Not a bad idea. I tend to do most of my movie watching ensconced on my recliner, and there is no TV in the workshop. I guess I could watch via my iPad. My general MO for this kind of thing is to just work other projects across the front of the bench, and splash paint on the stuff on the back when I have the right pot open. Eventually it will get to the point where it is almost done, and I do the last steps in a rush.

It’s not like there is a big rush to get it done. The only issue is the opurtunity cost of it hogging the large monster handle. Still plugging away at the basecoats in a few places, and need to figure out the flames. Then the endless rounds of touchups. Which I’m going to be a little slack on, as I think the whole thing is getting slathered in Nulan Oil to finish it.

Good morning everyone. Pour yourself a cup of coffee and get ready for a relaxing weekend. Hopefully. We’ve all earned it.

It’s getting very Fall out there. So that’s a combination the the trees exploding with more color then a harlequin warhost, and a random mix of crystal blue skies and grey and misery. I think I might do some more building, but I’m not going to rush it. I think at this point the rattle can is done for the year, so I’m not going to try to cram things though the workflow just to hope I get enough done to prime before the window closes. Time to take stock of what I’ve got stashed for the long winter.

Not pictured is the vehicle box, which holds a speeder, wave serpent, stormhawk, and a lot of bits.

The marine side is pretty packed. Quick tally looks to be just shy of 60 marines there. That’s like a year’s worth. And some stuff in alt paint schemes, so not burn out on blue time.
Non-Ultra side is a bit thinner then it was. Nids have waxed and waned; they pass through the primed pile like a ripper at an all-you-can-eat buffet. Eldar have a couple squads, the walker, and the jetseer. Not a huge volume, but good to break up the paint schedule. Less incentive to paint them, as with the crusade games I’ve not looked at my Eldar in 9th. A few Deathwatch in the back. I’d like to paint at least one more of them before the year ends, just to bring me up to 5 done to say I’ve painted a squad. Smattering of spooks, likely to rot until next October. Sisters down to two squads and a pair of characters. Might be able to knock them out by the end of the year.

On that note, the paintbench:

Run, rippers, RUN!

Moved the rippers and the last two gals from the BSS down and put their Grey Seer coat down. See how much progress I can make.

Ironically, despite being smaller, the rippers take a lot more work than the normal guys. Need to be more careful with the brush, and they are all edges and borders. Got one base of them 2 coats in, red up next.

So I spent the morning catching up on the Deathwatch thread over in the tactics section and reading the FAQ. My little force is basically dead on arrival if they keep the same structure moving to the supplement. Long and the short of it is that Kill Teams are based off of armor type. For my Vet squad, not a big deal. But primaris get roasted. The front half of the squads are fine, but the mixed armor back halves would need squads of heavy intercessors and infiltrators to back up, not basic intercessors. Gravis guys would probably do well split off, although the min/max thing to do would be to add eradicators, not inceptors/aggressors. Reivers are just screwed. They had a roll in the old KTs as grenade caddies and a Ld. debuff. They can still do that, but are the only phobos units without concealed positions, so massively hamper the deployment of the squad. Still, the inclusion of phobos as a separate KT might end up poaching 3 of the eliminators from my Ultras. I didn’t really want 9 anyway...

Obviously, this is just hold you over rules until the supplement drops, so I’m not loosing any major sleep over it. But if they keep the same format, I’m going to have to add 2-3 boxes more troops if I want to keep the army fieldable. Which for a tertiary project might not happen any time soon.

Too bad about the rippers taking up more time, but excited to see the result.
Hopefully the final supplement makes your Deathwatch not totally invalid. I'm quite glad I didn't paint some of the models for mixed squads and could now repurpose them for my normal marines. What I have painted will be played in Kill Team or as a small allied force.

I had thoughts that I’d just be able to bang out all 3 bases in a day like I can with the normal stuff. But each base is basically 3 little gribbly guys that are entirely detail work. So taking longer. But getting close on the first base. Need to black wash the reds and do the eyes and teeth.

I’m not terribly worried about the Deathwatch. Rules will be what they are. I think I’m growing more accepting that a lot of the stuff I do is just painting projects, and might never see the table. The Deathwatch started when my main armies were really plateaued for stuff to buy. While I could get a lot of duplicate stuff for my Ultras, they didn’t need anything. And when you won’t buy finecast, the Eldar rage is pretty small. So it was a nice avenue to add new stuff to the painting bench, and maybe see play. But now there is a lot of stuff I want for my Ultras, who are my primary army. Ramping up to that second battle company is going to take time and eat a lot of my budget. Plus the Nids have swarmed onto the scene as something else fun to do to break up the sea of blue. There will always be Kill Team for them, which honestly is where they belong.

Speaking of which, nice to see a teaser for KT for it in GW’s last stream. Literal teaser with next to no info. Flayed one necron, pariah nexus, dead assault intercessor, early 2021. My fingers crossed, forlorn hope is that this is a new edition, wrapping up all the assorted expansions and supplement into one book, maybe with a new box. It’s probably just going to be another expansion bolted onto the old system, or a region specific campaign book.

Hope everyone is doing great out there. Been rough around here, but hey, that’s the world we live in. Keep on painting and keep you faith in the Emperor.

For the most part I don’t care about the rules. I’m a casual player. I don’t need to chase the meta to keep my place at the top tables. Most changes just make things more efficient. Melta still going to shoot tanks, flamers still going to roast gribblies. So worst case, I just have to add a little more to my lists if something gets whacked by the nerf bat. Very rarely do I need to worry about structural changes. There was a little bit of that in 7th with formations, but that was mostly optional. Want the bonus? Need to grab another unit of X.

And technically I could field almost everything in my Deathwatch as stand alone units. Not not the combined kill teams. Which is kinda the draw of the army. But I could do things like just round up the reivers into their own squad, give them grav chutes/grapples, and let them do their own thing.

We’ll see when the book comes out. And who knows, I might get the urge to toss a couple of boxes at them. I’m a long term kinda guy, they are not going anywhere.

Pengine is making slow progress. I think the next step is all the ironmongery on the penitent. After that it should start looking a lot closer to done, and be less daunting.

Put the first blacks down on the sister’s robes.

And rippers are almost done.

There are a number of places that need touch-ups. The base in the middle is done. I didn’t do the eye slits on the other two. Honestly, too small and fiddly. Not something you are going to notice on that scale anyway. So once the morning’s paint drys, I’ll give them the polish pass and then off to be based. Still need to do the Arcos. I should get on that, just so I can get them tallied up and off to the YTD shelf. Just like I should get the formal shots of the spooks for this month.

And then figure out what to move down to be worked on next.

Little biters done. Arcos need the second layer of thinned PVA to keep all the rocks in place, but are almost done. Spooks still need pics, but have been done for weeks.

Pretty pedestrian work, but done.

I should probably focus on clearing the bench rather then start new stuff. 2 sisters and the pengine. Although might move the repentia down and get to work on them. They share a lot of visuals with the Arcos. Although I think I’d do them in black, rather than red. Keep the red as an accent color.

No pics, I’ll grab some later, probably tomorrow. But I’ve been quiet for a bit, need to post something.

Put a few more layers down on the SoB and the Pengine. Slowly getting there. I’ll try a big push this weekend, see what happens. Also moved the SB/HKM hatch gunner down and put a layer of blue on him.

Last weekend got a game in with the new codex. Interesting changes. Had to re-jigger my crusade list a bit. I have some pics and will try to do a mini report.

Next month is probably going to be sinners and saints. I’ve got repentia and seraphim on the to-do list. What I don’t do in November will probably end up being December’s open round. Looks like I might get this box done in the timeframe.

First snow on the ground this morning, looks like an inch or two. I guess that’s winter started.

Start with a WIP shot. Slow going. But going. Will head back to the bench once I finish some more coffee.

Game from last weekend. Took a few pics to start, then forgot to keep at it.
Ultras:

Salamanders:

I’ve got all the objectives in my deployment zone. I need to hold them, he needs to burn them. Points also awarded at the end of each round for who killed more opponent’s units than they lost.

Slight error deploying on his part. The attacker chooses who goes first (he did) so he didn’t need to do things like hide his razor out of LoS.

He pushes forward, but shooting does not accomplish a whole lot. A couple dead intercessors and some wounds off the pred.
My response is to blow some wounds off the dread and kill a squad of intercessors in the middle. I might have put some wounds on his captain, I don’t recall.

Top of 2. (and last pic, sorry)

His reivers pop out of the backfield and charge the rhino. He finishes off the pred and pops the speeder (which blows up and puts a MW on my captain/Lt who were hugging it for character protection)

On my turn the tacs disembark, the rhino falls back, and my infiltrators start the run towards the hill. I don’t need to hold objectives, just prevent him from taking them, so once he committed the reivers, I could redeploy them. In the center I have some choices. With the Pred and the Speeder down, I have no long range AV to deal with the dread. But his wrecking ball of a captain is going to hit my lines momentarily. I send my captain out to smash the dread with his TH (which he does), and shift the LT so his aura covers as much as he can. I’m really loving the +3” aura relic I gave him. 9” RR1s for wounds covers a lot of the table. The tacs shoot up the reivers, and I think pop the Lt. that dropped with them who was out of safety range (he didn’t make the charge on his turn, so was left in the open). I charge the terror troops to keep them pinned off the objective, and maybe let my sarge with the powerfist crump a few (dice said “no”)

Turn 3:
His turn he has a hard call. Take the bait, and have his captain come over and crush mine? Or go up into the building and clear my off that objective? He chose the latter. The rest of his forces continue to push towards the hill, but most of my forces are out of LoS, in CC, or not a good target for his guns (aka the rhino). His captain storms the center building, and he splits his attacks between the squad and the Lt. A little luck on my side sees both survive. Granted, it was just the sarge left from the squad, and my Lt. was not as full health. I loose a tac in the CC on the hill, might have pulled one of his guys down.

Being an Ultramarine has some perks. My tac squad falls back from CC to the top of the hill, I use the strat to ignore the -1 for doing so, and open up. I melta his razor to death, and between the infiltrators and the tacs, shoot the reivers off the table. In the center fight, my captain jumps up to join the fight. He puts the hammer down and gets 4 hits past his captain’s relic shield. Suck 12 wounds you cheeky bastard. No Problem. He’s got a 5+++ bit of bionics, and makes enough of them to remain standing. Woops. He swings back, but splits his attacks against the guys who haven’t swung yet, killing them both. But my Lt. is not done, like his namesake, he goes down swinging. Only in Death Does Duty End. With his final breath he stabs the enemy captain, and they can go join the Emperor together.

The last two turns are a lot of cleanup. He’s still got some boots on the ground, but I use CC to tie them up, shoot those exposed, and generally keep the objectives safe. He does get one, after his sternguard punch my rhino to death, they consolidate onto one objective and burn it. I’m don’t recall if I ended up tabeling him, but it was a close thing if I didn’t.

Victory Ultramarines.

My jump captain was demoted down from CM due to the new rules. the -1 to hit with the TH was a bit more noticable, but mostly when cashing out squads. Champion of Humanity WL trait still works just fine for when taking out characters. Debated re-equipping him, but think I’ll stick with what he has for now.

Two new troops joined my crusade due to the new rules. Both served well. The tacs I swapped from the fluffy 1st squad to the more lethal 5th. Between the extra firepower and double wounds they did a LOT better then before. I feel a little bad, but they gained a stupid amount of XP from this fight, between kills and the no fear agenda. Due to the slow grind of CC combat and being plinked with shooting, they made a lot of morale checks, and passed them all.

As the victor, I get 5 more supply points for my list and the ability to respec a unit. I just did the tacs before the game, and am holding off on my captain for now. So what to do? Which is why the HK/SB driver is down on the bench getting paint. I’m a WYSWYG guy, and the only reason not to field all the upgrades in a PL list is not having the models modeled.

I hope everyone enjoys your weekend. Happy Halloween. Stay safe, have fun.

Fun was had. He was a little surprised by the flip. He went from tableing me in the prior game to getting tabled in this one. Some of that is the changes due to the new codex.

His CT got a little bit of a nerf. Dropping the to-hit re-roll kinda of stung. He also wasn’t able to run paired captains. I’m not going to fault him for including the reivers. I think they have a lot of potential to shine in crusade lists. But need to level up at least once to get some nasty tricks flowing. And while he had access to all the new rules, he didn’t spend a lot of time looking over them before the game. It’s going to take him a little time to adjust and get up to speed.

I used the new codex to tighten up my list a bit. Some was helped by the changes. Tactical squads got a lot better, and I re-geared mine to actually pack a punch. Switching intercessor squads out let me take a powerfist, which is money in the bank in a marine mirror match.

Some of the new crusade skills seem crazy. I gave my tac squad +1 BS. If they are in range of a captain, or pop the UM strat to re-roll hits, they are just going to put out a crap-ton of hits. I gave the infiltrators the RR1 to-hit one from the main book. They are more likely to be outside aura support, and it synergies with their auto-wound on 6’s rule.

Anyway, some progress:

And now that I’m all done with the competition paperwork and my coffee is getting cold, I should probably put some more layers down. I’l like to get those sisters of the handles ASAP. Going to to the repentia and their mistress for November’s Saints and Sinners.

Especially when using contrast paints as part of the scheme. Until they go on, it looks like nothing has been done. Because nothing has. This I think is one reason why the pengine felt so painful. I’d do some detail, touch up a bit (needed a LOT of that) but it always looked like nothing was happening. Put the black wash on him this morning, and yellow on the flames. Still not sure how I’m going to do those. Probably add some red, maybe some white. Been a while since I painted fire. Speaking of which, I need to figure out the charred corpse on the flamer sister’s base. Thinking black, with a red contrast over it? Might need to dry brush black and a touch of grey over that. Smoke can be white with a little blackwash and highlights.

Also on things I need to think about, the clothing on the repentia. Do I go with the same red I did for the arcos? Would that make them too similar (the evisorators do help them stand out) It does set the tone for red=frenzied zealot. Or go with black (the robe color of the non-sinning sisters). Other options would be white, which is the primary color of the army; or a more natural sack cloth brown, for going to battle in a potato sack.

Although I love it, when I use Contrast, because basecoating everything not normally painted takes time, but after that it's instant results.

I think the repentia would look good in arcos red. Maybe put a black stripe or so on it to tie them more to their sisters.

And I don't know how much that might help, but that's how I painted the corpse. It was Guilliman Flesh then a bit Blood Angels Red and after that a drybrush with black to give that nice charred look

Calling it done. Not 100% happy, but poking at it endlessly is not going to help. Just need to base it. Also finished the 3 spare bits I was working on. SoB are getting there. They might be at the touch up the white, then contrast stage. Blacks probably need a clean up pass as well. 2 thin coats.

We are having an unnaturally nice spell of weather here. If I push, I could probably get something built and primed before it goes away. Took the day off of work, might be an afternoon project. Also, we’ll see if I get anything new over the weekend. Might be able to manage a quick turnaround build.

Nice work on the penitent engine! They've always given me a Matrix-y vibe and the subdued palette works. I think painting the (eyeball tubes? lol) red/orange was a clever choice to add another pop of colour to go with the braziers. I love the skin work too.
