Chapterhouse has some pretty huge storm shields which could surfice as an IG riot shield or take a strip of styrene mount a metal tube in a vice or clamp it to a tabletop you don't mind damaging, tape the strip of styrene to the bar then heat, if you have a hot air gun then you can heat the styrene directly on the low setting, if you just have candles and such you might be better off heating the pipe... if you let it cool the styrene should then be bent into shape and it will roughly stay that shape so you can add more and more details.

The easier option than playing with heat guns would be to find some plastic tubing of a suitable diameter and cut to size

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Legos have a clear window pane that should be about the right size. Put a piping around the edge, greenstuff a handle on and you have a suitably unique commander.

Opaque riot shield or clear one?

For the opaque ones, spare IG track guards work. So does plasticard.

For the clear ones, cut a rectangle from the clear blister pack plastic and secure with a small dot of superglue (you MAY need to make an arm brace for it wit GS to get a good fit though).

Enforcers look good,
I also have models for a game called 'Urban War' (It never really took off) but there sre models that use shield which could easiily look like riot shields

Currently debating whether to study for my exams or paint some Deathwing

That's the Urban War stuff mentioned earlier. Check out the Urban War and Metropolis Blister Packs section. There are at least 3-4 good shield options throughout the various factions.

avoid that eagle looking shield, it won't look right. If you are trying to make a conversion on a model that small, your best bet is to not make it too fancy or people will miss it. Basic riot shields are your best choice, so the dwarf thing.

They're quite hard to find nowadays, but the front panels off the original rhino kit look pretty snazzy.

The trick will be finding some though.

Thanks for the replys. looks like the best shot are the dwarf wardens.
But this brings up some questions. are the shields metal or plastic, and do the have the dwarfs hand attached?

+1 to the blinds. If you live in an apartment complex, chances are you can get a set that are being replaced. Hardware stores also tend to do custom cut sizes for them, and you can usually get the scraps for little to nothing.

Dwarf vault wardens are metal models. The blister pack includes 3 parts: the spearman, the dwarf holding the shield and the shield. The dwarf's hand is not attached to the shield. The hand is slightly flattened to give a good gluing surface and there are a couple of sections on the shield that protrude about 1/2mm on the back so that the hand fits in the middle.
Hope this helps.

I just used sheet polystyrene, however, this style of shield might not look so good on single models - at any rate, it's easy enough to do and not too time consuming.

If you wanted the clear look, Evergreen Plastics actually makes a clear styrene sheet. Could work.
