Yes i was in the heart of the worst snow storm since 1999, and the storm is so bad the snow is at least 5 feet high in some places. Not only that but there is a ton of problems in chicago. Anyone in my area have any stories to tell of how bad it is here in the Chicagoland area?
I have a few stories to tell. So late this morning I was taking my dog out for a walk and my dog had to literally jump in order to move through the snow while I had to skip in the snow. So we finnaly reach a snow bank that we had no idea existed and we stepped in it, and it went all the way to my waist thats at least 3 feet for 6 foot guy. Not only that but when I tried to get out my foot got stuck under layers and layers of snow. It literally was the most heaviest thing ever as the snow was compacted and had a layer of ice on the top. So i got the bright idea of kicking up my legs up and the snow immediately parted but the snow landed all over my face This snow storm is pretty bad and cars are literally trapped in the snow. The National Guard has actually been called to retrieve people from their cars and from parts of the city of Chicago. Prepare michigan because your next for this storms path.
My question for the dakkites is, who else is having a blast with the snow and a snowday no less?

Here in NY we only got like 6in but they stilled called a snowday I guess the psychology of seeing a blue blob the size of texas on the radar map got to them.

My brother lost power last night. No heat (forced air) and busted garage
meant they bundled and bundled.
Going to head out soon with the shovel.

Yea here in Michigan depending on where you live we got feet of snow. But luckily where I live, I only got just under a foot not counting the drifts. Its been a bitch trying to shovel it out with this awesome flu/cold Ive had for over a week.

Under a foot? That is a weedy amount.
We have gotten over four feet of snow in the past month alone, and 68" or so regionally over the entire winter.
We have had like 4 major "nor-easters" and 10 other significant storms thus far this winter.

No one has a fireplace around here. Maybe new houses...

We got six inches here in Charlotte, NC and everything shut down for almost a week. we had four days in a row off of school. But this was like two or three weeks ago; it was 73 F last weekend.
Well, that was quite the storm. But, it seems the city was well prepared. Major streets are all totally cleared, and they even got my side street clear (although many still aren't).
And, apart from the trains running a bit slowly, I made it to work today without any difficulties!
I know that 20.2" (51.3 cm) isn't a lot of snow for many places in the world, but it's a ton for Chicago! And, it's a little unfair, since the records are kept at O'Hare, which missed the worst of the lake effect snow.

Interesting you'd think it would be the other way around, old houses would have fireplaces, new would skip them.
My place is fairly new construction and it has a fireplace. But, it's only a "fake" one that burns gas, not wood.
I pity the people that have electric heat. Gas heat is the only way to go, IMO.

In my town we are still cleaning it up. Its still bad in my area.

I was actually impressed with how clear my town (DeKalb, which is about an hour to hour and a half west of Chicago) was on Wed. morning. Went out to shovel out my car and most of the roads are already clear. Of course, being a college town, a lot of idiots parked on the street, so many are down to 1 lane. I wonder how they are going to get out with 5 feet of compacted snow next to 'em.
Not sure how true this is, but the last snowstorm in 1999 someone said
we had more snowplows and a larger budget for handling snow. That and it
happened on New Year's over the weekend, giving the city a nice weekend in
which to clear everything. They used to work all the side streets, too! But
budget cuts have brought down our fleet.
Again, this is according to someone's facebook page. I haven't tracked
down any official information on this.
