I was thikning of basing this around a line from Alien 3, the onle where Dillon is talking to the inmates, and basically the gist is that "we are all going to die, are you going to die doing something, or die kneeling here preaying for mercy", or something like that.

Basically, the theme is a Cadian regiment in a nearly destroyed city, and realise that their situation is deperate. THey are giving upo their lives for one final, fanatical attempt to make a difference, and kill the invading CSM.

I am also trying to do something different to the usual, and here is the list.

Doctrines (that I am considering)
Priests
Close Order Drill
Veterans
Light Infantry
Iron Discipline

HQ

Command Platoon
Command Squad: Junior Officer w/ Honourifica Imperialis, Power Fist & Bolt Pistol. 4 Guardsmen w/ 4 Grenade Launchers.
                    118

Commissar: 1 Commissar w/ Power Fist & Bolt Pistol.
                    61

Priest: 1 Priest w/ Eviscerator.
                    65

Elites

Veteran Squad: Veteran Sergeant w/ Close Combat Weapon & Plasma Pistol. 5 Veterans w/ 3 Plasma Guns.
                    83

Veteran Squad: Veteran Sergeant w/ Close Combat Weapon & Plasma Pistol. 5 Veterans w/ 3 Plasma Guns.
                    83

Troops

Infantry Platoon 1:
Command Squad:    Junior Officer w/ Laspistol & CCW. 4 Guardsmen w/ Heavy Bolter.
                    50

Infantry Squad 1: 10 Men w/ Missile Launcher.
                    75

Infantry Squad 2: 10 Men w/ Missile Launcher.
                    75

Infantry Platoon 2:
Command Squad: Junior Officer w/ Laspistol & CCW. 4 Guardsmen w/ Heavy Bolter.
                    50

Infantry Squad 1: 10 Men w/ Missile Launcher.
                    75

Infantry Squad 2: 10 Men w/ Missile Launcher.
                    75

Heavy Support

Leman Russ Demolisher: Hull Lascannon & Plasma Cannon Sponsons.
                    185

                    995    5 left over.

I am taking the Missile Launchers as I see them as the most portable weapon the army will have, and so need to use them (to set up ambush and the suchlike). I was thinking that Plasma should be relatively rare, and so is restricted to Veteran/Kasrkin squads only.

The Command Section should have an insanely hard punch (if it lives!), and makes a counter-assault unit for my line. I realise that this is probably one of the WORST units i could make, but I want to try it out, I think.

On reflection, this list is probably pretty...crummy (to be polite). Can you suggest modifications / a better list that will fit with the theme (a desperate last stand, the troops giving it all, to the last man, but willingly so, in the hope of making a difference to others)?

Aww crud...I think I need SERIOUS help making a guard army to fit that theme. can you give me any?

Ps, a final thought that is rather fitting to my army is,

"We're going to stare down this evil like men. And there ain't going to be a single one of us not redeemed in the eyes of the Emperor."

Cheers in advance, Treadhead.

Pps, H.B.M.C., I have read your advice to all my other topics, and others beside. I know that 1) GL suck. 2) ML suck, 3) Tanks work in 2/3s. 4) Commands should be simple leadership. 5) Special Weapons.

Yet you still do the opposite and do all of the above. The Command Squad is the worst offender. Over 200 points for 7 T3 I3 models, three of them swinging at I1 - Sorry, that's wrong - three of them not swinging at I1 because the squad will be dead before they can swing.

In a 1000 point game you simply do not spend 20%+ of your points on a CHQ that goes into HTH. All your doing is giving your opponent VPs. I'll look at the rest of the list later.

I have kinda realised how bad the entire army is to be honest.

I am trying to re-do it, but with my theme in mind (cityfighting, die to the last man, etc)

It has been suggested that I get the "Chem Inhalers" doctrine to represent the psycological effect of knowing they are going to die, and so are less likely to run if getting massacred.

I would probably include Heavy bolters as well, as they are faily portable, but would they be worth it against the Marines?

I am also considering taking Flamers as a special weapon for when the enemy gets close (as they are apparently better than GL, and i am trying to limit Plasma to veteran squads) or, should i run with Meltaguns (short range, but will kill a marine if it hits).

with the Command Squad - its a throwback to V3 where you could take a Commander with Fist and commie with Fist and could, in emergencies, take down heavy stuff when it reached your line. Those days are dead and gone, but i don't want the standard "bare bones" command, so I took this. It's going for major re-haul.

Also, I am thinking of including a hellhound in smaller games, as opposed to a Russ. Obviously, the Russ has extra armour than this, and so takes fire better, and has a battle Cannon, but i know Hellhounds hurt everything infantry based!

Oh, I have realised that the army sucks badly!

Ps, I am thinking of considering a pyromaniac army, with plasma/meltagun for support. Would this be any good?

Well, I have scrapped the above army for a little while now (well, only for a while) - I am getting into a Fantasy thing, but this is my next planned 40K project. What do you rekon?

110

Commissars: 1 Commisar w/ Power Weapon & Laspistol. (Joins CHQ)
45

Troops

Infantry Platoon 1:

69

Infantry Squad 1: 10 Men w/ Lascannon & Plasma Gun.
95

95

Infantry Squad 2: 10 Men w/ Lascannon & Plasma Gun.
95

Armoured Fist Squad 1: 10 Men w/ Meltagun. Chimera w/ Turret Multi Laser, Hull Heavy Bolter & Smoke Launchers.
163

Armoured Fist Squad 2: 10 Men w/ Meltagun. Chimera w/ Turret Multi Laser, Hull heavy Bolter & Smoke Launchers.
163

Fast Attack

Hellhound: Pintle Heavy Stubber & Smoke Launchers.
130

Heavy Support

Leman Russ Battle Tank 1: Hull Heavy Bolter.
145

Leman Russ Battle Tank 2: Hull Heavy Bolter.
145

1500

Standard Command tactics - Ld 10 to may army!. Infantry Squads & Anti-Tank deploy, PHQs counter-charge duty. Russes are "moile pillboxes" for flanks. Fists advance onto objective, or bolster lines, or get behind enemy and be a pain. Hellhound is counter charge, or moves with Fists. Russes can support this and Fists if needed.

Well, what do you think?

will the Hellhound live? There is the "Works in 2s or not" rule, but with the other 2 Chimeras, do they count towards this?

Have you thought about the abhuman doctrine  (with albino troops I forget the name).  Your regular troopers have ATSKNF, which also would simulate a desperate force without hope (even overcoming their fear).

-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

I love the theme. It'd be cool to see it come together as a list. And the abhuman doctrine does seem appropriate (though it'd be more like "And They Shall Know No Hope").
Maybe slave levies would fit, too (simulating the effect of lugging scavanged heavy weapons through the city ruins).

Well, unfortunately I can't find the Abhuman Doctrines - I know they were in WD, but that is it.

I WANt to run with the original theme, but i don't see how it can be effective as an army. I am heavily limiting myself on the weapons and armour (tanks) I can take, but would be fun to play.

Plus it is a great Doc, but very very fluffy in your case, "always hit on a 3+" heck they are tired besiged defenders, ANSKNF. It is kinda cool to see your squads fall back and then still get to shoot.
