Hi all,

Picked up AoBR over Christmas and a few Citadel paints.
Got a few models painted up. This is my first try so I'd appreciate some tips on how I can improve.

Thanks.

These termies are looking pretty good, though the highlights are very large. If I were you, I'd make them thinner.

Fantastic start! I would use a darker grey to highlight the black on the guns, there are a couple of spots where the highlights could be tidied up, mainly on the blue, you should also either drill the barrels or make the black dots neater. Apart from that, the models look great, the cream side of them is especially nice!

If you own a darker blue paint, it will make the power sword look better if you paint some in between the lighter areas, like this

Are these your first ever models? They are very impressive if you have only been painting a week!

Thanks for the replies!

I do plan on drilling the barrels out. Those ugly black marks are just there for reference.

Here's a Tac that I did after the termies for a bit of variety. Cheers.

Your highlights are a bit extreme, both in the jump in brightness and the width of the edge-lining (although the highlights on the termie's face look quite nice, if still a bit extreme in the color jump - that's the width and evenness you really want in a hard-edge line).

That said, you're ahead of the total newbie curve, in my (still quite amateur) estimation. You already have a sense of the basic techniques and when/where to use them, which you'll continue to develop and refine over time. You "colored in the lines" on your basecoat, even with a quartered scheme, and you've shown that you are capable of painting fine, controlled lines.

You just need to keep looking at models and trying new techniques to expand your repertoire and, even more importantly, just keep painting. It takes experimentation to learn a new technique. It takes practice to get consistent results, no matter how basic or advanced the technique. I would recommend experimenting with washes sometime soon, as they are pretty simple to get the hang of and the returns are far higher then the effort involved.

Looks solid and pretty clean.
Photos can be deceiving but are you just using two blues? Your base colour and the highlight?
If so I'd add a mid-range colour, and apply the lightest blue with a thinner, more delicate line. The lightest highlight doesn't need to trace the whole edge of panels, it can just catch certain edges and be equally, if not more, effective.

Looking at the pictures again, you should watch your mold lines a bit as well.
