Hey everybody. This is my first time posting on the DakkaDakka blog section, so here goes nothing.

These are the bases I plan on using for my GK army when they get the new release next month. They were purchased from dragonforge.com. I highly recommend these bases, as they look great and had practically no cleaning necessary for the edges.

So please, give me some feedback. Positive or negative, just not hate-mail lol.

UPDATE - Got the dread primed (black) and based (Boltgun Metal) but now I'm struggling with how to proceed with the painting.

I've washed it with a SUPER diluted badaab black wash, but I really want to get a blue tint going in the corners and edges where the plates meet. However, I'm just not liking any of the results.

I've looked at multiple tutorials, and tried their methods, but none of them really seem to work. Any suggestions?

I've got the blue ink from GW that they all the one's I've seen use, but again, not having much luck.

Will try to get pics up tomorrow. Thanks!

Liking the bases, especially the one with the Tai Chi (yin-yang symbol) on it. Of course, that could be my bias as a practitioner of the similarly-named art.

It's also apparently auspicious to have it oriented as you have.

Are you still to learn that the end and perfection of our victories is to avoid the vices and infirmities of those whom we subdue?

Reason well from the beginning and then there will never be any need to look back with confusion and doubt.

Find it kinda odd you've got dozens of fleur de lis and then one ying-yang swirl. I see them as aesthetically divergent.

But man those are some beautiful bases.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Oreo_Golem: Yeah, that was my biggest concern with the yin/yang base. I really liked what it brought to the table, but was worried how it would looks since it came from a different base set all together. But I really like how it turned out, i think it blends nicely.

But I don't think the randomness of it will hurt too much, specially once i get a dread on it and possibly a dead daemon/chaos unit even. Also, a lot, and i mean a LOT of the finished units and bases will be covered in gore - I like my grey knights red!

HAPPY DAY!

Just got my late b-day gift from the group I game with and oh am I ever Excited!

Brand new Storm Raven and Crusader for the GK's! Also, almost finished refinishing a poorly constructed Crusader that I got in a trade. Have the body parts stripped down and just got done filing off most of the glue and torn plastic - looks almost like new, but the pats that are rough will easily look like standard wear and tear/battle damage.

Also, still have a leftover Salamander painted redeemer, which will also begin the arduous process of the simple green strip.

Brings the total for the GK's to...

2 x LRC/LRR (Have both weapons magnetized for change)
1 x LRR - will be nice to have an excuse to use one, because I can't change it out
1 x Storm Raven - REALLY WANTED THIS ONE!!
1 x Inquisitor w/ combi weapon

And if that's not enough, tomorrow is 40k Friday, the one night a week where our group gets together to talk s**t, chew bubblegum, and play 40k.

CAN'T WAIT!!! Hope to get the refurbished LRC primed tomorrow, and possibly have the internal components painted and assembled by Saturday Morning.

And no, I have not forgotten about my Ven. Dread, just need to quench the thirst for creation!!!

Well, got a little farther this weekend than I though I would.

What you see before you is my WIP LRC/R MK I - MK I cause the next one will be from a brand new kit, not a torn down one.

Nother update for those who care to look. Got 95% of details done on the Redeemer. Still need to do some additions (seals, scrolls, etc.) but should have it done in short order. Then it sill be a simple dirtying up of the area round the treads, the smokestacks, gunbarrels, and some battle damage and we'll be good!

I'm really excited about the near finished result, so please let me know what you think!

Looking good so far, I would love to see how a mech heavy GK list does in a game.

What kind of troops are you going to run?

The bases are just amazing. I never thought of doing them before adding the models. Basing was always an afterthought to me, but you've made just as important as the model itself. I think I will try this with my next set of models.

Amazing job.

Thank you! I love how the grey knights color scheme is so cohesive. The one thing I'm still trying to work out is a good asurman blue or watered down blue ink wash to lay over the recesses of the army to give it a little bit of subtlety and pop. Trial and error on that one. I'll keep you posted.

BLACKHAND wrote:Looking good so far, I would love to see how a mech heavy GK list does in a game.

That sir, is the BIG question. I've been trying to build a list for the past few days since the codex got sent out in the black box. Got to take a look at one and got all the actual unit info. It's a vexing problem. At this point, I'm leaning towards...

HQ Grand Master 1 Nemesis Halbred 180
Troop Strike Squad 10 2 x Psycannon, 8 x Force Halbred, Psybolt Ammo 280
Troop Terminator Squad 10 2 x Psycannon, 8 x Force Halbred, Psybolt Ammo 460
Fast Interceptor Squad 5 Psycannon, 4 x Force Halbred, Psybolt Ammo 180
Transport Rhino 2 2 x Hunter-Killer, 2 x Extra Armor 130

Total is 1210 for now

Thinking of swaping out the halberds though to be honest - atleast maybe puttin in a couple warding staves here or there (one in the interceptor squad possibly) and maybe a daemonhammer, but most likely a couple falchions...

Would split the Strike squad to take a rhino a piece, and stick the grandmaster with the termies, or split the termies up if we're running objectives and use grandmaster to make both of them and interceptor scoring units.

However, I'm REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY open to advice and suggestions. The units are just so different than anything else I've ever run (also a SW player, Nids, and have done old gk's).

One of the most promising builds I saw before the codex release was based off the leaked early version and it ran two full strike squads in stormravens, a grandmaster, and three dreadknights.

I have been toying with one army concept - bear with me - it would be what i call a 'blink' force. Lots of deepstriking, fast attack, and teleport homers. Would rely on a librarian or possibly two, and using their teleport ability to constantly change up how the board looks. Warping dreadknights into battle near them, or one i though would be excellent, a landraider filled with paladin squad..... I LOVE THOSE GUYS - just wish they were more plausible and better priced...

so yeah, the simplest way to answer the question is i'm still thinking. I want help though, so please, if you have any advice or suggestions, even one little tidbit, please share. That's why I made this blog. To show what I've done and figure out how to make it better.

Truthfully, I never had cared about basing either. I did a lame job of it in the past, but grey knights have always been my army. Their fluff, their character, just everything about them I love. So I wanted to do them justice - this is going to be 'my baby' of armies if you know what I mean. I'm not going to sit down and spend a couple hours cleaning and assembling them just to throw them on bases for playability sake. I plan on spending hours on whole 5 man squads, greenstuffing gaps, and making sure each one looks epic. Then I'm planning on priming, basecoating, blue and black washing them off the base, then possibly, POSSIBLY attaching them at that point as I shouldn't run a risk of getting anything on the bases.

The one thing I can say about bases is that I may never go back to static, flat bases again. And you shouldn't either - gives your army so much more character.

Just can't wait to gorify them either!

Yup. One thing I will say about it (not sure if it's a common problem or if it's just an isolated incident) is that I have to shake it REALLY well before use. It likes to separate almost too quickly. But yeah, it's a great color. I still need to hit mine with an uber thin wash of badab black just to bring it to the same tone as the rest of the tank.

Those bases look fantastic. They look like they're ready for a professional shoot. Very well done.

If I might add a suggestion, you might want to thin down your paints and add the color in coats. You've got those bases popping nicely, but there's something off-putting about the books and white on the figurines.

Love the GKs though, so consider me subscribed!

Yeah, I've noticed MechRed seems to congeal into lumps too, and the pigment sinking. I just need to remember to REALLY shake it before use.

Also, how did you get the silver so...flat? Mine's always seems to come up streaky, even after a few thin coats.

I agree - the white just isn't right as of yet, but never fear, I have a plan! may be a cop out, but it's a plan. I've had to touch up a lot of spots on the tank, and since I'm still not quite done (need to add seals and etc), I'm holding off on the final washes. Once I get everything put on and painted up, I'm going to move through a series of washes to bring things up to the same level and also to tone down and merge others.

What I'm really excited about is the battle damage that's going to come after everything else. Some bullet holes here, couple melta streaks there - it will definitely be a learning experience haha!

Well, the basecoat is boltgun metal - only the sword on the book is Mythril Silver - and i washed it with that uber thin wash of badaab black again. It's remarkable really, make it almost nothing but water and it works great to tone it down just enough.

Yeah I do my GK in boltgun instead of mithril, the silver is just too gaudy and bright except for highlights.

As for troop choices I am afraid I am not the guy to ask, not only do I rarely win a game but my GK army is only just squeaking in at 1850 when I add in every model I own, but I really can't afford the new plastics at the moment so an all metal army will have to do.

I have got a BA dread kit on the way to convert into a Dreadknight though so that should be fun!

Nice. I was considering buying the BA chaplain dread arm to add to my ven dread shown above - then I found out that they get the nemesis doomfist and all it would really serve a purpose for would be flash and pizzaz...

...not that pizzaz would be a BAD thing lol

Actually, let me get some feedback from everyone on this - I'm thinking of ordering a set of FW GK LR doors for my other LRC before I start up on the assembly.

Any thoughts? If I were to get one, would probably be the one with the winged Inquisitorial I filled with skulls.

I have a set of doors as well as the LR front hatch, they really do look nice.

And IMHO the doomfist looks rubbish, just an oversized termie hand, anything you can do to make it look more "doomfisty" (its a word look it up!) will help.

I thought about taking the standard fist and giving it the power weapon in the doomfist.... meh... could be nice.

Lol any chance you have a second set of doors you wouldn't mind trading or selling my way? =P just curious!

Sorry bud, no spares . While I may have the smallest and most uncompetitive GK list in history I still want to keep it.

Daemonhunters were my first army and I still have a soft spot for them, Still wondering whether to add in an inquisitor and retinue to my list..will have to get the codex before I make any decisions

While I would NEVER support casting of other peoples bits *wink*, I do have a couple things of instamold. It works pretty slick, but I"m still working on getting used to how the stuff works. I'm thinking I need to make a mechanism to hold the stuff so that it forms evenly around the bit or model.

I'm thinking something like this:
__

________

Probably do the lego thing everyone else uses... But a greenstuff mold would be better if I wanted to make my own doors, as those are items which I will need Constantly. Any suggestions on how to do it effectively? I'll try to get some copies of what little I've done with it online.

First page has some places to try in various countries, I am just not sure where in the states you would go to buy it.

Believe me when I say you will not actually save money by reproducing bits, but if you need multiples of one particular piece then it is a handy skill to have.
