I found this on Memegenerator. I thought GW-related stuff isn't advertised?

Yeah, I've seen them all over. By the sound of it this may not be the first taste of 40k that GW really wants people to be having though. More fool them I guess.

It's not GW doing the advertising, it's Codex Pictures. GW doesn't quite understand what their role as publisher is - to put the word out there - so Codex is doing the work (and footing the bill) themselves.

I think that GW should do more advertising. the reason that i got into warhammer was from seeing one of my friends Tau armies. From that day on i was hooked, and although i was a noob, eventually i became the veteran and 40k nerd that i am today.

From the first glance i knew that i wanted to play warhammer. imagine how many hundreds, thousands or even hundreds of thousands of little nerds (and i say the term with great affection) like me would join warhammer if they saw an ad proclaiming its epicness

the number of players would grow exponentially! all of you probably got into the game through friends or somesuch, imagine if you had seen an ad, and how many more people see ads than have warhammer-playing friends or relatives.

Every decent company invests in advertisments, so do all that have a GW licence, like Codex pictures, FFG, the PC game companies, MB when they did Space Crusade.

Chances are that you first became aware of GW via non-GW ads. Main reason why GW is declining in sales and customer numbers.

It's interesting you mention the PC games. The PC games are made by Relic, but published by THQ. Therefore the onus is on THQ to advertise these products (while GW roll around in all that licensing money). I wish GW had played the role of publisher to Codex Pictures a bit better than they did.

Their business strategy is well known: control costs, raise prices as you dare, don't advertise, be surprised when we shutter the doors in 5 years. Can we just move on, people?

GW don't advertise. Companies that license GW material and make games and stuff, do advertise.

Not actually GW doing the advertising though is it? When Deagsostini did the LOTR battle magazine they heavily advertised like most partwork magazines, might even have been on TV. GW computer games are advertised reasonably well too.

But they are all other people using GW products, GW only advertise through their own publications (ie. White Dwarf) which is a bizarre approach from their marketing people.

GW's main marketing is through the retail shops and word of mouth from friends, elder brothers etc.

That's why I think their strategy of ignoring or pissing off veterans is a bad one, but what do I know about it.

I hope they do, but am not holding my breath. I have been playing for 12ish years now and GW hasnt really deviated from their mode of operation much, atleast I don't think so.

Incidentally, I actually first became aware of 40K via actual GW advertising in the early 90's. Y'know, back when they used to buy ads in Wizard magazine. So, they used to do it, only in the past 12-15 years have they really stopped buying space outside of their own rags.

they most certainly do advertise... as long as someone else is paying for it! simply take a look in any white dwarf that you've already paid for with cash or a subscription... you've just bought 30+ pages of pure advertising with some hobby articles (if you're lucky) thrown in to break up the ads. what they don't do is actually advertise to people that aren't already addicted/introduced to the hobby because that would cost money that they would have to pay and have a side effect of bringing new people into the hobby.

Yeah It's probably not GWs doing otherwise it would have that really bright yellow and red logo on it.
GW's advertising strategy, if they even have one, bemuses me, they have stores in Prime locations all over the UK, but don't advertise anywhere.

Incidently I first discovered GW products acidently, I found a really old WD in a pile of old Beanos that my gran got me when I was 6, I flicked through it and thought all models were really cool though I didn't get into the hobby until 5th edition came out when I discovered the GW in the center of edinburgh.

And you could have been playing all those years had they properly advertised...

i'm sure i'm missing the cultural connotation but i figured i'd post this for a laugh (since it made me giggle). in the US, Beano is a pill you take to get rid of excess gas. if your grandmother felt the need to give you a pile of anti-fart pills, you must have been one stinky kid to be around at 6!

The marketing of DeAgostini is THE reason why LOTR tabletop is still alive in Germany and almost no other country. Even when the mag is OOP since years! Good job they did and shame on GW to stop the cooperation.

Funny thing is that GW marketing actively fights word of mouth (strict rumour control, no participation in non-GW conventions, no public forum), closing stores, firing retail staff by the dozen and making FLGS life hard with promoting the GW online store. GW's enemies couldn't do it more effectively.

Actually, I became aware of GW when they still advertised in the Military Modeler Magazine.
