so now it's actually harder to shoot than before. If you drop a unit of knights in front of it, that shooting is at a -2 to hit. So 8th edition took the steam tank from +1 to hit, to -2 hit. Seems pretty good FOR FREE.

Not having seen the new STank model, can you draw LoS through the knights in the way? If the tank can't "see", they can't shoot.

Wait? If you don't roll to hit than isn't poison ignored? Aren't steam tanks, in turn, immune to poison attacks?

When shooting you still roll to hit, which is actually the best way to deal with it too, getting locked on the thing is bad news unless you can get Mindrazor off on something nasty.
And no in the new rule they aren't immune, i've heard they where before.

It is the 8th edition rulebook that comes in the Islands of blood set correct? Did they change the steam tank's rules?

Yes. All army books received a .pdf update available from GW's website for free. The steam tank had extensive change from its entry in the Warhammer Armies: Empire book.

Good catch. You need to roll to hit to auto wound with poison, and since you auto hit, you have no chance at rolling that 6.
Though assassins auto hit at S6 with their manbane.

H Matt - yet in 7th hiding behind woods made you entirely unable to be seen. Not so in 8th. So FOR FREE that cannon will no definitely be able to see the cannon to first turn cripple it.

The Stank IS powerful, BUT not unbeatable.......

For me, it's job is to support the ranks...it's also a great tarpit as well as hammer unit, especially with a lore of life wizard nearby.......

Again, synergy is key when playing the empire, with the stank being no exception...use it carelessly and 300 points may just be wasted....

Hmm... must be our groups houserule or somthing, i have allways been told explicitly that a cannon cannot fire through woods as it would hit a tree... silly GW employee, telling me wrong infomation!

Actually, it depends on the woods. If you have low scrubs in the front, and thick bushy trees, you might be able to block LOS. Since a cannon must have LOS, you might have a woods you can't shoot through.

Yet another way modeling affects the outcome of a game.

Citizens of the empire, go forth and plant scrubs!

That's right...otherwise the cannonball does get to bounce through.

Cannonballs ARE stopped flat by obstacles and monsters/monstrous units which are not killed by the shot though. The obstacle is destroyed, but the ball stops flat.
