Here is the first of the Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons. They will be using the rules for the Grey Knights

This is a Terminator Justicar. I did a lot of Green Stuff work and added Scibor Egyptian Parts and a shoulder pad from Chapterhouse Studios.

This is obviously a work in progress. They will end up being painted red and gold. This time I am going for as clean a paint job as I can. Haven't done that before.

Let me know what you think.

I would suggest replacing both shoulder pads, removing all skulls, aquillas, and -I- from all the models. Different heads would be good too, just to help with distinguishing them from the GK more. Also, nice touch GSing over some of the incriptions.

I actually don't know which ones were Inwuistion symbols so I made some scarabs and covered all I knew.

In the end I kept the scheme of one solder pad from GW and one from Chapterhouse. I liked the overall feel better. I looked at different heads but I actually wanted my opponents to know that these were acting like Grey Knights. I think the paint and water slide transfers should help distinguish them enough.

Daston wrote:Also change the storm bolter to a combi weapon

Not quite sure about this. I am thinking that they did not have Storm Bolters Pre-Heresy? I can't really do this as they need to be WYSIWYG.

Here is an update. I made the rest of the squad. I decided to have the Justicar just have his basic load out since he is the one that takes the psychic tests. I have one with a Psycannon and Halberd and the rest with just additional Halberds.

I added green stuff scarabs to all of them. Made the halberds from the GW ones combined with Kromlech Khopesh Vibro Swords http://kromlech.eu/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/KhopeshVibroSwords.jpg and added the helmet adornments on the four other Terminators with Scibor SF Accessories set 1 http://sciborminiatures.com/pow.php?absol=1&co=i/conversion_parts/big/sf_accessories_set_01.jpg.

The next step will be paint. I am thinking going with mostly red with gold trim, the traditional scheme for Thousand Sons. Like this:

Here is the squad in all its green stuff glory:

I'll have some more pics up soon.

Today though I am starting to think about lists.

Here is what I have so far for a 1500 point list.

Inquisitor Coteaz

Ordo Xenos Inquisitor with Power Armor, Rad Grenades, 2x Servo Skulls - 54 points

Vindicare Assassin

Grey Knight Terminator Squad (5), Justicar, 3 with Halberds, one Hammer - 225

Inquisitorial Henchmen Warband, 3x Inquisitorial Servitor with Plasma Canon, Jokaero Weaponsmith, Inquisitorial Chimera - 150

Inquisitorial Henchmen Warband, Banisher with Eviscerator, 3x Crusader, 4x Death Cult Assassin, Rhino- 175

Stormraven Gunship, Twin-Linked Assault Cannon, Twin-Linked Multi-melta- 205

Stormraven Gunship, Twin-Linked Assault Cannon, Twin-Linked Multi-melta- 205

Purifier Squad (6), Knight of the Flame, Purifier with Incinerator, 3x Purifier with Halberds, Purifier with Hammer, Razorback, Twin-Linked Assault Cannon, Psybolt Ammunition -240

My plan is to have Inquisitor Coteaz ride in the Chimera with the Jokaero/ Servitor Squads. He will take pot shots at deep strikers that come into the lane made by the Ordo Xenos Inquisitor's Servo Skulls. The Ordo Xenos Inquisitor will ride with the Death Cult squad to supply Rad Grenade support. The Terminators will either Deep Strike in or Rise in a Stormraven. The Purifier Squad will also either ride a raven to get in the enemies face quickly or drive in their Razorback.

What I like about this list is the versitility and mobility it has. I can assign either Inquisitor to any squad for support. I have 5 transports that can be used by almost squad.

The modeling opportunites are great too. I am going to make the Purifiers my Pyrae (the pyrokenitics of the Thousand Sons). They will be in robes with OSL from the bases making them glow like lava. I am thinking that the Crusaders will be Space Marine Scouts Holding Egyptian Shields and the Death Cult Assassins will use the regular Grey Knight bodies with hooded heads and wielding nemesis falchions.

Haven't exactly decided on the rest. Let me know your ideas!

I think they look great. Definitely way better than the GW versions imo. Always liked the GW sorcerers but the regular troopers looked a bit silly to me. My only concern is whether thousand sons had the giant egyptian-like crests pre-heresy? I see them as a lot closer to a normal SM with those knight-like faceplates and the red paint scheme. You're free to paint/model them how you like of course.

In the embrace of the great Nurgle, I am no longer afraid, for with His pestilential favour I have become that which I once most feared: Death.

Here is an update that was a long time coming. There is a reason for this though.

First off I have been working on a secret project and didn't want to reveal it until it was done. I purchased a XBoard display from Battlefoam http://www.battlefoam.com/products/X%252dBoard-Travel-Display.html and have been making it all kinds of Thousand Sons.

There was a lot of work involved in the making of this portable board. First off I bought the Egyptian Obelisks and Entrance from Grendel Miniatures http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=0&products_id=2658. The product was great and can be found on eBay for about $30.00 US. I painted these mostly gold by using a dry brushing of GW Dwarf Bronze, Burnished Gold, a heavy wash of Levithan Purple, Burnished Gold then Shining Gold. All over a black primer (Osh Primer actually http://www.osh.com/ about 2 dollars a can.)

I then painted up the bases with Graveyard earth with a heavy drybrush of Kommando Khaki, then a wash of Gryphonne Sepia. Lastly I picked out the details of the wings above the gate with blend of Enchanted Blue, Hawk Turquoise, wash of Asurmen Blue and a final highlight of Ice Blue. The gem is a few colors of red.

Next I started on the display board. I carefully marked off where the gate and each oblisk would go and masked that with the 3m Blue painter's tape. http://www.scotchblue.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Scotch-BlueBrand/Scotch-Blue/Products/Directory/?PC_7_RJH9U52308H150IUO3HIL13CO6_nid=LJHV1DGTGKgs3CJGDZ9S2QglBJBJN1QXTRbl I added some sand to the flat surface as I wanted a little more detail then the molded plastic gave. then base coated that with the black primer above and drybrushed it with Graveyard earth with a heavy drybrush of Kommando Khaki, then a wash of Gryphonne Sepia as above.

I decided that I wanted the borders to look like a pharaoh's headdress in gold and red.
This was my inspiration:
.
I masked vertical lines in alternate patterns around the entire border. For the gold areas I drybrushed Dwarf Bronze, Burnished Gold, Burnished Gold then Shining Gold. When adding the Shining Gold I bade sure to brush vertically so the lines would be able to be seen. I then painted that with flat clear.

I unmasked the other lines and masked the gold lines. For the red lines I used Mechrite Red, Scarab Red, 50% mix of Scarab Red and Blood Red once again making sure to paint vertically. After a coat of clear on the red I was hoping for perfection. I would love to say that I was done at that point but I made a mistake.

Note to self. With the 3m Masking tape be sure to push down the edges very well. I had a lot of bleed over onto the gold so I had to re-mask that and do the entire gold procedure again. In the end though I think it was worth it. Here are some pictures.

For the second part of my update I just wanted to say that I have my first squad of Thousand Sons Terminators done and I am happy with how they came together. I made some decisions while building, converting and painting these about the army:

I decided to use a red and blue pallet with gold accents. Therefor I made all decisions on color choices from a micture of these colors.

Force weapons in this army would be glowing hot purple.

Armor would be red with gold accents.

Lenses would be blue.

The squad consists of a Terminator Captain (Terminator Justicar) with a force sword, three Terminators with Force Halberds and one Terminator with Force Halberd and Psycannon.

Below are the results:

Group Shot

Captain

Terminator with Psycannon

Terminator 3

Terminator 4

Terminator 5

As always let me know what you think. Next on to the squad of Purifiers.

Thank you all for your comments.

Making progress on the Purifier squad as I have the first five models and their custom bases finished.

Also I have Pre-ordered a Stormraven kit from Chapterhouse Studios. This will make it possible to make two Stormbirds as in the Thousand Sons novel.

I've also finalized plans on how to make Death Cult Assassins like like they belong in a Pre Heresy army and decided how to make a better Vindicare Assassin (the GW model looks dated to me). So keep tuned.

There has been some progress.

Between helping with two graduation parties for kids I managed to squeeze in some more modeling and receive a few more models.

First off I built a model to represent Coteaz in my army. The concept here was that he will be one of the Raptora (here is the page that describes the different cults of the Thousand Sons: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Cults_of_the_Thousand_Sons) and his powers will be represented by the Grey Knight ability of Sanctuary. I armed him with a mace that will take the place of his Daemon Hammer and a Stormbolter from the Space Marine Commander sprue that replaces his Cyber Eagle. A work in progress shot is below:

My next creation is a Vindicare Assassin. For him I used the body of a Space Marine Scout Sniper and the head from the Dark Angles Veterans. I think with him painting and basing will make him stand out in the army.

Lastly I built up a squad of Purifiers. They were made from Dark Angles Veterans Bodies, Scibor Egyptian Parts, Scibor Sci-Fi parts, and Chapterhouse Studios Shoulder pads. For these I also added a buckler on a few of the models and braziers. These models with be from the Pyrae Cult of the Thousand Sons. I am thinking of their paint jobs leaning toward red orange and yellow to represent their pryokenetic abilites. Here are the work in progress shots.

Knight of the Flame

Purifer with Incinerator

Purifer with Deamon Hammer

Purifer with Halberd.

Purifer with Halberd.

I have one more Halberdier to make and I think that I will be replacing the plain halberds with the Kromlech Khopesh Vibro Sword ends like in the Terminators above. I am starting to see Scarabs in my sleep now, lol.

This week I received two Stormravens and a Chimera. These are going to get some new Chapterhouse kits and a whole bunch of Egyptian green stuff work. In also this week is the Instant Mold that I used to make Green Stuff replications of some parts in this projects.

Here is a question for the community. Green Stuff is ok. Is there another product that when dries is a little harder? One that is less sticky? What do you all use?

I bought 1lb of it like 2 years ago & have barely made a dent in it, tho I'm really only starting to use it on a regular basis - even still - it's 1lb! I'll probably never use it all up! I just keep it in my closet in my modeling/game room (my wife FREAKED out when she saw it in the freezer, lol. ) & it's kept just fine. I keep my fingers pretty wet when working w/ it, so I've never noticed it being real sticky & I know it dries harder than GW GS.

And btw - the use of the DA veteran robed legs mixed w/ the GK torso's/head's looks awesome.

Yeah, when the new GK codex came out & the 'Brotherhood of Psykers' rules were released, it's hard not to see the correlation. They have some really cool fluff, the color scheme looks good & it all fits well w/ the GK heads & overall theme.

Nice scarabs, bro. I like the overall look with the robes as well.

And where the hell did that last Purifier w/ Halberd's weapon come from?? That funky axe/bardiche looks great! Is it a new Scibor product? (looked like from the color of the resin)

One... minor... nitpick- The 'counts as' Coteaz- I love the look of the legs with the BA Sang Guard torso... but the pose and the legs look a bit off... the legs have more of a 'bracing' look, whereas the upper body has a different 'moving', dynamic look. Perhaps it's just the picture...? Dunno.

But overall, very, VERY nice. Keep them coming. My PH 1Ks are on hold (as DijnsK and Vryce noted) due to work/classes. Balls...

Those look great! Thousand Sons is my fave legion and you are doing them great justice! A quick idea, if possible you might put greenstuff over the word fortitude on the incinerator the Purifier is holding and then etch heiroglyphs into it. Not sure if its possible but I bet it would look cool. Keep up the great work man.

"The uniforms of the Imperial guard are camouflaged in order to protect their wearers by hiding them from sight. the principle is that what the enemy cannot see, he cannot kill. This is not the way of the Adeptus Astartes. A Space Marine's armour is bright with heraldry that proclaims his devotion to his Chapter and the beloved Emperor of Mankind. Our principle is that what the enemy can see, he will soon learn to fear." -The codex Astartes
