Thought I'd post the list represented by the Skaven: 1000pts you see in my signture. It's supposed to be vaguely competitive, but not in a irritating way. My plan this year is to expand to 2000pts, so if you have any thoughts in this regard let me know (a Hell Pit Abomination is on order and Deathmaster Snikch is lurking in the attic)

1 Chieftain - Halberd, Tail Weapon & Ironcurse Icon
1 Chieftain - Battle Standard
1 Warlock Engineer (Lvl 2 Wizard) - Warp Energy Condenser
19 Stormvermin (Standard & Musician)
1 Poison Wind Mortar
30 Clanrats - Spears & Shields (Full Command)
19 Clanrats – Shields (Clawleader & Musician)
35 Slaves – Shields (Pawleader)
2 Rat Ogres & Packmaster
1 Warp Lightning Cannon

Total = 1000 points

EDIT - The Chieftain with the Halberd leads the Stormvermin whilst the BSB leads the smaller Clanrat unit. My Warlock Engineer hides out of harms way

Hmmm. It's new, and it's interesting, and it's pretty solid. You've got your hands in a few different soups, which I always consider good. Here's my suggestions:

None of your characters have any protection. The general would certainly benefit from a Ward save, or at least a decent armour save, but I think the BSB needs protecting the most; with this much infantry, you'll need those re-rollable Ld tests.

20 Clanrats or Stormvermin seems awfully small to me. I think 25 is about as small as you'll want to go.
What's your idea with the spear-wielding Clanrats? I'm not sure if those extra attacks warrant the loss of their parry save and an extra 15pts. On a similar note, why shields on slaves? If you're going to shoot into them anyway, I'd suggest plain ol' slaves, or ones with spears.

A lot of people seem to think that you need 6 rat ogres to do anything, and other people will tell you 9. But at 1,000 points, I think 2 should be able to add some punch to a combat you've already invested some points in. 3 would be better, but 2 might be enough (it was for me in 7th).

@ Warpsolution - Yes, all good observations. I keep my BSB and his unit lurking behind the main line, but occassionally something gets round and puts him in a sticky situation. I often find my games descend into wars of attrition as my Warlock attempts to fritz things with the aid of the WLC and the Mortar, whilst my Clanrats/Slaves and Stormvermin slowly get eaten away in combat. You're right about Clanrats and Spears, but sadly they were made and painted pre 8th Edition. They do ok. If I match them up against the right unit, the BSB normally holds them in place. Rat Ogres normally do ok too. I try to keep them out of harms way and maneouvre them round for a flank charge. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but they rarely die cheap.

All in all, I'm pleased with what I've buillt up in terms of blocks of troops and although I intend to bulk out some of the units, the next 1000 points is all about having some fun

I gotcha. The main thing I'd be concerned about in terms of your BSB are character-sniping spells, like...basically everything from the Lore of Death.

And the attrition thing is pretty much what you'll have to expect with the Skaven; their basic dudes don't stand up to much; their numbers just allow everything else enough time to do the deed.

Finally, I'd still consider HWS with the Clanrats: remember that for WYSIWYG, < 50% of a unit needs to look like what it is. So you could have 14 spear-wielding Clanrats in that unit, and 9 in the other, so you'll need, like, 7 more Clanrats. It's a bit technical, but then again, the rule is too. I don't think anyone would have a problem with it.

As mentioned earlier, is two rat ogres really that good? As well as that the beasts are KA-RAZY and have frenzy, so that is a low leadership test to stop them charging. Otherwise a solid list

At 1,000 points I can see 8 (or 9 with masterbred) S5 attacks (+2 S5 stomp attacks) plus the handler attacks being pretty nasty, especially when delivered into the flank of a unit. Sure, they won't disrupt as they don't have a complete rank, but the return damage will be minimal as well.
