after a battle with a "causes D3/D6 wounds for each wound caused" weapon (a warp lightning cannon to be precise), i am curious to know is this kind of weapon works on infantry

eg: a skaven assassin attacks a unit of goblins (I have no idea why, I couldn't think of anything else). He causes only 1 wound. is this multiplied into D3?

Runnin up on ya.

There are several weapons (magical and otherwise) that can cause multiple wounds. Any wounds over the opposing model's characeristic is a loss. Why have these weapons you ask? To kill my ogres with because they all have 3+ wounds each. That and overkill in challenges.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

In your example 1 goblin would take D3 wounds (after saves/regen/etc).

If the goblin unit were 5x4 and a great cannon shot went through every rank, 4 goblins would each take D6 wounds (after saves/regen).

The D3 and D6 only matter against models with more than 1 wound.

As above. The D3 wounds only EVER kicks in against the model that gets wounded, so is effectively wasted on models with only one wound.

Unless in a challenge like Agnosto said? (I'm asking re: the wasted part, not hitting multiple models.)

In a challenge it counts for overkill, but it isnt causing more wounds, just making more of a mess of the model....

Even in a challenge, you still only get the model's maximum wounds plus 5 more. Any more are wasted (although if you did 6 wounds in a challenge you should probably win the combat).
