hello dakkanaughts

I've got a few games under my belt, but had a question regarding basic space marines and the close combat rules.

Specifically marines losing cc.

Say a basic tactical squad loses close combat by 3 wounds. That unit takes a morale test based on their modified (-3 in this case) leadership.

If they fail the test, do they make a sweeping advance roll and possibly get wiped out?

Or do they take 3 additional wounds? Do they get an armor save?

Marines have the rule "And they shall know no fear", so they may simply choose to pass the test, and nothing more happens.

If your unit has "Combat Tactics" you may then choose to fail the test, and test for sweeping advance against the enemy unit. If it is failed, they are not swept, but instead take wounds as if they had "No Retreat!". In this case, you take a number of wounds equal to how much you lost the combat by, with all saves applying.

The And They Shall Know No Fear rule covers what happens when the Marine lose a Sweeping Advance roll off.

You make your Leadership roll, if you fail, you make the sweeping advance roll, if you win you break as normal.

If you lose the sweeping advance roll you become subject to No Retreat! and need to make 3 armor saves.

"And they shall know no fear" does not let the marines auto-pass the test.
