Incoming: Storm of Magic

Storm of Magic - when the eight winds howl...

The Winds of Magic are tumultuous. Drawn by Morrslieb, they are prone to rise from a strong gale into a howling tempest. And when they do no kingdom or realm is safe.

Monsters awaken from their slumber and are summoned from their lairs at the bidding of sorcerous masters. Armies assemble, ready to defend their borders or seize the opportunity to gain limitless power. It is in these desperate times tenuous pacts between wizards and creatures of darkness are sealed to create alliances never thought possible.

A time of doom and great deeds is at hand. Will you rise to meet the storm?

Announcing the impending arrival of Storm of Magic, the latest and largest Expansion for Warhammer, the Game of Fantasy Battles. Launched in July 2011, Storm of Magic describes what happens when great eldritch maelstroms roil across the lands. Magic becomes far more powerful and there is a whole range of Cataclysm spells to cast, unleashing untold devastation on the enemy. Arcane Fulcrums burst from the ground, not only acting as loci for the swirling energies that pervade a battle fought amidst the Storm of Magic, but changing the way a Warhammer tabletop looks and interacts with your armies. With such things so crucial to your Storm of Magic games a new range of Warhammer scenery and Wizards will soon be released in time for you to wage cataclysmic battles.

Then there are the monsters. When the Winds of Magic blow with such strength, the fell creatures of the world gravitate towards the tempest, slithering from deep tunnels or emerging from mountain lairs.

With the new Expansion allowing you to use so many different creatures there are a whole host of new monstrous plastic kits on their way. Citadel's queen of creatures, Trish Morrison, has spent the last few years in her own lair preparing for the new monsters to be unleashed upon the world and you can see two brief glimpses of what is to come below:

July is still a few months away; we are in the calm before the storm so now is the time to prepare. Bolster your forces, prepare your regiments and summon your wizards in time for the ultimate war. Keep checking White Dwarf and the website for updates, for when the storm hits nowhere will be safe!

Wow! Dragons, Chimeras, Lammasu maybe? All plastic? That'd be great!!!!

Looks cool, but I guess that put the coffin in the 'summer of flyers' concept for 40K this year?

Maybe they'll speed things up, and set up one event per game system?

Harry at Warseer thinks the two preview pics are a Black Dragon and a Manticore. If so, someone needs to teach Morrison how to sculpt scales, because that dragon looks furry or feathery.

On a sombreo, wearing a deckchair.

Sounds awesome.
And Trish knows what she's doing, in which case, i doubt thats a dragon.

Maybe a chimera?

Actually no. This is the official confirmation of this rumour posted in December: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/335097.page
Most people thought from the beginning that it will be magic and monsters.

I still think the other one will come as well as a WD article plus models, just another month (August I guess).

And thank God that Magic in 8th edition "becomes far more powerful" (is that even possible?)
At least we get new monsters.

Magic that is even more powerful. Bad idea. Couple that with monsters, who already suck, and you set yourself up for an expansion that will not sell the new shiny models.

I hope that they put stuff in the expansion to maintain the individual character of each army. These days the Fantasy armies all seem to be going in the same direction, fewer magic items, fewer special rules, lots of big monsters, and everybody plays lots of troops. Variety is the spice of life, and Fantasy ain't got none.

Urk, magic is already overpowered this edition, and too random. We don't really need MORE spells that can remove whole units....

Though, if it's for the apocalypse sized games maybe.

It could also be someting to fix magic in larger games in general. Playing with 10 levels of wizard is no good with 7 magic dice.

Unless everything is going to cost 175-250, most of these monsters are going to be very large targets for these powerful spells. (I hope they wont buff purple sun!)

Imagine what lore of life would do!

I'm happy. At least until the new ogre realease.
Our magic is fun. We can kill ourselves so easily. It's nice.

Foregoing a 40k expansion to do a Fantasy expansion wouldn't make much sense, if they follow current trends they will support both lines equally.

Lets hope they mirror something into the 40k Universe weather it be Flyers or something else!

I fear however you are correct and the trade off will come next year for 40k

I read this as an expansion for Warhammer, much like Apocolypse is for 40k? Am I reading it wrong?

If that is the case, then we can expect big monsters and massive magic boosts, but they would be part of Storm of Magic battles only- not stuff that most people would be using in normal fantasy battles.

Also, I don't think that's a dragon. My guess is that its two heads on a one chimera, or something like that.

I have recently been diagnosed with swelling in the brain, so please excuse spelling mistakes and faulty sentences. I am losing my ability to type and talk effectively, but dammit, that is not going to stop me from trying.

So this is like Storm of Chaos kinda I keep hearing about all the time? I guess that was a campaign & this is some sort of expansion though.

p.s. Dwarves, I hope you don't feel too left out.

I thought that the monsters would get an expansion they are fast becoming the fantasy version of 40k's tanks and other big vehicles. I hope Beastmen get some of their big beasties during this event. I expect to see some of the basic stuff from the big red books get released. It wold be interesting to see a plastic 'Warhammer' dragon as in the serpentine creatures of old, but then it'd also be cool to see a completely revamped style of dragon moire akin to the Caledor and Aenarion covers. Also I thought Trish was Trish Carden not Morrison, either way I will be happy to see some more of her work as she isn't afraid to do something different even if it makes some people cry (this is a game of chaos mutations not strict order). Warhammer's strength is in being different to 'standard' fantasy imagery and this will become even more important as The Hobbit and Smaug turn up in a couple of year's time.

So... how much of this will apply to armies like Skaven and Orcs n Goblins? We already have models for our monsters, and we have our own lores of magic...

I think this event is to tide over everyone else going up against Skaven, Greenskins and Tomb Kings.

What it looks like is the dragon in the Harry Potter film, more like an ugly bird than a flying lizard, though I don't think it actually is a dragon, and if it's even something dragonish it looks closer to a wyvern

The other one looks interesting, it reminds me of an old vampire counts model

@Bloodwin, Ghorgon and Cygor will hopefully get models
