Figured it was about time I got around to putting up a blog to get me to paint some more.
This is mostly gonna be my WFB projects and a general "what I'm doing at the moment" blog. First image is appropriately from my main army, WFB Orcs. Got the new boarboyz and had to paint them up! I didn't like the studio scheme for boars, so I did some digging on google (read: looked at the first page of images for wild boars) and decided my guys would take their colouring from Christopher Walkinbacon, the happiest pig in the world:


Specifically his blue snout and greyish fur

Here's what I ended up with. I'm at my parent's so I'll have to wait til I get home to base them and the banner needs finishing, but apart from that they're pretty much done. All my Orcs have bright white teeth to link them to their tribe, Da Whitefangs.

I'm pretty happy with them. Maybe I could spruce up the leather colours a bit, or wash the armour?
Anyhow. Next project is some chaos maruaders and hounds!

The marauders, and essential painting supplies: Guinness and Tayto crisps, two most missed things as an emigrant. (Well okay I could drink guinness in the UK but it's expensive there, and they have all that ale...)

Horses are done! This is actually my first set of horses in 14 years of wargaming! I've painted boars, raptors, spiders, bison, wolves, wargs, fell beasts, dragons, but never before the humble horse. With that in mind I wanted to go for a range of natural looking colours even though these are Chaos horsies. I'm pretty happy with the result, just want to wait til I get home to do the hooves.

Aaaaand the riders are done. I was going for a "tainted mook" look for these guys- the sort of guys that ride around with the dark lord. So I went with palid/sickly/tainted fleshtones on them. Pretty happy with how they look, though the taint might make them look more nurgley than Khornate. Red trousers and flag should help with that.
Haven't done any facial details yet because I'm dubious I can do it without mucking it up. I find painting eyes and stuff on humans reeeeally hard.
The inspiration for these guys came partially from the baddies from Solomon Kane:

I want to plan out the schemes for my knights pretty carefully.

The Kennedys: All will have black barding and field, with red charge and three silver helms on the shield.

Lord Jonah Kennedy, Defender of Harefort, Slayer of the necromancer Theowild.
Lord Jonah rules the coastal borderlands he inherited from his father, Gerard. He is well loved by the smallfolk for his bravery at the Seige of Harefort, when as a young man he challenged the Beastlord who lead the assault to single combat, and slew him, taking the heart from his animalistic horde and saving the populace. He also won renown (and the favour of the lady) by hunting down and killing the fell necromancer Theowild, who had reanimated the slaughtered populace of Ruaine's Bulwark. Since seeing the Grail, Jonah has drifted from his worldly concerns, leaving his son, Garrad, in charge of running the day to day matters. When a threat arises, he rides to battle with the White Brothers.

Sir Garrad Kennedy, called the Stalwart.
Garrad is a hardworking and well meaning man. He won his title after standing alone against the charge of a Giant in a battle with goblin raiders outside of Bridgeton. He rides to battle with the knights of his father's realm. His honour is slightly stained by the impropriety of his affair with a young shepardess from the Border Princes, which resulted in an acknowledged bastard offspring.

Sir Tommard Kennedy, called the Pious.
Tommard is Jonah's youngest son, and is a devout follower of the lady. He leads the knights errant into battle and strongly decries any he deems heretical or tainted by the stigmata of chaos. His fervour makes some nervous, and he is not as well thought of as his older brother.

(For this knight, I will reverse the colours of the other kennedys, and put black helms on his shield rather than silver.)
Christopher Fitzkennedy, The Bastard, also called Blackhelm.
Christopher is young for knighthood, but truly it is said that bastards grow faster than other children. He rides with the knights errant, and is eager to prove himself worthy. Many see him as being tainted by his birth, including his Uncle Tommard, but he is a favourite of the peasantry and is known for his bravery in battle.

The Hagans: The Hagans will use white for their field, and a variety of colours for the charge and heraldry (blue, green and yellow). They will bear the red hand as their symbol.

Lord Stephen Hagan, called the Fellhand, slayer of the Doombull Ghruk.
Lord Kennedy's most loyal bannerman bears his standard into battle, his skill at arms more than compensating for the weight of flag. He is a grizzled and pragmatic veteran, who fiercely loves his longtime friend Jonas. Less pious than some, he is known to enjoy Dwarven ale and the comraderie of the barracks more than the ceremony of the court. His keep is rough and well fortified, as it must be, gaurding the passes into the goblin haunted Blackstairs.

Sirs Davan and Anthony Hagan, the Twins, the Avengers of Muddyford. (These two will have the reverse of each other's heraldry, if that makes sense, thinking white and blue for them).
These twins are as different in personality as they are similar in appearance. Davan is gruff and straightforward, where Anthony is quickwitted and diplomatic. On the battlefield they fight as an effective pair in the ranks of the Knights of the Realm.

Sir Patrick Hagan, the Impatient
Sir Patrick earned his moniker when he charged into the ranks of the Blackstair Goblins before the order had been given. He forgiven when it was understood that he had seen the foul greenskins feeding their potent narcotic mushrooms to some of their number, and had slain the doped runts before they could wreak havoc on the ranks of his fellows. As the youngest Hagan, he rides with the Knights Errant, and has been given the horn to sound the charge himself as a result of his deeds.

(These are the two main families. I've done the two heroes and 3 in each of the knights errant and the knights of the realm, which leaves 9 (!) more to go. The Hagan family crest has other elements though- a fish and a lion, so I can make some more knights out of those, after that it's raiding George RR Martin's fine selection of heraldry and any of my friends who have particularly good ones. Tell me what you think!)

Hi guys. Here's my Dwarf army that I've been working on for the last year, recently pretty much finished. Might paint up my Anvil of Doom again, and my few bolt throwers, but this is what I'm planning on gaming with.

I picked cold colours for the clothes and armour and bases of the dwarves to contrast with the warmer skin and beard tones. Fluff wise, they represent the defenders of a few small holds in the Grey Mountains- not particularly rich or powerful.

Here are my three heroes- the BSB and Runesmith are two quite old models. I especially like the Runesmith, he's like a Dwarven Merlin. Thane is old reliable BFSP Thane.



And speaking of BFSP, my Warriors are made from the same set, with a few additions.



My Quarrelers, who I have a soft spot for. The Dwarf plastics don't rank up properly unless you take care with them, and I was having too much fun posing my dudes with pipes in their hands and so on to notice this time...



Continuing the shooty theme, my Thunderers, fielded in units of 10 normally. Mostly Skull pass again, but there is an old metal thunderer in there.



Last of the Core, a unit I love the fluff for and am pleased with the unit look- Longbeard Rangers. Got a few older models in here too, and am especially fond of the dude standing on an orc head!



On to special choices! A unit that I loved painting, and is full of character (and old models), but which I don't imagine will do well in game- the Slayers. I am delighted with this unit so I will take it with my to tourneys until it getting pasted every game depresses me



Last of the specials, the Miners. These are another of my favourites, and I have three of Colin Dixon's classic metals in there. I wish the whole unit looked like that! The Skull Pass ones are okay, of course. I actually prefer them to the current beefcake multipart kit.



And last but not least, my artilery.

I like your dwarves a lot... the berserkers are a hoot!

I think your ork boar riders are a little flat. Kind of hard to say exactly why as they seem nicely painted. Perhaps a bit of edge highlighting or washes as you suggest.

Cheers, I will try giving the armour a wash and maybe giving them some more attention.

The Slayers look good mostly because of the old models- they are hilarious. I am very proud of Samurai Slayer.

You should be! Great models and really nice paint job = fantastic looking unit!

I'm quite sorry to say this, but the minis I am most impressed with are the Marauder's horses!

They have slight tone differences, yet are definitely from the same unit! Their skin tone is also really natural, that's a good job!!!

Don't worry of you don't get that many replies, people in here are usually more 40k-oriented...

Maybe there should be a WHFB Plog sub-forum? That'd be easier to search for some Fantasy-related ones...

Your photos are very dark and detail is difficult to look at because of it.

What I've done in the past is:

Find the room in the house that gets the most light.
Find an area of that room out of direct sunlight but with decent natural light.
Find a white background, like a piece of paper.
Set up a daylight bulb light behind and over my shoulder, pointing towards the mini.
Take a few pics and select the best couple.
Upload them to photobucket.
Clip the picture to appropriate size.
Use the autofix feature.

Your minis do look good. Get some more individual shots and close ups. Also make sure they are in focus.

Thanks for the succint photography advice MGS, I'm a complete novice at photography. I had read some of the advice on Dakka but had found it (to my shame) to be slightly confusing. Even my level of camera skill should be able to handle that!
I also get tremors in my hands when I am trying to do something delicate like that, so I might need to invest in a tripod if I want to get serious about this posting-pictures-online malarky.
I will try and sort it out for my next batch of photographs!
I'm not using a very expensive digital camera, so close ups might be a challenge. I experimented a while ago with cropping the pictures down- pretty time intensive, but it does give results!

Yggs, thank you! I am very happy with those horsies myself, they came out pretty much exactly as I wanted them to. I am excited to paint some more for my Bret army (when that starts- right now, getting a car is one of my priorities so it could be september before I take the plunge.)

Agree with Yggdrasil - Marauders are looking really nice. Disagree with Gitsplitta - I much prefer the Boarboyz over any of the Dwarves. Of course, as MeanGreenStompa pointed out, it could just be the pics - they are very hit and miss. Glad to see you persevering though!

I dig those horses. Getting the natural look (instead of DARK DEMON STEED!) is actually fairly hard, and you do a nice job.

I am thinking with the new boar boys ,one might want to stipple some stubble on their snouts and foreheads, or perhaps freehand some scars or other details. It just seems like a big featureless plane. Yours look better than the GW ones though... hated those.
