Can anyone recommend a good (and if possible, reasonably priced) source for skulls--just skulls, by themselves--in the right scale for 40k? My orks have a lot of skulls hanging off them, but I think they would look better with more skulls.

Hmm, that's a good idea...expensive as green stuff is, skulls are so tiny that that's bound to be the cheapest option.

Well, the only thing that comes to me would be asking some Vampire Counts or Tomb Kings players. They are bound to have a lot of spare skulls in their bits boxes. Other than that, molding is your best bet. I suppose Oyumaru would work really well for such things, since I've yet to try it out though, I wouldn't vouch for it.

Wow, even better. They have some other nice-looking bone pieces too. Thanks everybody! I will try to suck less at the internet and find these things myself in the future.

This poster is on the money. That group does great work at a fair price. I've had good luck with their stuff.

Well you could try a cemetery, or the Catacombs of Paris, although those would not be scale for 40K.

I'd go for some instantMold as you can re-use it when you're done and some easyFlow60 plastic, you'll be belting them out in batches of 50 'dead' easy

I ended up ordering the secret weapons skull bag (plus a pack of skeleton bits, just for around the house) last night--will post pics/thoughts when they arrive. Thanks again for all the help, everybody!

The skulls arrived today, and I'm happy with them. There's a fair amount of flash and mold lines, but it only takes a minute to clean one up and the sculpting is really nice. I hastily painted one to check out the details. Some pictures:

The bag. Looks like there are about 130-150 skulls.

A closer look. Lots of flash evident.

Two of the skull types that come in the bag. Not sure how many total, but there are at least three distinct ones (perfect skull, front teeth gone, side of head knocked in).

Picked this one for a test paint. This is before cleaning it up.

After a quick paint job. This was pretty rushed and rough and might not do the sculpting justice.

Anyway, overall this was a good value and some really nice skulls. Just in time for mother's day! I'll be checking out Secret Weapons again.

You can never have too many skulls! awesome link I might pay them a visit myself.

Three more notes:

1) I counted them, and there were 151 skulls in the bag, making them a tiny tiny bit less than 10 cents US per skull. Outstanding value.
2) While they're a bit larger than some of the skulls I'm seeing attached to GW models, they actually look like perfect scale for GW humans. Hold one next to a human-head GW model, and it looks like just the right size to be inside that human head.
3) Having 150 skulls makes you really not worry about screwing them up or wasting them. It's going to be nice to be able to just throw a skull or two onto a base or whatever on a whim without thinking too much about it.

I am glad this thread was posted. I have been wanting to make a tower of skulls apocalypse unit and secret weapon miniatures looks like the best place to get the skulls!
