Hey Dakka, I am wanting to break into the valleho paint range and was looking for some advice. Where, in your opinions, is the best place to buy from and what sets would be good to get? After reading through alot of the fellow painters posts, many seem to prefer the consitency of and the bottles that the vallejo paints come in. Thanks in advance for any help that you can offer.

Three Color Minimum

While it might have been overkill, I bought the Game Color suitcase and have been pleased with it. I added a few Game, Model and Model Air color bottles too and a few others here and there. If you are looking for sets such as the suitcase, I would go check ebay. If you want to go the individual bottle route, I would check out thewarstore.com. If you have any local independent game stores, see if they have it or can get it from their distributor.
For Metalics, the hear very good things about the model air bottles and if you can find them, Vellejo makes a line of alcohol based metallics that are supposedly exceptional. I have not tried them, but they are on my list.

I've been using Vallejo Paints (Game Color and Air) for about a year now. I like the droppers, I have moved to using the air paints for my metallics (they're already thinned down), and I like them over all. You still need to thin them but I use/waist less paint, more paint per bottle and same or better quality.

I just had the same problem myself, I couldn't find where to buy Vallejo paints. It turned out that I live less than 2 miles (from what I hear) is one of the largest hobby shops in America.
While I don't have any advice about where to buy, you might want to consider just buying primary yellow/red/blue/black/white and just a couple other frequented base colors (and mix colors vs. buying a specific set). I used to buy large sets of paint when I first started and spent an exorbitant amount of money. Since I've been using a wet-palette and mixing my own, I've found I have a lot more control over the color, a better eye for shading/highlighting and saved a good chunk o' change.
I tried out the regular Vallejo modeling paints and the Game Color, I didn't really notice any difference. I've read forums where people have asked if there is a difference in the density of pigment (or something equally specific), but nobody was quite sure. Just something else to consider!

Battlefront uses Vallejo for their Flames of War paint sets, and I've picked up a few of those. No complaints so far, and the droppers work quite nicely imo.

Love my Vallejo paints. I first got some in 2002ish when Flames of War came out. And a couple of years ago I got the suitcase for a present (72 colors to screw minis up with). Last year when I returned from the desert every GW paint pot I had was a brick. Even the Vallejo paints I first purchased for FOW were still good even after sitting untouched for almost a year.
