I'm making a close combat Carnifex. Scything Talons, Tusked, Mace Tail, Crushing Claws, the works. I was thinking of making it Thornbacked but it's 15pts and I'm just wondering if it's worth it for this biomorph. Does it make a difference in games?

Thornback is a biomorph that, on paper, looks pretty worthless (see: http://www.dakkadakka.com/Articles/tabid/96/ArticleType/ArticleView/ArticleID/5/PageID/5/Default.aspx )

But I'm not convinced that it can't be used properly if used in conjunction with units.  Such as having Genestealers run with the Carnifex and using their massive Init to massacre units that the Carnifex broke.  Though it'd be necessary to hit the middle of the opponents army to have a chance consoldiating into another unit or hit an extreme flank to avoid return fire.

tyhornback is only useful when fighting dreadnoughts, for the No Retreat rule. otherwise it is a waste of points

WTF?! I have to buy the wings for my Tyrant seperately?!

It sure would be fun to destroy a Ctan without ever having your fexs get into btb with it.

Ctan is killing a few spinegaunts a turn and taking 3 no retreat saves after each lose combat!

Would definately make its points back in this function!

Heck you could use it against enemy badass enemy though the Ctans are the best as they cost alot AND have a bad save!

Ideal use for Thornback...

Then again Devilfexs shoot up Ctans so easily you don't really need a spesial tactic for killing them.

If your smart and know how to use it then fitting a few fexs with the upgrade could be worthwhile and alot of fun, however most games will not give you a good target to use the tactic against.

The dreadnought/ctan have to actually LOSE combat first, before 'No Retreat!' kicks in. If the ctan is only in btb with spinegaunts, it won't be losing combat - S3 can't hurt T8.

No retreat shouldn't even be an issue with a fex fighting a dreadnought.. the fex hits on 3+, and has 9+2D6 armor penetration.. very likely to hit both times and penetrate with both. Chances are t he dread will be dead, thus no treat won't even enter the matter.

*this post assumes the carnifex is equipped for close combat, and thus has +1 WS and toxic miasma, hence hitting on 3+. Also assumes only base number of attacks. Additional attacks from scytals or crushing claws will further help ensure the dreadnought's destruction.

Um Vsurma did you ever read the rule book?

With a comment like that I'm imaging you didn't. The spine gaunts have to WIN IN THE ASSAULT to cause the C'tan some wounds, and thats ONLY if you outnumber him x to 1.
To cause the 3 wounds you want, you'd have to:
A) Outnumber the C'tan 4 to 1. That's atleast 40 spinegaunts to 1 C'tan since he's a monsterous creature.
B) Win the assault. Since you can't hurt the C'tan at all I don't know how your going to do it unless you're part of a bigger melee, which inturn would mean you'd have to outnumber those new units as well.

Since we are talking about Thornbacked Carnifexs you think they might fit into the equation somewhere???? maybe.

2 thornback fexs assualt necron warriors, spines attack both Ctan and warriors.
Make sure you kill more warriors than the Ctan can kill gaunts...

Won combat.

Fexs count as 40 models, gaunts count as more, most necron warriors likely dead.
Thus 3/1 outnumbering and the Ctan takes those 3 saves.

It can do nothing as the spinegaunts pile in on it and the warriors again (better to charge 2 warrior squads if possible)

Round 2, ctan still only in btb with gaunts, fexs still fighting warriors, chances are you win again
Luckily necrons have ld10 so the warriors are not too likely to run though if you get the squad down to less than hald strength then the ld mods they take will make them run.

It's not easy but it can be donw.

Feel free to use your imagination and not just assume the worste.

Thornback is a rather 'situational' upgrade - one which can work if certain things go according to plan, but they often won't.

One of those potential problems is that a carnifex will never get into assault unless your opponent allows it to...

I think Thorned back is a waste on a CC fex. First you don't want the enemy to break when you taking the fex into them. You want them to make the test and keep you from getting shot the next turn, and your going to need them to crowd around you to make use of that Mace Tail.

I'd recommend you consider it on a Shooty fex if you wanted it. That would allow you to make some charges, with the hope the enemy will break, allowing you to keep shooting.
