hey all! I am getting into historical war-gaming 10mm, as it seemed that with 10mm, one can achieve truly massive armies at a budget. anyway, for WW2, I know the best rulebook to use would be FOW, but ww2 is not the era that I am most excited about on this scale. so for massive historical medieval and ancient battles, what is the best rule-set? also, what do you think the best quality VS cost 10mm manufacturer is that is available in the USA?

Imo, Warmaster Ancients is an excellent rules set for 10mm massed historicals. Now, before the H-core historical gamers flame me, I haven't played around with other 10mm rules, but I just felt that Warmaster Ancients did a fantastic job of it.

For minis, Old Glory is your best bet for cost. Quality with them is hit and miss sometimes, but for the most part, they're quite nice. For 50 figs in 10mm, you're shelling out from 10 bucks, from their website. Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with.

Welcome to dakka, and welcome to historical gaming. How you enjoy your stay on both counts

thanks for the advice. so old glory looks good, but almost none of their 10mm units have a pic of the figures, so I haven't an idea how they look like (I mean, I know that their can only be so much detail, I would just like to see how they look before I spend money on em). I have heard good things about pendraken, so I may buy a few of both, so are they compatible? also, field of glory sounds interesting, but warmaster ancients looks great.

Field of Glory is worth checking out for sure, they have quite a few different resources for different periods. Impetus also looks like it could be an interesting choice, and I believe the Impetus "Basic" rules area available for free.

FOW = Best WW2 rules.

Oh dear... How wrong can a man be... Try Blitzkreig Commander for starters.

For rules, look no further than Blackpowder and Hail Caeser written by Rick Priestly and available from Warlord Games.

........I said large scale 10mm battles, not 28-30mm gladiator fights.

I take it you dont know the new Hail Caeser rules from WG then?

For any scale and for huge battles. Based on Blackpowder.

But if thats your attitude, you can find your own.

really, really sorry man, you took time to give me advice and I treated you badly, I was rude. I looked up Hail Caesar on board game geek and it came up with this[http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/21708/hail-caesar/url], but now that I have looked up warlord games, Its obvious I was mistaken. according to the site, Hail Caesar looks mega awesome, but it says it has not been released yet. again, very sorry, I did not mean disrespect.

No worries... Im short of sleep! New baby arrived over the weekend!

Hail Caeser looks well worth getting into.

Im getting it as we play lots of Blackpowder for AWI, ACW and Naps.

This way we will have two sets with similar mechanics for the club.

They are also due to release various supplements for the rules - ECW and Naps are first.

Congrats man! yeah, the combat/gameplay sytem looks awesome, though I am a bit worried about the whole "no point sytem" and all that, buy I am sure it will be fine.

Well I never use points... More fun that way!

After all, real war has no points...
