There is a guy at the FLGS who likes to use Dark Angels and treat his army with the new rules for wargear, like Storm Shields. Cool.

Then, one day, he starts countering peoples spells with his librarian's old dex rangeless psychic hood from across the board. I wanted to say "sure, but a successful counter at this range will revert your storm shields back to 4+ and render them useless against shooting," but I like to think I'm a nice guy and I wasn't 100% on the DA faq.

The faq states the player should use the old codex, but can ask to use things with the newer version not found in their book. In all fairness, considering it's consent of the player to even use the new rules, I'd expect the Dark Angels player to use all of the new equipment versions, for better and worse, rather than gain some additional advantage by pick and choose.

What would you expect? What have you seen in tournaments?

New FAQ Here; says they do get the new Storm Shields; and it does not change the Psychic Hood, so he is fine and Legit.

P.S. the New gear rules are under "amendments"

That's how the Dark Angels play. The equipment has been amended in the latest FAQ. The Psychic Hood hasn't been changed.

Willy: I was surprised i did not get ninja'd while doing the same thing. Luckily I had my response typed and only had to double check the FAQ to ensure I remembered it correctly..

The only old wargear I could think of that DA would want to use is the old smoke launchers (All pens are downgraded to glances), but if the player wants to play with those rules, then his cyclones are one shot, and SSs are 4+ cc invuls... you cannot pick and choose.

I'm a slow typer, I'm surprised your the only one who did. Plus, being at work I had to actually go to GW site to double check the FAQ. I fell ya!

It's not a case of pick and choose, it's a case of play by the rules in your codex (and FAQ) and the main rulebook.
DA codex, page 55, smoke downgrades all penetrating hits to glancing.
Main rules, page 62, if a codex has it's own smoke rules, they take precedence over the main rules.
Finally, check the FAQ, and nope, smoke launchers did not receive an errata.
So by the rules, you hypothetical DA player MUST play by the old smoke rules, he doesn't have a choice. Using the new smoke rules would be cheating. For the other items, the FAQ has upgraded those, so his cyclones are 2 shots, his SS are 3+ invuls, etc etc.

pssst...DA FAQ page 2, paragraph 8 left hand column...

"Page 55 – Smoke Launchers
Change to “SMOKE LAUNCHERS... See the Vehicles section of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook for details."

Well darn, I even looked at the FAQ and still missed it. In that case, yep, no old rules for them.
Ahhh, I see what I did, I looked at the errata, checked the page 55 entry for searchlights and didn't scroll down to the amendments.

It happens, I would have never found it if I hadn't ctrl-f'ed (that's f for find!) for 'smoke'

They get the better psychic hoods because they're emo kids.
Their hoodies have to be the darkest and best.

Nahh, still not as good as a WH Inq Lord. IIRC, DA Librarians are only LD 9, except for one special character
