I've started painting Red Corsairs from the Chaos Space Marines army but i'm not sure on what type of red they should be.
I've painted a few in the GW foundation colour mechrite red but it seems a little too dark and dull.

This is how they turn out

On my red corsairs, I paint a basecoat of mechrite red over a black primer, then highlight that with blood red, then an extreme highlight with blazing orange.

unfortunately i dont have any pictures at the moment.

I'm just not sure if mechrite red is a suitable colour for the Red Corsairs

As its says the Mecharite Red is really a FOUNDATION paint, it does tend to look too dull on its own. Try using Mecharite Red, then Red Gore as main coat, then edge highlight with Blood Red and lastly wash with Baal Red to taste.

I do my red in stages, scab red, mechrite red, and then blood red, highlight with blazing orange. This is of course a lengthy process and no one way is best. What ever way you think it looks better.

Thanks for the tips.

Do you think it would be acceptable to have berzerkers or any other specialty marines in the red corsairs colours, cus you could make up a suitable story as to why they are in the Corsairs (such as they got lost in the Maelstrom and they devote themselves to Huron but still fight for khorne or tzeentch or nurgle or slaanesh.

It's probably best that you never find out.

I had no idea so many people had Red Corsair armies.

My Corsairs tend to look brighter than the armies I have seen posted on the net. I use 'Blood Red' as a base coat with layered highlights up to 'Blazing Orange'. It really depends on your personal preference with regards to hue. Once you get one you like the colour scheme is pretty easy.

I really should get around to posting some pics.

Yeah I havent seen any blood red corsairs and I would love to see some just to see the difference between mechrite and blood red. I used blood red as a highlight but it looks too weird so I'm looking for a better highlight for mechrite red.

This is pretty much what I do for mine as well. Except that I paint Red gore over the Mechrite Red to make it less dull. After the blood highlight I use Devlin Mud in the recesses

Here is a recent SW chosen test model I painted for my Red Corsairs:
