I have a few questions about combat.

I see a lot of people take defensive items on their heroes and lords and it's to increase their survivability. So my question is when you are in combat can attacks be made against that specific lord or hero in combat?

for example X=Friendly Unit, Y=Hero/Lord, 0=Enemy, P=Enemy in base contact with the hero/lord

Would all the Ps be able to direct attacks at the Hero/Lord as they are in base contact? Or do they have to direct attacks at the Lord/Hero? Also when Y strikes back can he only hit the front P models he is in contact with or does it go against the whole unit?

My other question is when you are about to attack an enemy and more then likely cause more wounds then that unit has left and they have a hero and the hero has a higher weapon skill, toughness or armor save, how do you roll to hit and wound during the combat against the mixed stats?

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

If you're touching a hero, even corner to corner, you can roll your attacks against him. You roll to hit against his weapon skill, roll to wound against his toughness, and he rolls saves with his own armor/ward/regen. In effect, these attacks are rolled on their own to not be confused with attacks against rank and file (they still take place at the same initiative step).
Models behind the first can make supporting attacks in the same way.
If he fails more saves than he has wounds, you only count how many wounds he started the round with for combat res. For example, if my goblin great shaman (3 wounds) starts a fight wounded (2 wounds remaining) and you do 5 wounds to him that make it past his saves, he dies, but is only worth 2 for combat res.
In a challenge, different rules apply for who fights (only those in the challenge) and the over-kill rule allows for additional combat res.
For non-heroes, it's messy. GW doesn't have any rules or how do deal with rank and file with different stats, though only 2 mix units exist in the whole game: Skink Cohort with kroxigor, and the night goblin squad herd.

What about in a non challenge? The other day my 20 GW dwarf warriors were attacking, 5 ghouls and a vampire with 1 wound left. How would I work out that combat?

If you want to try killing the vampire lord you must allocate attacks at him, if he dies he's worth 1 CR. If you allocate all attacks on ghouls you won't be able to hurt him at all.

for mixed units they say that when rolling against the unit you always roll against the basic troop's stats you are in contact with.

in the case of Kroxigor units you roll against the skinks as they are in front untill they are dead.

for Squid herds you attack the squigs untill the squigs are dead.

for Rat ogres you attack the Ogres untill they are dead and then you go on the the Moulders.

As above.

The key rule you are missing is that you *allocate* your attacks before combat. I fyou want to hurt a hero / other actual character in combat you MUST have allocated some attacks to them, otherwise "excess" wounds are lost. Similarly if you allocate a lot of attacks to a hero and end up killing him with wounds left over you cannot spread those wounds onto the unit.

Where in the rulebook is this? It's come up a few times, but has lacked a definitive rule quote.

It isn't which is precisely the problem.
