As promised, here is my latest tile mosaic terrain piece. This one is a little bigger than the first, and I think a little sharper. I've included a marine for scale. I've thought about doing a tutorial on this. Would anyone be interested? If I'm the only one who likes doing this sort of thing, that's fine, I won't be offended.

I think a tutorial would be quite nice.

Interesting idea Jimsolo.

The pieces are very large compared to the tesserae that a mosaic would be made of.

It is more like crazy paving. Is it for part of a diorama or a piece of gaming terrain. I like the idea a lot for those.
I can definitely see it as part of an Imperium landscape; a wide square with statury surrounded by Imperial buildings.

Not to mention it would make a nice display board for GTs.

Very nice work, man!
Its even better, technique wise, than your chaos emblem. curves like that in broken tile chips must take forever.

In scale, average tesserae would be the size of pinheads, so I wouldn't ever shoot for "total realism," but if you had the patience to scale them down a bit more, something like this could make an awesome display base/tray. The addition of small monuments (statues, columns, fountains, etc.) would add an extra touch of flavor.

oadie- I think that the addition of more scenery will definitely enhance it. The problem with getting the pieces too small is the medium I used for these. Since the 'chunks' on mine are made from vinyl floor tiles, you can only cut them so small before they A) start to deform and B) look weird. But I've been toodling around with some other materials, and hopefully those will let me work a little smaller.

Doomthumbs- I've never thought of working with stained glass. Now I have to go find out more about it...any experience with it yourself?

Jim
What I think would look good is a regular paving slabtype of pattern, which would be doable with the vinyl floor tiles.

If you inset an emblem in that grid maybe filled with another material/ pattern or whatever it would work really well
hope that makes sense

Also to make life easier you could imitate the emblem set in concrete and just have the expansion joints
Also there maybe some small brightly coloured bits of plastic that could be used in the emblem.

There are so many possibilities tbh and I think you have really hit on something!

Stained glass means you need a grinder and soldering gun instead of just a hammer, but even a medium grade one would mean you could cut more precise angles in the tile.
This is a cool idea and you seem to be doing really great stuff with basic tools and methods. I'd love to see you progress this to the next level, even though its pretty damn awesome right now.

Doing something like this with a 40k motif WOULD be pretty cool. You could sell them like hotcakes at a con.

Stained glass supplies cost about $200 for the tools, but I recouped my investment the first con I went to.

Tex, that's incredible! I'm definitely going to look into stained glass. Hopefully I can find the tools a bit cheaper (I have some connections) but the end result is gorgeous. Thanks for the support guys!

I might nick the idea but not for 40K
Am doing some terrain that requires a decorative aspect.

It will be used for Anima Tactics and other skirmish games, and was thinking of getting some decals made for some of the hard landscape.

But thinking about it a bit of mosaic work here and there might not go amiss.

I don't think it would be too difficult to make these out of just plasticard though. Painted up and from a decent distance i don't think many people would notice the difference, and then theres always those 'rock effects' spray paints.

You just gave me an idea to do an entire board like this. A kind of church floor.

Very nice. Feels like something you'd have to walk across to get to the temple of correction, or at least to the steps to the temple of correction.

I see that you've made a few; thought about making some more and making them in to some kind of modular playing board? You could probably sell it if you put it together well enough (look at your UM one, I can't see that being a problem).

I thought about it, but these things are massively time intensive, and I could never get enough money for one to make it worth it. I'm working on another one, and I'm planning on making a temple with them.
