Thanks. It’s mostly just a chunk of machine, so hard to find spots of color. I probably could have done more, but didn’t want to over do it. The skin is guiliman flesh and nulan oil. Nothing fancy.

So did some building.

So back in Ye Olden Days, early 90s, something like that, you needed to cut the handles off the bolters and glue them to the hands. It was nice if you wanted to have the gun stowed, or held in an off hand, or what not. So the question was, what to do with all the bits you cut off? Might need them some day. Today is that day! The depths of random crap in my bitz box is staggering. But useful. No empty holsters for these guys.

Just need to build 2 more troopers and figure out what to do for the sarge.

Pen Engine is looking great! That subdued color scheme is a stark contrast from the bright blue of the Ultramarines you normally paint. Nice to have something different to work on, isn't it (I know it is for me!)?

It’s not like I save every scrap, but the ones that look like they might be useful I do. Flames were based yellow, entirely covered with red contrast paint, then brushed a little with yellow again. Nothing too fancy.

Almost there, just need to base it. Which will probably wait for the two sisters to be done, but might not. We’ll see.
ZergSmasher wrote:Pen Engine is looking great! That subdued color scheme is a stark contrast from the bright blue of the Ultramarines you normally paint. Nice to have something different to work on, isn't it (I know it is for me!)?

Absolutely. Keeping a variety of things moving across the workbench is vital to preventing burnout IMHO. Overall the shelf is pretty bright. Nothing I am regularly painting these days uses a really drab or subdued palette. Everything is either high contrast or bright colors. Even the camo. The arcos and the pengine on the other hand do. And probably the repentia to follow. The orange tubes and wires were added to them to help brighten them up. If you go too drab, everything just looks like a blob. Minis need a little pop.

So The Boy is getting me the new techmarine for my birthday. Some delay in shipping, so didn’t make it for yesterday. Looking forward to getting my mitts on him, fun looking model, with some solid rules. So now comes my annual question: There are things I want, that I didn’t get for my birthday. Do I run out and grab them now, or wait for Christmas? Some people start their holiday shopping early, so I have a very small window to buy for myself. Of course, the only person likely to get me 40k stuff is The Boy, and he’s a last second kinda shopper. In a similar vein, my brother got me an amazon gift card. Buy stuff now? Or wait for more new stuff to drop? There are a lot of kits I’m waiting for, and might be picking up d3 megaforces/holiday boxes depending how they look this year (if they even do them)

If anyone ever tells you coffee and birthday cake is not an acceptable breakfast, they are a filthy liar. Enjoy your weekends all.

I painted it in one piece. Which was a mistake. But when looking at how to assemble it in parts, leaving it so I could get a brush everywhere, It was basically “paint it on the sprue” level parts needed. So I just sucked it up and went with the “if I can’t get a brush there, you can’t see it" mantra. Which is a filthy lie. But got it painted. If I had to do it over, I’d just prime it in the 23 parts it would need to be to be painted in stages.

Rain in the weather today, glad I was able to sneak out and do them yesterday.

Those are just the Indominus ETB assault intercessors with arm swaps, spare pistol buts for the holsters, and a head swap/magnets for the sarge. Once you clip the ETB pegs off the torso, it’s just as flat as the full kit, ready for any arms you want to use. It’s basically the old trick of using assault marine legs to make tacticals, but now that trick has crossed the rubicon primaris, and is bigger and stronger than before! Once we get a full kit for the assault intercessors, I’ll probably pick one up and splash a few more running bodies around the company.

I need to get back to the brush. Hopefully this weekend I can muster some motivation, if not before.
Edit: Put the first basecoat on 3 repentia. Forward, for the Emperor!

Morning all. Time for weekend coffee musings. Looking forward to a good solid block of hobby. I had a few vacation days to burn before the year ended, so blew two of them on next Mon/Tue for an extra long weekend. Same with two more mid-December. Probably won’t get as much done as I’d like, but we’ll see.

Started getting basecoats on 3 of the repentia. Need to finish those other 2 sisters so I can get moving on the last zealot and the mistress.

Being a visual person, I wanted to lay out the company and see where we are at.

Roadmap to the primaris battle company.
Spoiler:

Key:
U -- Undecided
N – Need to buy
b – Bought
B – Built
P – Primed
F -- Finished

Command elements
Captain (F)
Chaplain (P)
Lt’s 2x (FF)
Apothecary –(N)
Ancient – (F)

Battle line units:
Squad 1 - Intercessors w/ bolt rifles, power sword sarge (Fx5, bx5)
Squad 2 - Intercessors w/ bolt rifles, power fist sarge (Fx5, Nx5)
Squad 3 - Intercessors w/ Autobolt rifle, TH sarge. (Px5, Nx5)
Squad 4 - Intercessors w/ Stalker rifles, chainsword sarge. (bx5, Nx5)
Squad 5 – Heavy Intercessors w/?? (Nx10)
Squad 6 – Kill Teams (Fx5, Ux5)

Close Support:
3 incursors – (3xF)
3 bikes - (P)
10 assault Intercessors (Px5, Nx5)
** Need another 4 marines** (Ux4)

Fire Support (HS)
2x5 Hellblasters (Px5, Fx5)
3 Suppressors – (Px3)
3 Aggressors- (Px3)
3 Melta gravis guys (Px3)

Things to buy:
Apothecary
10x Intercessors
10x Assault intercessors (when released) will be the back half of the autobolt and assault intercessor squads
10x Heavy intercessors
5x assorted brothers for KT use (probably more intercessors)
4x insert FA pick

So I have 10 intercessor bodies unbuilt. Some arms were used for the autobolt rifle squad. (I also have one phobos body kicking around, not that he fits in the company.) 5 to build as snipers, 5 for the back half of a basic rife squad.

The waiting game for news on releases is getting a little tiring. Will there be mega-forces this year? What’s the KT release at the start of next? When are the full kits releasing for all the stuff previewed? It’s a little personally irksome for me due to where my birthday falls. I try not to buy stuff for myself leading up to it, and I try not to buy stuff for myself leading up to Christmas. This leaves a very narrow window in mid November where I can buy things for myself. And I’ve got a gift card from my brother burning a hole in my pocket. If they don’t do the megaforces this year, will they do more combat patrols? Neither of the ones they released look good to me. The BA we’ve seen pics of also fails to impress. I haven’t painted up the agressors I have for my Ultras yet, and they got a (needed) nerf in the last book, so just seem OK now. And despite good rules, zero interest in the warsuit.

As we are past the time to prime outside, there is not a big rush to get more stuff, and I should just take the long view and wait. But retail therapy is a thing, and I’d like some new shiny things to build. I could always grab some more bugs. One issue with that is again the waiting game. I’m getting to the point where the stuff I want I might only need one box of, so want to see if they come out with a holiday bundle. I still have a unit of stealers to build from the SC box, that will kill some time and expand the horde a little.

Well, the coffee is getting cold, and the day is getting on. Time to do something constructive. Enjoy your weekends all.

(I took pics last week of another game with The Boy. I need to write up a little BatRep. Later)

Quick plug into Battlescribe puts it at 3,100 points with what I have planned. Which is still a FA slot shy, and lacks any dreads or transports. If I tack on a dread or two, and allocate my repulsor, that number is going to go up. I really should plan on getting a impulsor or two as well. I was kind of hopeing to see the sprue layout of the new grav tanks and see how easy it would be to set them up for a duel build. I think with minimal work I should be able to make closed back impulsors from them. Not a huge fan of the open bed of the impulsors. Metal boxes. This is the way.

So not 100% happy with the gals, but a lot of that is the eyes, so nothing new. But that’s the last of the battle sister squad. Or will be when they are based.

With them out of the way, the last two models for this month can move up to the paintbench.

Already some basecoats on the gals in back, so they will need to play catch up.

Hopefully they will all hold together as an army. Not just the stuff from this box, but prior stuff I’ve done. And was done by other people. Once I finished everything and get it delivered, I’ll see if I can convince my friend to get some army shots.

Edit:
These gals better hurry up and get their souls in order. Something very large and hungry just joined them on the paint bench. The end in neigh. Well, not the end of painting; that’s still a ways off. But they better rev up those chainswords and pray for salvation.

Sinners vs. Snake, round one: FIGHT!

I’m honestly not sure how this would play out on the table. You’d think the giant death snake would just nom all the ladies, but they have a buff character and giant chainswords. Anyway, looked better to do the WIP pic as a face off, so there we go. Brought the late comers up to speed, although the mistress needs a totally different scheme. Trygon has his purple and touch up pass done, next step is the fleshtone.

So it’s been a bit, but I promised a bat rep. Going to be sketchy, as I (again) was light on pics and it was a while ago.

Mission required up to reserve half out armies, progressively scored objectives, end game score by how many table quarters you spent an action scouting.

First lesson was the importance of objective placement. While it might be tempting to just plop one in the middle of each table quarter for this mission, I was able to place two in a spot where I could cover them both with my firebase. By infiltraters grabbed a 3rd with their deployment, giving me an edge on objectives for most of the game. (one in under the Pred, his is in the back ruins with an intercessor squad on it)

He commits his reivers, LT, and later his captain to remove my infiltrators from the back hill. I send my jump captain in to back them up. It takes a few turns, and leaves them well out of position, but he eventually cleans me off that quarter.

He also pushed forward across the center, taking casualties, but not going down without a fight. I reinforce with my tacs.

Turn 3 his dread and another intercessor squad show up near my side. His dread goes up the hill and kills my pred, and mangles the rhino a bit with the MM. At this point the sternguard is also in place, and almost made the game a lot closer, but for mutual screwups on both sides. He just had the powerfist sarge left, in the open. I declined to charge, figuring I’d wait for him to charge me (he might not make it). At the start of his movement phase, when you take the action to recon quarters, I had an “oh CRAP” moment. If he was in my quarter, he could just scout it for free VP. He was literally just on his side of the table though.

Late game my speeder comes in and larks about his table quarter, scouting it, and then popping a few shots around. I mop up my table quarter.

Progressive VP for objectives are pretty close, but I scouted the whole table, while he only did 3/4. So the final tally was a bit more one sided then the game looked. Fun was had on both sides. I think this was also the first time we actually bothered with reserves. Something to keep in mind for future games.

Honestly, the rippers were more of a PITA. Sure, he’s a tall drink of venom, but the contrast takes care of most of the detail. So far, I’ve done him entirely with big brushes. Next pass will be the black wash on the reds, and then a small brush pass to catch all the little spots I missed. There are a few, but not that many. Plus the eyes, teeth, and the poison glands on the tail. Could I feather some lighter shades on the edges of the armor? Yes. Will I? Not right away. One thing with the ‘Nids is expectation management. They are being painted to a table-top standard with mostly contrast paints. Once it gets to a fieldable level, I might go over the whole army doing detail passes. Like pick up a pot of a lavender and edge some armor. But I’m not going to do that right now.

I meant to get more done on the sisters, and some terrain work as well. Woops. I have tomorrow off as well, we’ll see what happens.

Edit:
Also, I need to give some props to the monster painting handle. It might have been a little rough getting the big guy on there, but I’ve been flipping around to get the right angle on all those snakey and stabby bits, and he’s been rock solid. Good grip, comfortable handle that I feel secure with, can spin him around to get the brush where I need it. Quite happy.

Very much. While it would benefit from a little more work, the basic scheme scales up well. Time to buy more big bugs.
Argive wrote:I do like that model.

Fully agree. Back when things were low detail plastic or metal, there were some pretty severe limits on what they could do. That said, they did a great job within those restraints. With more modern techniques and machines, they can do amazing work bringing things to the table. There is the old argument of should they, in the case of a lot of minis being held up on swirly smoke and ribbons, where they look great on the shelf, but are impractical for game use or transport. But for models like the Trygon here, they found a great balance.

I think the snaky ‘nids are my favorite atheistically. This guy is one of the reasons I started my nid army. Gotta love the giant spiky death noodle.

Who is ready to be based:

Honestly did not take that much more work than a little gribbly guy. Sure there was more canvas to cover, but I could use a bigger brush. More time to spot check for places I missed, and there were a bunch of them. Some were just spots I missed, or little spots where a bubble caught in a detail and kept the paint out. Not hard to fix, but a lot of flipping him around looking at every angle for spots of the grey showing.

I’m liking the look of the Nid battleforce. Would have preferred gaunts to stealers, but the tyrant/guard/exocrine were on my to buy list, plastic gargoyles will let me flesh out the old metals I have into a valid squad (or two, need to check). The stealers, while a bit redundant, will at least be the same era as the ones from the SC box, so a big blob of them will look more uniform. Rather then a collection of assorted ones scraped together from pretty much every era of the game.

Now that the big handle is free, I need to think if there is anything I can use it for. I’ve got the pair of Eldar War Walkers, but it would also work for the outriders and probably the cents. Although I should probably focus more on the sisters and get them moving along before I distract myself too much.
