Subject: Whirlwind or Predator?

Which tank should I choose?
I am mainly facing an ork army with reasonable amounts of fast attack and some heavy support.
I already have enough anti-tank power and would like to know which tank is better suited to dealing with mobs of 'Ard Boyz AND fast attack units (Deffkoptas Wartrakks attack bikes etc...)
Thank you

Versus Orks? I'd say Whirlwinds, but not one Vindicators would be a good choice too.

Predators are almost always better than Whirlwinds. Vindicators are better than both IMO.

Thanks for replying,
I was looking at the vindicator as well, but the table I usually play on has lots of cover/buildings so I think the whirlwind might be a better choice.

Go predator then. The Whirlwind is almost useless in most cases IMO.

Go Predator, with AC and Heavy Bolters. Kills just about anything in an Ork force, and against Orks weight of fire is extremely important. S7 will give you a good chance to pop trukks / looted wagons / buggies / kans, while 6 S5 shots are nothing to sneeze at either.
When it comes to infantry killing, you're getting 2 S7 shot and 6 S5 shots. With marine BS you're hitting 4-6 dude on average, with shots that wound on 2/3 and don't even allow Deffkoptas armor saves. (Bikes don't matter as they have that constant 4+ cover.)

Well I was saying to take Whirlwind, cause it wrecked havoc in my games, you just need a little bit of luck.
There was even one game where a whirlwind shell killed 6 out of 8 chaos rubric marines, of course it was just a coincidence, the opponent rolled too many 1's and 2's.

For Anti-ork duties a land raider crusader is a good bet, or if you're using a lot of terrain then a redeemer is ideal.

Dakka preds and whirlwinds are the same price but I prefer the predator for the extra front AV and a better ability to hurt light vehicles like killa kanz and trukks.

My guardsmen would have to disagree with you there. Whirlwinds are the most fearful vehicle I can see across the table and that was before dark angels could choose their munition type. Plus they can hide out of view so they get a couple of turns firing in before my sentinels or vendetta can get an angle on them. You are not even safe in area terrain.
However they may not be the best choice in a vehicle heavy game or against opponents who can drop in next to them. Two whirlwinds with a techmarine guarding them can be annoying if you use infantry to guard your home objectives. The techmarine w/ harness can repair destroyed weapons and deal with some enemies with plasma or flamer, charging in to buy some more time firing.
I don't have much experience against orks but I would probably go with a predator. It has more armour and will deal better with multi wound models and vehicles. That is unless your opponent has a habit of bunching together units, or you want to force him to spread out. I found that one of the worst things about facing whirlwinds was how it affected my movement and placement, making it so i could concentrate less firepower where it was needed.

So the Whirlwind is good against guard. It is still useless in most cases. It is also betaen hands down by either the Predator or the Vindicator.
Especially against Orks.

Tri-Vindicators are my favorite, I don't run Whirlwinds much anymore. I just love the cannon, it is just too good to leave behind, now only if we can get that front armor value to 14...

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

Well i would say that the whirlwind is good against most armies as it is the only barrage weapon the marines can get. Also, when it comes to anything without a 3+ save it is awesome. Things like tau in cover or ork/tyranid food hordes will just die in droves. You are right that the predator is bettter against things it is bad against like vehicles and marines but it is not as good against things it is good against. If that makes sense. It is more of an average vehicle, not aweome but will never be useless. I would probably pick it just for the front armour but then i'm a bit of a tank player.
