Been hearing quite a lot at TMP about this new ancient-medieval ruleset. Does anyone know exactly how it plays out?

Sorry to bump my own thread but I did some digging around and it seems that many people regard CoE as a "what could have been" on Warhammer ancient battles. Interesting for those who may be dissatisfied with WAB2.0 and the lack of support it receives but I'm just going on by word of mouth, havent seen the rules myself

Just got Hail Caeser so I will be sticking with that... Superb set of rules.

Got me excited about playing ancients which is no mean feat in itself!

I just played Hail Caesar the other night, and it was interesting. It definately felt like warmaster with 28mm models, although there were few cases of units flying around the board.

I'd be interested in more info about Clash of Empires. I did see that they had a batrep on their website, but no actual discussion of the mechanics of what was happening rules-wise, so I couldn't really tell if it was something I'd be interested in.

I have several WAB armies, and have played WAB2.0 and enjoyed that as well. Just because FW isn't doing anything with it, doesn't mean the game still can't be played (all the supplements works, etc.). I know, I'm being obvious here.

Maybe its a case of being used to GW-style games with army lists and special rules, and maybe I just need to get over it, but Hail Caesar (and Black Powder) feel 'generic' to me. And that could be their intent, since they're focused on getting lots of models on the table and don't really fuss about army lists and points values.

Ah yea I rememeber some people mentioning about HC being quite like Warmaster, in a good way I think

Yup. Rick Priestley worked on warmaster. I think Hail Caesar is a pretty solid game if you want a 'relaxed' type game over beers. Clash of Empires has been described as "what WAB2 should have been" and draws very heavily from it while adding in some new wrinkles, iirc around morale, units sizes, the way generals interact with units, etc. A little more complex, but basically WAB, to be supported with lists online and a couple books. CoE is aiming for the 'balanced, competitive, tournament capable" type of game (as a contrast to Hail Caesar).

The WAB forum, www.wabforum.co.uk added a whole Clash of Empires section, and there are several threads about batreps and discussion about how the game works.

It definately looks to be jumping into WAB2's still warm chair.
