Im new to WoC and have a very small army. So far a Sorcerer on barded Chaos steed,Giant (from my OnG army) and 16 Marauders .Im picking up a battalian in a day or two and that will put me at a unit of 36 marauders. I was wondering how best to equip them. I know light armor but as for weapons and marks im not sure. I was thinking Flails possibly used as great weapons (like the way they look) with mark of krone.

Anyone have a good idea for a set up?

Large units of them with mark of Khorne and Great weapons seems to be a popular choice. A good shock troop unit. Light armour by itself isn't really worth the points.

I'm liking flails use as flails.
Here's the meta game I saw.
40 guys with great weapons, can take 10 losses without loss of hitting power, totally crushed small units.
Hordes of savage orcs with 2 weapons slaughter the strike last marauders.
Empire Knight Hordes slaughter the marauders.

Now I'm seeing marauders with flails again. Combat is usually a 1 round affair. Giving up Init 4 is a big deal.

If you do want great weapons, just clip the top of the flail and attach the top of the 1 handed axes. Viola, great axes.

I like GWs better due to the fact that the main armies I run into are elves and Skaven and I4 means nothing agianst them

Its funny you mention that. The 2 guys I play aganst the most play high elves and the other skaven

I4 strikes at the same time as most skaven, and before plague monks.

it really depends on what mark you give them.


Khorne goes well with Great Weapons or Flails.

Tzeench goes with Shields(5+ ward in CC)


Slannesh is a bad mark. it just doesn't give you much, if you need to be taking Ld tests you are losing anyway. at least it's cheap. except for giants, it's good on giants. ASF Giants are EVIL

Nurgle is overpriced, but if you need a good tarpit unit, a unit of Shield marauders can stick around in combat for a good long while.

I've seen Tzeentch Great Weapons used fairly effectively as a 50 man horde. Not quite as killy as Khorne (although 3 ranks of GW attacks is still nasty) but cheap and a 6+ ward is a much better buy than 6+ armour.

And since marks are on a per-unit basis the bigger the unit the more value you get out of them.

Between Great Weapons and Flails, it's really just a question of if your combats will last more than a turn or so. I've played against a 40 man Marauder Block in horde running Flails and MOK, and it worked fine against my T3 elves. However, if you're dealing with things like Dwarfs or other high saves, you may want to take Great Weapons.

Personally? I run Flails, but Great Weapons seem like they'd last past the charge turn, and though you Always Strike Last, chances are against most units you'll strike last anyway. They're really not extremely better than one another, but the way I see it you may as well invest your points into having them hit hard all the time.

Either khorn with great weapons or tzeench with shields/armor.
In either case run large units, 30-40, wide for Khorn, deep for tzeench.

I personally have found great pleasure in 40 Marauders with MoT and flails running as a horde. For that many marauders, the ward is cheaper then light armor. I usually just run them at something I want to speedbump/ weaken. They usually go for Dragon Prince calvary, which always ends up in fun combats. The 6+ ward also can fluster enemy elite troops, simply because your cheap models still save against their attacks.

i like mine with shields, Javilins and MoN.

5+ armor, Vanguard, and have some protection from shooting.

you can run rings around enemy units while peppering them with spears.

if you feel gutsy you can give them throwing axs instead. stronger then spears, but they do put you really close to them.
