I used to play, but stopped to play fantasy for a few years, but 8th edition has sapped my will to play that, so I'm considering going back to 40k.

I have piles of marines and guard, some eldar, sisters, necrons and chaos. What should I play? How do things work now? What's hot and what's not?

Well, most of your models are most likely still relative...so thats a plus. Whats hot right now? Basically any of the army's that have recently recieved a Codex (rules) update (Blood Angels, Dark Eldar, Grey Knights). Of course the Guard are always a fan favorite.

Welcome to the Dak!

4250 points of Blood Angels goodness, sweet and silky W12-L6-D4
1000 points of Teil-Shan (my own scheme) Eldar Craftworld in progress
800 points of unassembled Urban themed Imperial Guard
650 points of my do-it-yourself Tempest Guard
675 points of Commoraghs finest!

Welcome to dakka, If my vote counts (you should do a poll) I suggest Guard!

Well if I remember how you used to play marines, you should fit right in! People are real big on min/maxing and taking multiple units these days, you just have to label it as "competitive" and most will leave you alone.

It's not as much fun though, I seem to recall some very fun to read arguments about taking 5 man squads with lascannons and such.

Thanks,

Welcome back Mauleed.

I'm rapidly approaching a return to 40k too, as soon as I get HEs out of the way for next years WHFB tourney season.
