Should Grey Knights be painted Grey?

I was thinking of Painting mine with a Basecoat of Adeptus Battlegrey upto 2nd coat of Codex Grey and Highlight of Fortress Grey, anyone else done this? Or have you all just stuck with Boltgun Metal?

Most of the old ones were grey so why not.

Poor orks... Why can't they be the good guys for once?

Add a nice sharp highlight to edges etc and it should be a winner. It would be nice to see GK's that haven't just been sprayed with Boltgun metal and plonked on a gaming table.

Hmm! The thing with it being grey, is that it could just look like primer, if i can get the shadows and highlights right it could be ok, i guess if you dont try it, you will never know.

Yeah, flat grey looks a bit too similar to all those zillion unpainted armies out there But highlighted and shaded properly, grey can look great. I too am not a fan of silver GKs, I'd rather use silver as a highlight/spot colour.

My Blog has them at fortress grey, mainly because when I started there was no black/blue wash so the models looked far to pretty. Not saying they don't look to pretty now.

Grey Knights were never Grey. Not officially, anyway.

Since 3rd edition, they've been silver. Before that, they were mainly silver, but also incorporated other metallics (mostly gold), with each unit supposedly having their own personal heraldry. The Studio models were silver with gold trim.

Having said that, grey would be a perfectly acceptable interpretation on them, in a sort of reverse of the logic that took Ultramarines 3rd Company marines from yellow to gold trim...

Mine are grey with a gloss varnish over the armour to give that highly polished, but unpainted, look.

Now, I was informed that the Third Company repainted their yellow in gold to commemorate (or as a reward/honourable merit thingy) Captain Cato Sicarius taking over and that heraldry and colours do sometimes change...

Your top image isn't a studio model. The fact that someone, somewhere painted them grey doesn't mean that 'most of the old ones were grey'...

The bottom image is silver with gold trim.

Not sure about the Sicarius bit... They've reinterpreted all of the Ultramarines company colours into metallics for the current codex.

If you're referencing the latest BL audio novels----I'm guessing until Garro is finished rounding up Malcador's list----and they become official---they're not bearing insignia. I'm willing to bet once he 'gives them a purpose', they'll decide on silver---to reflect their untarnished souls or some other metaphorical nonsense.

It's hard to tell when looking at just the Grey Knights IA artwork, but their color doesn't match the black effect in the IA artwork for other Chapters we know to be black (the highlight is whiter for the Deathwatch, Black Templars, etc.). As far as I can tell, it's suppose to be a dark grey that falls somewhere between black and the Word Bearer's slate grey.

Which STILL isn't Silver like Insaniak stated.

That said, it's close enough to justify my GKs being black(I used that scheme for mine as soon as the DH Metals were released).

The Codecii as far back as 2nd Ed., and up to and including 5th Ed. show 2nd Company with yellow/gold trim, and 3rd Company as red. Just thought I'd put that out for clarification.

Cheers.

And for more silly confusion, First Company (Veteran) can use either White or Silver.

The difference between commitment and involvement is like eggs and ham; the ckicken was "involved", the pig was "comitted".
