Posted a few months ago some pics of my first ever attempts at painting anything (4 Boyz). Been busy finishing off my last year of Uni but now it's all done so I'm back to painting.

Took a lot of advice from everyone who commented on my last pics (thanks a lot) and here has what I have come up with. Feedbakc much appreciated as I am still learning.

Cheers

He looks pretty good! I really like the painting that you did on his mouth!

I am only saying this because someone will eventually say it anyway, but drill out those barrel holes if you get a hold of a small enough drill bit.

Looking very solid and neat so far. To add depth to the skin, you can add some very soft highlights, (not much brighter than the base colour) and then give a thraka green wash.

Experiment with highlighting and washing on some spares until you get the hang of it. I wouldn't want you to make any mistakes on such a nice model!

You can also try the above technique on his trousers, but with a devlan mud wash .

Very good first attempt looks really nice and neat i like it alot.

Just remember to base your models, my guardsmen are very basically painted but because i have based them well and given them all a nice uniformed look they look good on the tabletop.

+1 to the above, try some washes, they are really helpful, this model looks really great as it is, but with some washes you can make it even better.

Everyone keeps mentioning washes. The funny thing is I have used a Devlan Mud wash on it already. Obviously not enough though, I shall try more. Cheers.

Nice work! You might like to try stippling on the metal to give it a rusty appearance?

All you need is to take a brush that doesn't mind being treated rough, and get some oranges and browns. Get a little paint on your brush, wipe most of it off, and gently 'stab' at the model to leave flecks and small patches.

When it's looking suitably battered, run as little of the metal paint along the edges, where the rust will have been worn away.

You can go the other way with the bronze parts, adding a little dilute turquiose into the recessed parts to suggest verdigris.

Looks good. Just keep painting and you will be surprised how fast your progress as a painter.

Also, you may want to look at drilling out your gun barrels, it only take a few mins. and little details like that make a world of difference.

That is some excellent work! Move to the head of the class and practice w/ highlights.

Also, what you are looking for re: barrels is a pin vice. Google it and look through images. They are inexpensive and are incredibly useful in modeling.

Thanks a bunch. Just ordered one. That is definitely going to help a lot.

Until you get the vice, you can always just put a dot of black paint on the end to simulate the bored out barrel.

Repent. For tomorrow you die. (All is dust...all is dust...all is dust...)

I wouldn't recommend too many thick washes on the same part of the model, too many washes will make it look bad, try doing some washes elsewhere, like Thrakka green on the skin and Baddab black on the metal parts.

*EDIT* I quoted the wrong thing. DERP

With Orks it is hard to overwash the model. IMO you can wash it very heavily and it will come out looking great. The problem is you need to build the color back up on the raised areas, if you leave it all really dark it just looks muddy and has no contrast. With minimal effort you can make some really nice table top Orks with a basecoat, a heavy wash, and basic highlighting.
