Somewhere in the steamy jungles of the south...

Sooo, I have been looking for a new Sci-Fi kick, something not made by GW. I have decided it is time to try something new! However, I cannot decide on a game to try out.

Here are the two I am seriously considering, plus my thoughts on them. Feel free to rebuke my misconceptions!

Dust Tactics
Pros: Cheap! You cannot beat $15 for a unit of foot soldiers, or $25 for a giant mech. Plus, it has Nazi zombies and power gorillas! Plus, the gameplay is apparently fast and frenetic, which is a HUGE plus for me. Oh, and Paolo Parenete created it and did the artwork, and he happens to be the worlds 2nd most awesome geeky French man (1st place going to Yggdrasil!)! Oh, and the rules are free.
Cons: It seems to be gaining little or no traction, so it could die by the time I have amassed a large collection. Plus, I have heard the plastic on the miniatures is soft and prone to warping. There are also no official rules for plain 'ol miniatures combat out yet, which is a downside, as I would like to play this game on my huge CoD table.

Infinity
Pros: It has a great Manta aesthetic to it, plus I don't have to have to paint 40 or miniature before I can play. Also, the gameplay appears fast, intuitive and fairly realistic. It is designed to be played on tables jam packed with terrain, which I love, and the theme is not totally grimdark. It also has Warrior Nuns and Ninjas, with big guns, so what is not to like? Oh, and the models are metal, which is half good, but also half bad. Which brings me to...
Cons: Well, the models are all metal, which means that they have a fairly hefty price tag attached to them. Also, there don't seem to be many players of this game out there, so I will have to convince somebody to pick the game up, or buy two armies, and play against myself.

Help me decide, please!

Of those 2 you've suggested I would go with infinty. Dust tactics appears to still have quite a small base of players, whereas infinity is very popular.

If you are interested in a weird WW2 games I reccomend Secrets of the third Reich. It has a similar feel background wise, and is one of the more popular WWW2 games.

I´ll say Infinity because every fething month they release more and more AWESOMENESS.
Every single month since 2007 I guess, maybe even earlier. The range is getting better and better and better.
Every time they update the website it is like a fething party for all gamers involved with Infinity.

And that allows me to buy a blister a month and make my army chosing only the creme de la creme within the huge Infinity range.
I´m having fun just with that.

...

...ahm ... I´m such a geek.

I'm biased, but I push for Heavy gear Blitz! to try something a little different.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

Infinity....everytime.

The player base is growing steadily, and the more people playing and demo-ing the game, the more players will emerge.

The miniatures are the BEST sci fi miniatures out there. In my opinion, people tak about Manga in relation to Infinity, but I think the guys at Corvus Belli have actually transcended that likeness, and have managed to create something very individual.....I'd say the "manga" badge is just a easy way to describe the scene....IMHO

Another alternative is MERCS http://www.mercsminis.com five man squads, set in the near future....what's no to like.

Man down, Man down....

If you're willling to learn a generic sci-fi system like WarEngine or No Limits, I'd go with Dust Tactics because at some point you'll probably want to do something besides the Dust Tactics board game with the figures.

If not, I'd go with Infinity.

Are you looking more for a game or for miniatures to paint? If it's for a game, I'd again lean more toward Infinity, but if it's miniatures, I'd troll the net and buy a squad of the figs that speak to you most, just to have something interesting to paint.

You are comparing apples vs oranges. The two games have different themes and target different audience. Play both. Don't choose.

Heres what i would recommend:

Use Shockforce/Warengine for your current 40k armies if you want to get away from GW rules. It plays faster (or allows larger armies) and has creation rules, so you can make your army what you want it to be.

For something totally new, give Infinity a shot. I cant comment on the rules, Ive never seen them, but the minis are great.

Dust tactics looks good too, but really isnt scifi.

Whats my game?
Warmachine (Cygnar)
10/15mm mecha
Song of Blades & Heroes
Blackwater Gulch
X wing
Open to other games too

Heavy Gear is good for anime robot combat. They came out with a robot gladiatorial version of the game called arena which kind of melds gorkamorka/necromunda/mordheim "gang" building with little gundams. You basically put together a team of Gear Duelists (including the noncombat building aspects like sponsors, mechanics, etc) and then challenge another team to a gladiator-meets-gundam-meets-rollerball fight. It might be the way to go as opposed to the ful Heavy Gear game if you don't have a local group as you only need 2-6 minis for a full team depending on how you upgrade them. That lower entry price point can help convince others to start up.

Y'know...I was gonna start Infinity, but after about 2 weeks of research, I am going with Dust, For one, with the new starter box, it will be really affordable for me to start up. In order to start Inifinity, I would need to buy two starter packs, which would total around $80. In addition, I would need to convince my gaming buddies to start up, but they are not into Anime/Manga stuff. And the learning Curve for Infinity is one of the steepest around, and me and my buddies don't have the time to learn really complicated rulesets.

Soo, Dust Tactics it is. My group loves giant mechs, zombies, and other generally pulpy, Ameritrash type games. And it is a very fast paced, bloody game, which I love. Plus, I have been looking for a wargaming fix that doesn't require a tape measure/hours of my day.

Not a bad choice at all I've not played the game, but it's a great set of minaitures. Also, if you get tired of the Dust tactics rules, you could always use the figs with Warengine/Shockforce.

Infinity, their sculpts puts GW's to shame.

For once i felt the price of a miniature is justified....

Or I could use them for my own homebrew rules I have been working on for over 2 years...Plus, they look to be a JOY to paint.

Infinity is a hit/miss thing. Some people like the models and some got turned off by them. The people in my FLGS tried it for a while and then dropped it completely. The figures went on sale and subsequently the store does not even carry it anymore. The other store in my city still carries the game with an interest group playing but it is not comparison to the amount of activities going on with Warmachine and other games there. Infinity has been around for a few years. It is unlikely to pick up more momentum.

On the other hand, if you look at Dust Tactics, the amount of new products put out by FFG is unbelieveable. I considered it to be "insane" wondering how anyone can pay for all these in such a short time. The walkers are beautifully sculptured and the potential for expansion is huge, something that Infinity will never have.

In the end, it will be safer to spend your money on Dust Tactics.
