April 2022 Edit Cleaned up list a bit, removed some dead companies. Checked all links. Removed GW. Added several companies.

I remember when cheap minis were a buck or less. All that's changed now so it's time for a new standard of what constitutes really cheap miniatures.

As a reference for the community please list lines of 28mm Sci-Fi miniatures whose retail price is $3 each (2.30 GBP)and I'll add it to the list. If possible, provide the following info.

Manufacturer
line(s)/Factions
Price
Website/Source where they can be had
Description

Manufacturers in Bold actually sell individual figures for $3 or less. The others further down the list sell boxed sets or packs that average out to $3 or less

Companies with 28mm Sci-Fi figs for 3 bucks or less.

Ramshackle Games
Sci Fi Military and Dwarves, Post Apoc people and creatures and others.
£2 each
https://shop.ramshacklegames.co.uk/
Interesting selection of mostly resin figures in a chunky old school, somewhat crude style. Also ALOT of vehicles and vehicle parts and a higher quality (and higher priced) ork line. Technically individual figures are £4 but nearly all can be pick-and-mixed...
https://shop.ramshacklegames.co.uk/index.php?id_category=47&controller=category
..5 for £10 or 10 for £18.

Reaper Miniatures.
Bones Chronoscope
$2.99
www.reapermini.com
About 50 or so Bones (PVC) figures available for $2.99 and others for just a bit more (or less from other sellers). 28-34mm. Varied Sci-Fi, Pulp and Fantasy subjects.

Two Idiots Pringting Service.
Naismity "Overrunners", Big Mr Tong Miniatures.
$2.50-2.75
https://two-idiots-printing-service.myshopify.com/
I've not personally ordered any, but they print miniatures from an impressive portfolio of modernn Sci-Fi designs. Alot of GW-style stuff as well. 10mm items, scenery and slightly more expensive larger miniatures also l.

Recreational Conflict
Lines; Their Lead Bones line and several others are available individually. Modern Police, Pilots, Zombies, Pulp Sci-Fi, western, historical, etc.
Price $1.80-3.25.
Website http://www.recreationalconflict.com/
A fairly wide variety of figures. Scale varies depending on range from true-28, to Heroic 32. They also sell individual plastic sprues from Stargrave and other plastic boxed kits. That tends to average closer to 1-2 dollars per figure. Lots of small packs of metal figures bringing the price under $2 a piece.

Black Cat Bases.
Wide range of Sci-Fi miniatures from several lines and sculptors especially Moonfleet miniatures
Price Lots of £2 figures.
https://blackcatbases.com/
Mostly cool old-school style. Also, Fantasy, Pulp bases, heads, accessories, etc.

Manufacturer: Denizen
Lines: Denizen Sci-Fi (Ventaurans, Khiff, Federation, Federation mid-tech troopers)
Price: £1.45 each.
Website: http://www.denizenminiatures.co.uk/
Description: Just barely 28mm to the eye, these figs are realistically proportioned and though labeled 25mm, are more accurately true 28's. Really fine 20 year old sculpts that still hold up today. Notable are the Ventaurans which are humanoid (could be human) figs in armor. Also, the "Mid-Tech" Troopers are pretty clear colonial marines from aliens. Be aware, figs from the lines not mentioned above may or may not be 28mm. Check the comparison pics closely. Some are old school true 25mm figures.

Manufacturer:East Riding Miniatures
Lines: Corporate Wars (Slicks, Enforcers, Interpol, Assassins), Weird WW2, Gologo Island (lots of wierdness)
East Riding has Closed shop, but I'm keeping the entry as Crooked Dice has acquired the range, though not put them into production yet. No word on Goglo island and other ranges.

Manufacturer: EM4
Lines: Spacelords (Bunker Breakers, Phagon and Yoyodyne), Grenadier Future Warriors (Troopers, scavengers, cops, gangers, etc, etc) Plastic troopers and gangers.
Price: $0.36-$1 for plastics and $3 metal figs
Website: http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Sci_Fi.html
Description: Selling mostly re-released grenadier and metal magic lines, EM4 has an impressive range of figures. Their metal Troopers in particular, formerly of grenadier, are a very deep line with around 30 sculpts.

Manufacturer: Turnkey Miniatures (most former Mega Miniatures USA)
Lines: Various Fantasy, Modern and Sci-Fi ranges.
Website: http://www.turnkeyminiatures.com/
Description: Many of the lines are rather dated and it shows in the style and size (the pictures don't do them any favors either) but there are some great classic figs in there, especially some of the fantasy figures. At this point it appears to be mostly/entirely made of lines formerly held by Mega MInis.

MSD Games, LLC
Sci-Fi "Kryomek" figures and Pulp/Sci-Fi "Macho women with Guns" figures
Some $3 singles and many packs of 3 for $7.95.
http://msdgames.com/
Kryomek is a line of figures that came out just before 2nd Edition 40k. Very influenced by the Alien franchise and also somewhat by Rogue Trader. The figures are very much of that era. The "Macho Women with guns" line is a goofy line and crude in execution with a few gems scattered throughout. The Kryomek line is also carried by Scotia Grendel in the UK, but prices are a bit over $3 per figure.

Proxie Models
"Steath Troopers"
$8 for 8 figures
http://www.proxiemodels.com/product/stealth-suit-troopers/
A single set of 8 plastic armored figs. Simple chunky detail, but good cheap filler troops.

First Corp Miniatures
Ship's Crew, Aliens, Colonial Marines
£1-1.50
https://1stcorps.co.uk/
Mostly 25mm Old-school troopers sold in packs of 3-18.

Manufacturer: Northstar Miniatures.
Lines: Stargrave
Price: Boxed plastic sets averaging 1gbp per figure.
Website: https://www.northstarfigures.com/
Description: Individual metal figures are available for a higher cost. Northstar also manufactures quite a few plastic fantasy plastic sets that are compatible with the Sci-Fi plastics.

Wargames Atlantic
Death Fields (IG proxies and Space Dwarves), Iron Core (Eisenkern)
Boxed plastic sets averaging $1.40 a figure
https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection
Also Fantasy Plastic sets at a similar price.

Maelstrom's Edge
Various plastic sets for the above mentioned game
Around $2.50 a miniature for 3 core infantry sets.
https://www.maelstromsedge.com/medge/store.jsp
Shiny Sci-Fi figures.

Manufacturer/seller: Prince August Games selling New Old Stock from Target Games
Lines:Various figures from the original Warzone boxed game.
Price:Varried, but lots of packs of 4 miniatures for $10-12
Website: http://www.princeaugust.ie/target_games/tg2420-1.html
Description: The plastic bag-of-figures is long gone, but lots of cool figures still present.

Mantic Games
Firefight/Warpath/Deadzone
Various boxed sets averaging $1.75-2.90 per model
https://www.manticgames.com/games/firefight/
Nearly all Mantic sci fi factions have troop boxes averaging within the price range above.

Okay, let's see.

How does $13 for 35 minis strike you? Lots of Fantasy here. You can now afford to have a small army for each of the major races in 25mm:

Those Caesar figures are pretty cool, but beware, they're not actually 25mm.

They're 1/72, which comes to a rather heroic 21mm and are even dwarfed by old school 25mm metals. However, they match up pretty well with 1/72 scale medieval and ancient figures, which are really cheap (around 50 for 6-9 dollars) and are available in a wide range from many different brands.

My friend keeps tempting me to play Hordes of the Things, and if I do, it will probably be with 1/72 figs.

The eM-4 Future Warriors (ex-Grenadier) were sculpted by Mark Copplestone (who did the original commissars for GW) and still stand up next to his current line of Future War figures at his own company (even though many of his current ones are generally around iteration #3 of the models).

Good value though.

That's a good point. Even though the Copplestone figs are a bit more than 3 bucks a piece, between the two lines of troopers you have one of the most expansive selections of poses for a single Sci-Fi unit type outside of GW space marines or Imperial Guard.

It's a testament to how good the originals were that the newer versions are reworked and expanded, but so similar and compatible. I haven't got any of either troopers, but I have most of the Mark Copplestone Grenadier sculpts for Bikers, Savages and Scavengers.

As to GW...
I was trying to specify figures that could actually be bought for 3 dollars. However, as we've included the Warzone bag of Troopers, I'll add GW as well.

Great price, but at 4-5 bucks a piece, they're not quite bargain basement cheap. I really like the Heresey Gangers which would make a great Delaque Necromunda game

Definitely a good price, but pretty standard price for 15mm stuff

Unfortunately these are not scaled up at all. CTS just refers to all it's 1/72 stuff as 25mm, when it's really 21mm. Kind of frustrating really.

Asside from the EM4 plastic fantasy figs ( http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Copy_of_Fantasy.html )which are available individually and their Sci-Fi which come in packs of 5 packs, both of which come to around 40-70 cents each, I don't know of any others.

Peatreed wrote:em4 minis have some awesomely cool plastic prices! £7 for 50, £2.55 for multiparts, and £2.55 for 12 spaceships (I'm gonna get some - I see a game coming on!)

If you like the EM4 plastics, I defintiely recommend the metal heavy weapon upgrade kit. http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Science_Fiction.html
You may not need all 5 heavy weapons, but it comes with replacement head/torso-front pieces that I think look alot better than the standard torsos.
Here's a squad I built with The HW upgrade torsos, guns taken from Warzone figs, backpacks are IG binoculars, and the leader has a couple of arms from the EM4 command trooper kit.

Not the best paintjobs, but i'm happy with them. I've already acquired 15 more EM4 and 20 of the Shockforce troopers to go with them. Some of the Shockforce troopers are now available through megaminis ( http://freeboardgamesnow.com/sciencefictionfrontierdefenseforce.aspx ) and the style is quite compatible.

I've got the plastics and while not nearly as Chunky, they compare favorably heightwise with GW. I'll try and post up a pic later. I don't have any of the EM4 metals troopers to compare to GW. However, my EM4 Scavengers are a bit smaller than my EM4 plastic troopers.

Here's an EM4 metal fig (painted) next to an EM4 plastic. The figure on the left is a Denizen Mid-Tech Marine, another of the miniatures lines mentioned in the list of cheap 28mm Sci-FI. Without the integral base, it's about the smallest you can get and still be 28mm.

The Em4 plastic is slightly taller than the metal, but not terribly so.

chromedog wrote:The metals stand shoulder to shoulder with mine current plastic IG figures. I have his ex-grenadier "jungle troopers" and they are the same size as his current ones.

This is a bit more thorny. Most reviewers put Mark's Grenadier trooper sculpts (the ones sold by EM4) as ever so slightly smaller than his post Grenadier "Copplestone Castings" brand troopers. Here's a comparison pic.

EM4 painted in the middle and Copplestone officer in the cap to the right. Note that the Copplestone has a bit of an integral base between his boots and the slotta base and is standing straiter whereas to the EM4 fig's Slotta tab brings him level with the base. Still, even taking that into account, the Copplestone figure is a tiny bit larger. However, most folks don't mind the difference and mix them freely in units as the size is quite close and certainly no more different than the size of many GW plastic and metal figs.

In the end, it doesn't matter much. The stylistic difference between EM4/Copplestone Vs EM4 plastics, Vs. GW means that they will likely never be mixed in the same units. Scale-wise, they are all in the 28-30mm (boot sole to eye) range and look fine on the table together.

All pics borrowed from Dawn of the Lead's awesome review of the various Colonial Marine style figures. http://dawnofthelead.com/2011/03/25/colonial-marine-miniatures-a-review/

The whole "Thread Necromancy" thing aggravates me, there are new people looking to start different armies every day so this thread will be relevant to someone until you can't get any mini's at that price point. Unless a subject is truly time sensitive in its relevance to the whole hobby (eg rumours about upcoming new releases) then it should stay open forever.

All Necromunda 10 man squads are approx 3 bucks a model (3.15) if you buy from someone that puts a 25% discount on GW products. Here all the online stores have that discount. Even at full price they're 4.2 $ a model, which isn't bad.

Gretchins + Runtherd (11 miniatures) are 1.64$ a model at full retail price .

We try to take it on a case by case basis, rather than just blanket locking everything old. Sometimes a topic may still be relevant but the specific discussion that was going on a decade ago may not be, so starting a new thread might be preferable.

Also, while we're updating, it would be remiss of me to not mention that most of the Maelstrom's Edge plastics work out at around $2.25 or less per model...

Or (IIRC) about half that if you pick up the Battle for Zycanthus set.

With the mass of cheap plastic sets today, might it be better if I refocused the thread and the OP on figures that can actually be bought separately for $3 each or less.

It's been a decade, but I'm pretty sure that was my original intent anyway.
