It's hardly a throwaway game. AI was, in addition to being the best game GW has ever produced, a full game with high quality rulebooks (including extensive fluff sections every 8th edition codex would be jealous of), an entire model range for several factions, and even an expansion book with additional scenarios and a narrative campaign. It didn't sell well because it had the bad fortune to be released at the end of GW's complete mismanagement of the specialist games line, but it was absolutely a complete game on the level of Epic/AT/Kill Team/etc. Don't confuse it with the throwaway box set games that GW writes in 15 minutes to go with the exact models in the box and then never mentions again.

It also used the "pre-plotted movement template" mechanic that Wings of War introduced before X-Wing did (at a roughly similar price, too), although Wizkid's Crimson Skies 2nd edition had a more fiddly variant. The only downside was that the Eldar planes were excessively fiddly to build. they even sold the bases separately so that all the cheapskates (like me) with the relatively crappy metal Epic models could use them instead.

Only contrast paints in June, Warcry in July. Nothing more specific than that as far as I know.

Forbidden Powers - pre order next week, general sale week after
Contrast Paints - June
Warcry - July
Sylvanath - when it gets off the container

Otherwise I didn't pay attention to many other dates, but the AT and Necromunda I think is all "next and when it comes" so could be any time.

So the shipping issue is just Sylvaneth? Or is there a knock-on effect?

I read from someone that they said it was just Sylvanath that was affected. Which would make sense as I'd wager a major embargo or breakdown of trade with China would have hit the news and a lot more companies. It sounds like one container/shipment that has likely got caught up in customs or somesuch and way beyond normal. It might even be something as simple as it going through a stricter inspection than normal; or someone filed some paperwork wrongly (which might have nothing to do with GW's order).

Though it might have had knock ons we can't see, egthe tome after Sylvanath or other content we don't know of might also be in the same container shipment. I don't think anything shown at Warhammer Fest is under threat.

I can't be the only one who thinks this whole event was a bit of a bust on the studio preview side.

I mean, a FW seminar where they showed off 4 new Dark Angel minis and some mini-Knights we've already seen.

An AoS preview where they one new warband for Warcry and told us about some books we knew were coming.

A specialist games preview where they showed us the Halfling stuff we had already seen, some concept stuff for Wood Elves, Adeptus Titanicus stuff we mostly knew about (other than the card/dash expansions and the terrain), and Necromunda stuff we've already seen (other than Enforcers, which they didn't show).

A 40k preview that shows Apoc is just rules/tokens/dice and movement trays, another terrible looking Primaris tank, the AdMech Transport/Skimmer and Chaos Knights (honestly the most new stuff seen) and a painted version of a SoB we'd already seen.

Only the Contrast stuff was of any real excitement level, and we've got a legion of people here decrying that stuff already.

The worst thing imho were the previews of previews. Like just show us some stuff. The Necromunda teaser was ridiculous.

I think part of it is the diversification of game lines. Odds are pretty good that any individual person won't care about multiple product lines, and the time between major releases (like gloomspite) is increasing with extra padding and hollow releases (like skaven and strigoi). The current obsessive emphasis on faction specific spells and terrain doesn't help either, as they are so specific, if you don't play that army, there is no reason to care. And even if you do play the army, you still might not.

And then odds are pretty good, that if an army does get done, the only new models will be a handful of overpriced characters that you have no reason to have multiples of.

Meanwhile, a lot of army lines that people do care about continue to rot.
I was impressed by the beginning of the year by AoS and somewhat by 40k, and pleased to see the keeper, but the rest of the front half of 2019 has been yawn-worthy.

I'm waiting to see more of Warcry, but as you say, I want to see it, not be teased by the possibility of seeing pieces of it.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

The problem is the number of previews GW are doing now. Warhammer fest was gw's 8th preview event this year and they already have another lined up for the end of the month.
When GW first started doing previews again they had about 5 events spread out over the whole year. Each year they have added more. Then you have a few complications thrown in. The Slyvaneth battletome was clearly intended to be part of the aos prevention, but leaks and delays messed with that plan.
Then you have contrast which GW intended to be their big thing at the event. It is the first time I have ever seen a GW video trend on YouTube so it must be quite a big deal for a lot of people.
I think if they had taken the news from new York toy fair, Australia and the upcoming event and put it all into the warhammer fest event, we would be having a very different discussion.

Can anyone confirm for me whether or not Battlefleet Heresy got mentioned at all in any of the seminars. I have heard (from a not terribly reliable source) that they said it was being scrapped as they didn't have the time or resource for it and would be focusing on Titanicus instead. Wheeras I love AT and am always happy to hear it's getting support, I'd be gutted if there was no more prospect of Battlefleet on the horizon.

But, importantly, is in the pipeline. Just not any time soon.

Something about it being such a big project it will soak up most of the Specialist Games resources, so they want to stabilise the other lines first. Whilst this is annoying, because I want my star ships, at least that means they are probably planning to devote adequate resources to BFG. Hopefully, it will be a really fleshed out game again with loads of variety.

In the specialist games preview seminar, they said that they think to do BFG properly they’d either need to not do anything for Necromunda, Blood Bowl and Adeptus Titanicus for a year, or hire a new team for it. But it’s something they definitely want to do.

In terms of specialist games, something like this should be considered. There is no reason they need to constantly flood these games with releases. Necromunda is a great example. Once the enforcers/arbites are out, they could take a break in terms of models (maybe release campaign supplements) and focus on BFG. How many AT titans do we actually need?

New releases are generally desirable to keeping a game 'current', but it doesn't take that many releases to make fans feel like they haven't been abandoned. The Necromunda format you'd probably want 2 new gangs a year, but FW releases could easily plug that gap.

More titans than 3 would be nice.

Question is really how much money do they want from necromunda and AT line? No releases will kill sales efficiently. Just look at what happened for FB.

We could start with factions besides Imperial titans vs Imperial titans with spikes.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

WOW. What happened? Only 13 pages? I mean a few years ago, this would have been like 50 or 70+ pages.

Not sure if gaming has gone down hill, or not as many people interested in GW, or people don't go to the forums as much and/or people just don't post as much on Dakka.

I think its because nothing was really revealed besides woodelves for bloodbowl (still waiting on Lizardmen...) and the new warcry team- which is really, really cool, but can only sustain so much conversation by itself.

Even the new admech transport was expected, and there isnt much to talk about rules wise.

I think lots of people are excited for chaos knights. But we already know what to expect. Its not like the stats will be different for chaos knights vs loyalists. Don't think people will be speculating about stuff like the new strategems, warlord traits and such in the new chaos knights codex. (It will probably be worse than the existing loyalist codex anyway).

Same for that Primaris tank. Its stats will be the same, the only difference will be the new gun and how much it will cost.

The skitari transport probably has the most discussion but again, that's one faction out of so many many factions. Only Skitari players would be interested and they are a much smaller segment than the entire playing population as a whole.

Nope. A big, big part of Newcromunda's problem is there is still so much missing. Combined with the absurdly long release schedule for a handful of basic gangs (with lots of missing weapons) and the DLC approach to rules, it was and is a cold mess.
If they really want to do anything with it, they need more.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

The thing is GW has learned that if they "ignore" a game for a long period of time the market for it dwindles. It's pattern they've seen repeated over and over and peaked with the near death of Old World Fantasy.

I think this is why they are drip feeding out game content. For them it a double bonus because drip feeding helps keep interest in the game high over a prolonged period of time; whilst it also allows them the flexibility to adapt to a changing market more readily and to even drop the game if sales plummet whilst leaving the game in a functional state.

Gamers are fickle customers partly because we don't operate quite like many other major product lines. Sure many products still make a big return in the early weeks of release, but at the same time products are only liked to do that if there's significant market interest. Part of that market interest is the gamers perception that the company is taking care of the game itself - ergo that the game has a future that can be measured in years.

This is because a gamer might buy into a game product, but that product might not see actual use for many weeks; whilst armies might take months to years for a gamer to collect. Your average gamer doesn't want to invest into a new side game or even new side army if they can even detect a hint of the game vanishing within a year or half year.

You only have to look at a lot of smaller start up companies where the ycan have a hard time retaining customers when their product lines are ignored. Spartan Games suffered from this over and over. Despite having strong sales of many of their lines, they also suffered from ignoring many of them for long periods of time (often investing into new side games at the same time); this meant the original market for the game drifted away steadily.

Continual drip feed of product and attention from the parent company fosters a community around a game that maintains it and helps perpetuate continued sales. Excited gamers talk to others and coax them in, whilst those wishing to get invovled see that there's a future in the game.
