A Chaotic (both in subject and organisation) thread about the new Nurgle Army I'm tirelessly working on amid University exams.

I'm aiming for a 1500 point list and I'm pretty confident I'll at least get everything assembled. At any rate, below is first an original post about a Rhino I was working on and then the rest of the stuff shall be added as it is done. I intend to record most steps of what I do

I'm merging a couple of posts here... the first below is a post I made about my Nurgle Rhino (which I will still update) but I have also added other stuff to do with my Nurgle army)

Hi guys!

Here below, as I believe pictures speak more than words ever could, is a plan I wrote with great attention toward creating the perfect pair of Nurgle Rhinos:

Atm I am working on the set of images to the left, I'm converting the interior so it will revolve around a marine who was unfortunate enough to deliver such a passionate speech regarding Nurgle that he was honoured with ascension... to err... being fused to the Rhino wall. Unfortunately my marine boxset has yet to arrive so I don't have an unfortunate torso to stick to said wall *sadface*. Once I get one and get the other wall built up, I can have fun not only painting it but also filling the floor up with a PVA/paint mix to resemble ooze... I'm hoping to also add ooze 'weeping' out of all the holes of the exterior.

But there is no need to despair for I have worked what magic I can with the floor and other wall!

I'll post updates as I work on this, but I can't do any more until a lazy ebay seller posts me these damn Marines and I can finish assembling the Rhino.

I also left my Space Marines at home so I can't go for the main 'crowning glory' of the Rhino which will be a Space Wolf being swallowed on the front, though that may go on the Rhino which I've detailed on the right, which will be a lot more mutated (with tentacley goodness)

-------------------------------------------------

Nurgle Bike & CSM

First up here's the bike... as the squad will have the Mark of Nurgle I tried to 'Nurgle it up' a bit... I scraped off the Chaos Undivided symbol and fashioned some crude growths by chopping up a small 'roll' of greenstuff into little spheres which I then simply squished against the bike so they became circles and pushed some holes in them with the end of a broken hobby drill blade. I made the 'growths' by simply following GW's guide on 'Modelling and Painting Chaos Details'. It's pretty darn easy, just press some green stuff on the model and scrape some lines into it, then follow up by poking it with holes.

The same kind of stuff was done for the rider (sorry for the blurry pics):

You guys may have noticed that the head isn't sporting its original top-knot... I consider top knots to be the fashion accessories of the Black Legion and I'mma Death Guard here! I've also excluded horned heads from my army; only my aspiring champions will be permitted to sport horns and, in their case, they shall be chipped and weathered. I'm pretty much hoping to just have CSM that look like the ones out of DoW II.

My CSM troops are also marked apart by the fact that I am literally taking WYSIWYG too far with them: All of them are carrying close combat weapons and bolters, for extra 'badass' factor (and to distinguish them from my Marines.... I don't want to just model/paint those all over again). I have assembled a whole squad but I only had time to take pictures of one model, which is a magnetised special weapons specialist:

Aside from the modifications I've already mentioned, there are a few more prominent ones on my CSM. Firstly, you can see that I drilled in bullet holes (again, following the advice in the GW guide I mentioned earlier) and notched on some scars around them with a hobby knife. To achieve the bolter/plasma gun badassery I either used bolt pistol arms (lopped off the pistol) or cut up other CSM arm types... Space Marines in general are very easy to manipulate as their arms come in 'sections' that can be cut off, rotated, re-posed and so on.

Here is a closer look at the magnet, if anyone is interested:

I cannot paint these guys until BitzBox deliver me some 25mm bases, as the eBay seller I bought these guys from failed to mention that he wasn't including bases *groan*. But I will be painting one of the models that I was able to mount a spare base on as a test piece, do keep a look out for that

At any rate, do pay attention to further updates... I'll be working on Plague Marines (who will be in Death Guard colours, rather than the bleached bone that will characterise the others) after these guys and, of course, my Rhino still needs more sculpting done (but after around seven hours of drilling, green stuffing, glueing, clipping and filing, I am rather sick of the building side).

Well it was very much trial and error but I went about painting up my first mini for this army (after my Sorceror) a couple days ago, it's taken me bloomin' ages but I've got pics of it going step by step...

I've pretty much altogether abandoned my old painting style. This model features no edge highlighting and no lighting... the colours are entirely flat and only accentuated by drybrushing and washes. I'd like to think it looks more Nurgley thataway (Papa Nurgle disapproves of highlights and colour!) but if you disagree do say so. I also wonder if the stains from the washes make it look a bit too cracked and, hell, lazy. Although this was time-consuming to paint, I think that was just from it being a pioneering escapade rather than any real difficulty and I guess this might be a 'nooby' approach to painting. At any rate, at least it's easy eh?

I was also a little bothered when I realised that my scrubs are basically going to be in the same colours as pre-heresy Death Guard... albeit without having had a bath in a while.

Anyway here's the guide:

It's not exactly finished and I do leave out so obvious details (like cleaning up the paint that spattered on the ammo pouch) but the pics and my brief words combined should pretty much indicate how I got the model the way it is

First I applied a Chaos Black undercoat and then a Bubonic Brown basecoat:

I then went in with a heft Devlan Mud wash:

Desert Yellow was then applied, leaving the washed recesses alone:

Dark Angels Green was added, metallic parts painted Scorched Brown. Fleshy parts painted Tallarn Flesh:

Bleached Bone was applied to the armour:

The skulls were painted with Dark Flesh, Construction chequer added to chainsword with Bubonic Brown. Watered-down Boltgun Metal over all the metal parts. Face painted with Dheneb Stone.:

I then reached the point of washes galore. Watered down Chaos Black was applied, then Scorched Brown, then Bubonic Brown and finally Camo Green. Face washed with a 50/50 mix of Ogryn Flesh and Elf Flesh:

Skulls have Desert Yellow applied and then a 50/50 mix of desert yellow and bleached bone over the top of that. The fleshy growths have a mix of Elf Flesh and Dheneb Stone drybrushed over the top. The little daemon on the bolter also got a nice drybrushing of Camo Green and the ammo the same with Shining Gold:

A candle was then lit and a quick prayer to Nurgle uttered before the model was dipped in bacon grease and left in a toilet cistern for seven days and seven nights.

The mini was then done!

Oh and at some point I painted the eyes skull white (no pupils = Chaosy) and the strap on the ammo pouch Scorched Brown.

Great colour scheme as the other guys said - nice to see someone trying something a little different with Nurgle. My only suggestion is that you merge the nurgle symbols on the sides of the bike a little more into the bike (like you did on the front), to get a more consistent look.

Keep it coming!

Thanks guys, it certainly feels good to have left the lies of the false Emperor and his lapdogs behind...

I've been working on painting up half of the CSMs (will post pics as soon as they're done) and I'm painting the Rhino's interior (along with the dead marine I planned to put inside ;&gt

I've slightly amended the colourscheme though, I'm going to use Camo Green instead of Dark Angels green after I noticed that one of the models that inadvertently developed a light green trim somehow looked a whole lot more diseased.

After the Rhino/Squad are done I'll get working on the bikes... might go for the hairspray rust method

As for merging the Nurgle symbols... Perhaps, the reason it's there is because it's covering up the filing scar from removing the Chaos Undivided symbols; I'm planning on having different stuff over that spot depending on the bike (fleshy growths, pustules, bullet-ridden hulls, etc.) I may look at doing a more 'organic' nurgley symbol on one of them. The champion's bike I am hoping to have horns sprouting out of and I plan to add a surfing Nurgling (if my sculpting skills prove good enough ).

Unfortunately the only picture I can contribute with this post is a poorly-drawn score of doodles I came up with on one of my bookmarks whilst 'revising'... Including possible poses for a surfing Nurgling as well as an idea for a base conversion (the three nurglings carrying a bolter away...) I'm hoping to just do a real simplistic three-part green stuff construct by just shaping a blob and sticking it onto some feet and then adding some arms running along bits of paper clip:

When I get around to trying to make one I will photograph the process of course Even if it fails horridly...

Any tips on how to get that would be really appreciated lol, my attempts to get rotting flesh on the sorcerer went awfully...

I gathered I should just use as much bleached bone as possible and have a lack of colour? All I've not tried is building up from greys.

Here's the flesh abortion that was the sorcerer:

Methinks it might've been a mistake to use my HQ unit as my first experimental paintjob (I got him a month or two ago before I decided to do this project... for fun mostly).

I don't know!

Have you tried using ra dark pallet using rottin flesh, bleached bone, and tallen fleash with some black in hope that helps?

Green stuff..Arrrr...I rubbish at sculpting with it but, have you thought of using water and smoothing it onto the surface. Or when your mixing t get it really hot in your palms them smooth it on quickly...O use a burner of some sort. Or that will either burn it or make it liquid green stuff and that would be hard to work with. Or Ill shut up!!!

I don't have rotting flesh.. but I'll look up what that colour looks like and see if I can't make a substitute for my Plague Marines.

What do you mean to achieve with smoothing green stuff onto a surface? A better way of doing the fleshy pustules?

To make it look like its natural cling on to the metal or to make look like its comeing out of the metal (That looks hopefully better!) somtheit on the either sculpt jaded metal or add plasti card.

As the squad is taking a helluva lot longer than I had anticipated (time constraints) I'm posting up pics of the Rhino interior (now fully modelled) awaiting its paintjob.

You can see I'm a total noob with Green stuff as the 'pustules' I attempted came out... well... rubbish. But hopefully paint can cover that up well enough. It does just look like a glob that I put over a CSM torso: Which is what it is. Nevertheless, I hope it still does the job of at least looking interesting:

There some pretty neat ideas you have - especailly love the marine stuck to the inside.

My one critiscism for your Marine you did was that in the end the piant looked a smidgen thick - probably because of all the layers. I reckon that the same affect would be achieved with apply the bleached bone over the Dheneb Stone, and you would still retain the smoother finish of the marines.

nevertheless, awesome stuff!
What are you revising for? I'm revising too.....ahem....

I do wonder just how much is necessary with the marines... Methinks I'll wind up just using a vomit brown basecoat, going over in desert yellow, doing all the washes on that and then going over with the bleached bone mix. Mostly just to save time.

I think the big issue with the example above was that I hadn't decided whether or not to go over him again with the bleached bone mix to cover up the wash stains. In the end I did and the other four I've painted have had the same done (wash on the mix, then reapplying the mix) but it is all a bit of a waste of time perhaps.

I hadn't intended on uploading this but I do feel I should give an example of what they're all looking like now, here's an unfinished Aspiring Champion:

If anything I think my paint coats may be a little bit too thin, there are stains and colour variations all over him but I think that it just makes him look filthy That's the best thing about Nurgle, you can be a lazy painter... You just waste a lot of time waiting for washes to dry lol.

He's still WIP but I spent long enough working on him today that I decided I want praise all the same So I've took a pic of him that showed the mostly finished areas.

Thanks guys, I'd say Nurgle is definitely the easiest army to do basic green stuff for, I'd post up a tutorial but I am afraid that I can't take credit for the majority of the techniques I use... GW can have it.

These are a few links from which I've nicked a lot off stuff:

Two pages from the same GW article which cover, rather nicely, how to Nurgle up your infantry:
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?categoryId=400029&pIndex=15&aId=1200005&multiPageMode=true&start=16
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?categoryId=400029&pIndex=16&aId=1200005&multiPageMode=true&start=17

I'd add to those two ideas by cutting edges off of armour with a hobby knife, cutting off the odd reactor vent on backpacks, maybe snipping a tube or two... Just go wild and attack your model in order to convey a sense of damage

Aaaand this is the guy whose technique I ripped off to model the Rhino below:

My Rhino (WIP):

This is the same Rhino that I took the interior shots of above, I have no idea how long it's going to take me to assemble the second one... this one was only built thanks to beer and inane British television; the resulting evening monotony compelled me to start messing with putty. I feel that not enough Nurgle Rhinos keep the spikes, I guess that people feel trophy Racks are much more Khorne's bag than ours but I feel it is our solemn duty as Chaos players to ensure that no public park in the Imperium retains its iron railings; by putting the safety of children having an afternoon play in jeopardy, we truly do Papa Nurgle's work. It still needs some choppin', drilling and general abuse before it's truly Nurgle though ;P

Oh and Skalk, I'll endeavour to return you the favour and check out your thread too

Also with regards to the colour scheme... I'm finding the claims of originality that people are throwing at it rather flattering; is it so odd to just stain the pre-heresy Death Guard scheme?

a tip: pik a big clean spot on your rihno, if you find one next take a dril to dril out the barrels of guns (boltgunsize) and drill lots and lots of small hole next to each other in random order don't drill them all as deep on a litle deeper and the more you go away from the center of your sopt the less deeper they become.. in the end you will have an awesome corroded effect on your tank, but it takes a lot of time and effort to achieve a nice result.. see what you can do with it.. looking forward
